Bottle into a Duvel glass. Pours a medium-dark brown with a bit of sediment. Completely opaque & nearly pitch black in the glass. An aggressive pour yielded 1 finger of mocha-colored, bubbly foam. Receded down to a dense, frothy lacing after a couple minutes. Cloyingly sweet caramel and bourbon on the nose with much of the oakiness shining through. Slightly choclatey with hints of roased malt and toffee. Disappointly light in weight, although it is quite smooth. It lacks that dense, syrupy body that I fell in love with when I had BCBBW. This is, however, well-balanced. Great bourbon flavoring on the taste without being boozy. Quite sweet, as expected, with strong notes of oak, roasted malt, caramel, and toffee. A bit choclately on the back end, which I found to be very pleasant.

I drank this one at nearly room temperature and it still wasn't overly boozy, which is awesome. The bourbon barrel aging does wonders for this one. Good stuff.

Brick Kiln is one of the few Barleywines I like. Bourbon aging this beer take it up another slight notch. However, this beer is ridiculously expensive for what it is. Just pure greed. good luck Jack!

Like the majority of the Jackie O's I've tried to this point, this was not as good as I was expecting. In this case, the beer was nothing but a disappointment.

Thin, with little barrel or sweet barleywine flavor. A bit sharp tasting. I'd say it almost tasted like it was infected, except I don't think it was.

Overall, I think it's time for me to give up on Jackie Os.

Muddled brown color. Some good bourbon on the nose, but also some alcohol heat on the nose. Taste is more barelywine than barrel, but a decent although slightly harsh mix. Finish is rough at first but heartwarming to linger. Solid good beer.

Pours a deep mahogany, with a delicate tightly packed khaki foam, that rises a finger high and then settles to an even layer. Smell is definitely holding forth some bourbon barrel, slightly charred sugar, and a very smooth vanilla. Flavor brings more of the same with a very creamy mouthfeel. Finishes slightly warm, with a fine balance between the bourbon, vanilla, and malts. Overall, a fine English barleywine with a gentle, creamy feel that makes it quite unique.

Pours a deep chocolate, didn't expect that. Aroma is bourbon, vanilla and sweet maltiness. Flavor is so smooth. You get the bourbon, vanilla, honey? and a malt backbone. Drinks incredibly smooth. You would think this would be way heavier based on smell. Great beer

i would have told you that the regular brick kiln needed no barrel, that it was mellowed and rich enough without it, and i would have been correct, but i also would have been missing the potential of it, so i am lucky drlovemd87 shared this bottle with me. still has that same almost charred amber color to it, much darker than others, with a little less head than i remember but not at all still. the bourbon barrel is evident right away in the smell and the taste, its sweet and loaded with vanilla. i sort of liked the grain focused nature of the base beer, but this vanilla layer is really nice with the moist oak character and all of the grain density. its not stupidly complex, and i like that sometimes. how often do these turn into kitchen sink experiments for the sake of being big and weird? not here, this is calculated and precise, engineered carefully and skillfully. i think the base brick kiln is one of my favorite american made barleywines, and this is a great extension of it. sweet enough in the finish with molasses notes and maple notes, but not over the top. these guys are fast becoming one of my favorite breweries in the country.

A: had a light soapy looking head that was gone in a flash very brown brackish very dark but slight light through the edges

S: big bourbon, lots of toffee, and sweet caramel

T: lots of the sweet bourbon vanilla, toffee, and slight bits of roasted coffee

M: medium to full a little thin very clean feel to it

O: This beer is super easy to drink. Its so smooth great barrel characteristics I have had the original and it is amazing and this beer is no slouch. I can't get over how much flavor there is compared to how clean it finishes.

This is an absolutely fantastic BA BW that is sweet but balanced, has a gorgeous DARK brown color but has this weird aroma that I was immediately turned off by. Luckily the flavor and the aroma were different and also need to note the ABV was hidden so nicely. Looking forward to the next one!

poured into HF wine stem.

Appearance: black bodied beer with almost 2 full fingers of off white colored head. Head drops down to a thin cap quickly and eventually drops down to a ring around the glass.

Smell: Honey and bourbon. Hint of dark fruits, hint of roast malts, and hint of sweet toffee. Dried oak aroma's are plentiful as well.

