12.7 oz bottle poured into Spiegelau glass

A: had a light soapy looking head that was gone in a flash very brown brackish very dark but slight light through the edges

S: big bourbon, lots of toffee, and sweet caramel

T: lots of the sweet bourbon vanilla, toffee, and slight bits of roasted coffee

M: medium to full a little thin very clean feel to it

O: This beer is super easy to drink. Its so smooth great barrel characteristics I have had the original and it is amazing and this beer is no slouch. I can't get over how much flavor there is compared to how clean it finishes. (584 characters)

poured into HF wine stem.

Appearance: black bodied beer with almost 2 full fingers of off white colored head. Head drops down to a thin cap quickly and eventually drops down to a ring around the glass.

Smell: Honey and bourbon. Hint of dark fruits, hint of roast malts, and hint of sweet toffee. Dried oak aroma's are plentiful as well.

Taste: This beer opens up with flavors of premium bourbon and the bourbon is slightly richer than the malt profile found in this beer, but the barrel aging still compliments the malt profile without completely overtaking it. Brown sugar, honey, butterscotch, coconut, and toffee with a little indistinguishable bitter twang. Hint of dark fruits and caramel are the main components of the malt profile. Light tannic oak in the finish with a light sweetness that makes this beer have an awesome finish that lingers for a good amount of time. Sweet, malty, and complex flavor profile.

Mouthfeel: medium bodied beer with low, but almost moderate carbonation. This beer drinks well below its listed ABV. Very smooth.

Overall: This beer reminds me alot of a Mother of All Storms, but Bourbon Brick Kiln has creamier carbonation and it is much much smoother at a younger age. This really is an outstanding barrel aged english barleywine. Lots of complexity and well done barrel aging. Jackie O's made a very impressive barrel aged English Barleywine. (1,477 characters)

Thanks to umich03jm for this one! It'll be the first thing I've had from Jackie O's although I have a few of their bottles waiting in my cellar. Bottle #61 of 342, Batch 12. This beer is murky, nebulous, and looks like the second runnings of swamp water; brown and mahogany with barely any head that forms; it looks thick and big, on par for a big-ass barley wine.

Sweet plums and dates smothered in more sweet syrup, backed up with a robust silhouette of oak and spicy bourbon. The back end of the aroma contains a nice heap of black licorice; I like black licorice like I like rug burn, but it's buried enough here between the heavy bourbon, oak, and dark fruits, so my panties aren't in too big of a bunch.

Warm toffee and a light coconut and vanilla barrel-induction finish things off. Not as much caramel or brown sugar or just all around malt-assault as I'd expect for an 11%+ ABV barley wine, but I guess hanging out in bourbon barrels for a while can blunt some of those things. Definitely smells like a big mother effer; we'll see how it translates to the taste.

The first sip is honestly much better than I expected it to be; I'm not sure exactly what that means, because I didn't think it smelled *bad*, but I guess I just wasn't expecting it to taste this good. Sticky toffee and malty brown sugar (there we go) lathered all over a mound of bourbon soaked wood, plums, dates, and sharp cherry skins.

Vanilla, coconut, and anise are taken down a notch in the flavor, but I can forgive that as I'm pretty satisfied with the increase in brown sugar and toffee. Lots of boozy warmth all around, almost maybe a bit beyond just "warmth"; just like eating a handful of Hot Tamales, it burns, but it hurts so good. Dry oak finish; the body is thick and sticky, microwaved Aunt Jamima consistency with a slick and chunky mouth feel.

First offering from Jackie O's and I really quite enjoyed it. Barley wines are a delicate style for me, and can be pretty hit or miss. This was definitely more on the "hit" side. I actually enjoyed it more than the AleSmith BA Old Numbskull - the big ol' "popular" and highly acclaimed BA barley wine that I was expecting to like more. Like settling for the slightly less appealing assistant captain cheerleader then finding out her parents are millionaires. (2,299 characters)

Appearance: pours very dark, one of the darkest barleywines I have had, not much head
Aroma: Blast of Caramel notes and bourbon, sweet toffee, malt, and vanilla not much more than that, smells like your average BABW but on steroids.
Taste: Tons of toffee and bourbon (lots of bourbon), The bourbon stays lingers but the flavor changes form toffee to caramel to vanilla than back to caramel. as it warms up The flavors seem to meld together but not so much as you cant distinguish the flavors.
Overall: very complex and changes well as it warms. quite a remarkable beer. I will certainly be picking up a couple more of these to age (if i can find them again). (661 characters)

This big barleywine is a thick, ruddy dark brown. The head on top is tan and creamy, standing at just under one finger and leaving a ring where it settles followed by some creamy spotting beneath.
This has plenty of character, and it's a big malty beast. The aroma and flavor are full of woods, toasted dark sugar, blackstrap, and a more of a brown sugar underlying. Some heat shows strongly without hitting too hard.
This beer has a sturdy feel in its full body with good movement, some alcohol coming in but remaining smooth and crisp with just enough carbonation to make it flow without being overdone (609 characters)

650 mL bottle poured into a snifter. 2012 bottle with no bottle number.

Appearance - Deep reddish brown. Not much of a head. Pencil thin collar. Just a few bubbles on the surface.

Smell - Rich vanilla. Lots of vanilla. Loaded with caramel and nice Bourbon notes. Nice aroma.

Taste - Lots of caramel. Just as much vanilla. Deep caramel and Bourbon. Just a touch of hops, very faint. A lot of oak. Astringent.

Mouthfeel - Pretty boozy. Astringent and a little harsh. Par for the course.

Overall - It's Jackie O's and it's not sour! Yay! Very nice barleywine. Excellent barrel character. (589 characters)
