Well my cousin got married in Athens this past weekend and I finally got to check out Jackie O's. The place is divided into two sections brewery side and bar side. The bar side was the only option when I went. My food was great the deep fried cheese balls were outstanding. I also got a fish sandwich that was quite good, my mom got a burger and it was mediocre. I ended up getting the sampler of all six of the Jackie O's brews that were on tap. Of the six one was pretty bad, four were middle of the road and one was good but not great. I would have liked to have stayed longer but had to go to the wedding. If I ever find myself in Athens I would definitely give it another try, and I would consider making the trip again for one of their bottle releases. But I would not recommend making a lengthy round tip on a non bottle release weekend.

I visited this brewpub on Saturday July 12, 2014, the second day of Ohio Brew Week.
The atmosphere of this pub was incredible. The layout and location of the pub was great, very welcoming and the people only made it better. Beautiful and friendly bartenders and inhabitants are always perfect complements to a few good beers. The service was awesome, they were swamped with customers, but my bartender was able to answer my questions about the pub and the town (being a tourist to the place) and even inquire about which of the brews I enjoyed the most.
The quality was tough to beat. They had an incredible selection (I believe ~10 of their own in-house brews on tap, plus maybe ~5-7 other local brews that they were hosting). The selection included a wide range of tastes; seemed like there was something for everyone. Of the wide variety available, I had a sampler of 8. My sampler included six of their in-house brews; the Mandala Galaxy (Imp. IPA), Baltic Merman (Porter), Secret Hoperation (Imp. IPA), Providence (Farmhouse Saison), Sun Village (IPA), and the Bourban Barrel-aged Skipping Stone (Imp. Stout). These six were accompanied by Fathead's Head Hunter (IPA), and Actual Brewing's Fat Julian - Nitro (Imp. Stout), both of which they were hosting. In my opinion, the majority of these were top-tier beers, and if not, damn close to it. My favorite of which was the Sun Village IPA, which I later grabbed a pint of.
Overall, it was a memorable brewpub and I left without any complaints. The only thing close to a complaint would have been the price of the samplers (which was well understood being that it was Brew Week and that Athens were the hosts). If you're in the area, don't miss it. I certainly hope to be back sometime.

This was a bit of a pilgrimage, anyone that hasn't been needs to go. The two side by side Jackie O's locations run as the brewpub, and the Public House both of which have different hours and different taps. A bit of ways away is the new production brewery that they refer to as the Tap House where you can buy their packaged products and try a limited number of taps they brew at that location. I was there early on a Saturday for lunch, I had my two little ones with me. They "shot some pool" aka it looked like a five and a six year old playing field hockey on a billiards table. The hand crafted wood tables and high top tables and stools are remarkable I've never seen anything like it, along with their tap handles which look pretty much hand carved or at least independently made locally. I did not have a chance to meet Brad the brewmaster, but this place is thriving in Athens, OH.
However, the crew that was their had no problems giving me great service and filling a couple growlers for the road. I was highly pleased with every aspect of my first trip, which has now enticed me enough to make it a dedicated decision to attend a bottle release the next time one comes up.
Great tap selection I chose the Pilsaaz!, Ja Bitte, a Nelson hopped Red IPA, a hoppy wheat Sun Village, the Skipping Stone on Woodford Reserve Barrels, that's a great mix of different styles and I didn't even try their other selections. How could I forget the Mandala DIPA Galaxy hopped version.
Food as a whole was excellent, extremely impressive for what it was probably the best hamburger I've ever had local beef hand formed lettuce tomato and a fried egg over easy. The kids split the fish and chips and we decided to do some dessert with Jenni's Ice Cream from Columbus the vanilla bean and Salted Caramel, which paired extremely well with the Skipping Stone bourbon barrel aged quad.

After two Athens friends independently lit up when I mentioned Jackie O's to them, I knew I was in for a treat. "Fried cheese Curds..." one friend muttered. Fried cheese curds indeed. The grub is just as unique as the beer. I was able to try a seasonal spicebush ale - wow.
I'm certain the place is hopping when class is done for the week, but even on a lazy day, the upstairs deck is a great place to sit out and enjoy the weather.