Taste: This beer opens up with flavors of premium bourbon and the bourbon is slightly richer than the malt profile found in this beer, but the barrel aging still compliments the malt profile without completely overtaking it. Brown sugar, honey, butterscotch, coconut, and toffee with a little indistinguishable bitter twang. Hint of dark fruits and caramel are the main components of the malt profile. Light tannic oak in the finish with a light sweetness that makes this beer have an awesome finish that lingers for a good amount of time. Sweet, malty, and complex flavor profile.

Mouthfeel: medium bodied beer with low, but almost moderate carbonation. This beer drinks well below its listed ABV. Very smooth.

Overall: This beer reminds me alot of a Mother of All Storms, but Bourbon Brick Kiln has creamier carbonation and it is much much smoother at a younger age. This really is an outstanding barrel aged english barleywine. Lots of complexity and well done barrel aging. Jackie O's made a very impressive barrel aged English Barleywine.

11.99 for 12.7 oz. Yeah we're in the absurd category.

Pours a bit of a white head, darker brown color, higher abv is assumed and a dense body leads one to believe this will be a big beer.

As English barley wines go we're on the hoppy side on the nose, a lot of citrus hops make their way through the deep candy caramel malts. The end as a lot of vanilla and oak from the bourbon. A nice aroma, not really to style per say but who cares?

Toffee, caramel, oak, vanilla, raisins, molasses, candy corn, perhaps even some creme brulee all come out in the taste.

Where this beer really does well is in the mouth feel. Very smooth, creamy, despite not being overly carbonated it as a very enjoyable body.

Overall this is a stupid STUPID over priced beer, it is very good but not great. At about 68 dollars per six pack equivalent this is absurd. Remember bourbon count stout can be found under 40 for a six pack even at single bottle prices. Overall score without price is a 4. With price we have to drop this to a 2. I'm sorry but price matters.

Aged this one for about a year and the taste was phenomenal! Bourbon really pulls through and it was super smooth! Jackie O's keep doing what you're doing!!

2014 batch.

A: Pours a nice dark brown. Medium-sized brown head that fades out quickly. Zero lacing, almost no retention at all. Looks practically still.

S: Big sweet notes. Heavy, heavy caramel and vanilla. Heavy bread. Some dark fruits. Lots of oak. Nice complex malty nose in general. Hints of bourbon booziness.

T: Syrupy sweet. Heavy caramel notes up front followed by heavy bready notes in the middle with lots of oak overtones. Kinda get some toasted coconut in the finish with oak and lingering caramel sweetness. A decent bourbon sting that lingers in the aftertaste.

M: Heavy bodied, low carbonation. Syrupy and almost oily it's so thick and heavy. Only saving grace is that the bourbon booziness really helps cut it at some points.

O: Nice variant of the original. The bourbon really adds some nice layers of complexity that compliment the base beer well. Balance is better as a result. Heavy, malty and sweet. Pretty much what you'd expect from a good bourbon barrel english barleywine.

375 ml bottle into snifter, 2014 vintage bottling. Pours hazy opaque dark brown color with a 1 finger dense tan head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty lacing clings around the glass, with some light streaming carbonation. Aromas of big raisin, plum, caramel, toffee, toast, brown sugar, brown bread, coconut, butterscotch, vanilla, bourbon, oak, light chocolate, and oak/toasted earthiness. Incredible aromas with fantastic complexity and balance of dark/bready malt and bourbon barrel notes; with great strength. Taste of big raisin, plum, caramel, toffee, toast, brown sugar, brown bread, coconut, butterscotch, bourbon, oak, light chocolate, and oak/toasted earthiness. Light oak bitterness and bourbon spiciness on the finish; with lingering notes of raisin, plum, caramel, toast, toffee, brown sugar, brown bread, coconut, butterscotch, bourbon, oak, light chocolate, and oak/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Absolutely insane complexity and perfect balance of dark/bready malt and bourbon barrel flavors; with an awesome malt/barrel spice balance zero cloying sweetness after the finish. Light carbonation and fairly full bodied; with a very smooth, creamy, and fairly slick mouthfeel that is incredible. Alcohol is well hidden with a light-moderate warmth lingering after the finish; but not boozy at all. Overall this is a world class BA English Barelywine style. Pretty much perfect balance and complexity of dark/bready malt and bourbon barrel flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the big ABV. An absolutely mind blowing offering all around.

a - brew pours a deep burgandy brown with a very thin off grey head that was gone instantly. some spotty lace was present upon a swirl or sip, but that quickly slid down to the beer.

s - nose is really nice english barleywine with big caramel notes soaked in booze from the barrels. nutty, grape, pretty much everything i look for in a good BA barley.

t/m/o - what a pleasant treat. the flavrs really pop with big chewy caramel doused in booe, but not overly boozed up...adds a heavy element of chocolate decadence. definitely heavy on the barrel, but it works. this is top notch, reminds me of kuhnhenn's BA brews. very worthwhile.

Thanks to fiver29 – yes, I’m getting carpal tunnel syndrome from typing that phrase – once again for more Jackie O’s, & for changing an old, negative image of the brewery. This is one of their weird, stubby little 375ML bottles with a brick kiln on the label. How linear.

The pour is the same jumbled dark brown as the non-barrel aged version, which makes sense, since I guess barrels don’t add much in the way of Technicolor. I have to take off my glasses because I can’t smell anything with them on, & still can’t with them off. Same vagueish caramel, with perhaps a bit of coconut thrown in. Maybe. Or maybe it’s just a different version of water.

Brick Kiln – Bourbon Barrel Aged has gained a step from the base, which was dull to the extreme. The barrel aging is so in my grill I think it’s actually touching my sclera. Heavy bourbon & six tablespoons of vanilla drown the base beer in its cradle which, in this case, I don’t believe is a crime in 49 states (OH might object). Mid-palate there is some actual beer stuff: raisins, that herbal oddness, large bore needle of sweetness. Esophageal sting of bourbon lowers the curtain. For some reason the alcohol seems more distant, but nicely thick for a barleywine.

This is the rare beer that improves significantly with the barrel, usually boring in, boring out. The barrel here seems to have added some much-needed woohoo. Woo-fucking-hoo. Still not great, but exceeding expectations, this is a good brew. Goodwoohoogood!

Served to me on-tap at Lizardville in Bedford in a tulip glass, this beer draws a very dark amber brown color that is not at all interested in letting in any light. Has a very tan head that's is about a solid inch thick when first served to me. Eventually and after a few sips it settles to a nice thick ring lining the inside of the glass along with pretty decent lacing. This is certainly the darkest barley wine I have ever had/seen, and looks much more like a stout, Porter, black IPA, or dark Belgian ale to me. The color seems out of place for the style of beer. Aromas of bready caramel malt, bourbon barrel goodness, and alcohol. Flavors of bready caramel malt sweetness upfront followed by bits of butterscotch, bourbon notes, and booze. The alcohol is not well masked here, not that that's a problem. Very slight hop presence rounds out the flavor profile here, it is just barely discernible. Has a crisp, smooth, frothy, slightly syrupy and chewy medium to full bodied mouthfeel with light to moderate carbonation. This one really needs to sit and warm up for awhile for the flavor profile to come out fully, although I do think mine was served to me too cold to start with. At first it did not taste like a barley wine to me, and was much more akin to a Porter or stout. Has a very clean finish. An excellent beer overall.

Appearance: Like the non-barrel aged base beer, this one pours out with a creamy topped by rocky tan head over the walnut brown colored liquid; clumps of lace develop in the tulip

Smell: Caramel, vanilla and raisins, toasted coconut and oak; the Bourbon influence is surprisingly subtle

Taste: Caramel and vanilla tones, initially, with the raisin and toasted coconut developing; after the swallow, the oak and the Bourbon become more apparent and there is considerable warmth in the finish

Mouthfeel: Medium to full body with moderate carbonation; warmth in the gullet

Overall: While this is more complex than the base beer, I cannot help but think that it is also a bit below the top echelon for the style; still, quite a good beer, but not a great one

It looks like it is really dark brown in color. I'm holding it to the light and nothing is getting through. It is topped with an inch of tan head that disappears fairly quickly. Very little lacing.

The bourbon really comes through. I get aromas of caramel and oak.

The taste focuses a little more on the oak. The caramel comes through but not like in the smell. It has a dry, earthy finish.

It has a full, oily smooth mouthfeel. Low carbonation.

The bourbon greatly increases the aroma and flavor of this beer. I just had the Brick Kiln, and this is an amazing transformation. The barrel aging takes a good beer to greatness.

Pours to a deep dark blackish brown body. Nose is a fluffy inch and a half of milk chocolate brown head. Very elegant and sexy in the glass. Nose is a gorgeous rich smell full of sweet bourbon notes and tones of carmel and toffee dancing together in a perfect aroma symphony. The nose of so luscious, I hope the taste stands up to it. Enters into the mouth with smooth and silky feel. Carmel and bourbon are meet with a lingering hop character that shows this was a hoppy Barley-wine to start. Lovely and rich in flavor with tons of sweetness and toffee that really define this beer. There is a nice dryness to the finish of this brew that does well to add a proper element of balance to the beer.

Finally getting around to trying this one, and man was I in for a treat! Waited til it warmed a little to get the true bourbon barrel character, and barrel-aged it was. Lots of dessert-like sweetness in the malt, with burnt sugar, toasted coconut, caramel, and the definite bourbon and oak that was dominant throughout. Tons of bourbon barrel in this one. An amazing beer, just wish the price tag hadn't been so steep. So glad I tried it though! Another great beer by Jackie O's.

Poured from a bottle into a Lost Abbey Teku. Very dark, but clear mahogany with ruby tints. Extremely impressive head for a barrel-aged beer. A solid 3 fingers that slowly dissipates down to a thin layer of foam. Monstrously good nose on this beer. Tons of rich toasted malt malt, vanilla, bourbon, toasted oak, and butterscotch.

Full body, solid feel, and smooth sweet flavor. Loads of sweet caramel, black strap molasses, creamy vanilla, and rich bourbon notes come at you. Strangely, the only place I don't get a huge wallop of flavor is right at the front of the palate. It's almost as if the individual flavors can't decide which one wants to come first. Then, just when you think the flavor is going to be rather bland, they all charge at you like liquid marshmallows and bourbon without any bite at all. The alcohol is very well-hidden, despite all the bourbon notes, except for a nice warmth on the finish. How a brewer can make such a bourbon-infused beer that drinks so smooth is beyond me.

This is one of those rare beers that would be perfectly content to be poured over a dish of vanilla ice cream. It is easily in the top 3 of all the bourbon-barrel-aged English barleywines I've had, ranking only slightly behind BCBBW and Sucaba and only because it lacks some of the complexities of flavor of those beers. A beautiful beer from Jackie O's that I thoroughly enjoyed.

375 ml bottle, poured into a snifter at approximately 55 degrees F.

A: This is single darkest barleywine I have ever poured - it resembles a stout, dark as can be. The iPhone flashlight test reveals almost no light getting through it save for a tiny spot of ruby highlight. It forms a pale tan head which dies swiftly to a ring.

S: That's bourbony on the nose, all booze and hardwood with an odd, harsh sort of anise-vanilla extract mixture. Plenty of oak and alcohol wreath through this aroma.

T: Interesting. This is a sweet, sweet beer, not unlike heavy molasses with alcohol in it. Sharp notes of toffee are rounded off with caramel, and there's no shortage of oak and maple character to the flavor. The finish tastes of molasses and brown sugar almost enough to convince one that there are grains of sugar in the beer as it goes down. Some tinges of the vanilla extract from the scent are present, though none of the anise. The bourbon emerges more and more as it warms, taking over the taste profile.

M: Watery, yet sticky, and definitely towards the flat side (as one would expect from a barrel-aged beer).

O: This is one of the single most bourbony barrel-aged beers I've tried, with an aftertaste of alcohol that has some of the sting and burn of sipping directly on a couple fingers of whiskey neat. While barleywines by and large are boozy things, this takes the booziest award by far. It would probably do well with a year or two in the cellar.

Really enjoyed this BBBW. Right up there with the BC and Kuhnhenns flavor level. Not "right there" but close. Kinda expensive but worth it I think.

12.7 ounce bottle, 2014 vintage. Served in a snifter, the beer pours a dark brown color with about a half inch off-white head. Head retention is decent, and there's a good amount of lacing. Aroma is nice, the brew smells like vanilla, bourbon, caramel, toffee, brown sugar and dark fruit. I think the taste is similar to the aroma, but there's also the addition of some wood, molasses and dark bread. Mouthfeel/body is medium/full, it's syrupy and coating with low/moderate carbonation. It's a pretty tasty brew, might have to pick up some more of this! It was either $11.99 or $12.99 a bottle, I forget which. Regardless of the price, it's worth trying at least once.
