I think this is the best bar in Birmingham for atmosphere, clientele, food (just sandwiches/soup but they are great), and service (no table service--you order your drinks from the bar and food from the kitchen, but the staff is great), with a reasonable bottle selection. A previous reviewer said that some high-end bottles can get pricey, and that is true, but that really only applies to about 8 beers (Deliriums and some others that are very expensive by the 4-pack). Beers are normally served by the bottle--there is no draft at the Garage. If the beer snob in you is fine with that, then there should be something in a bottle here to make you happy. If you want a glass, ask your bartender--they have frozen ones too.
Go here for the atmosphere and the company, the food and the staff to see old friends, and find a beer you like amongst the bottles.

I've been to this place many times over the last decade. My wife is from Birmingham and this used to be her hangout back when we first met. I really like the atmosphere here- kinda grungy, kinda cool with a great casual feel and outdooe space. All the selections are in bottles, and the selection is just okay- but thats primarily because the Alabama selection is just okay. What they have is fresh and usually a bit too cold. People are frindly, but not exactly knowledgeable. A very comfortable hangout, but not really a beer destination

Grabbed a can of Guiness ($5) after work when visiting Birmingham. The real appeal of this place is the tucked away location and intimate atmosphere. Small bar that only has bottles, but everything is kept on ice and cases of beer line the walls. Multiple tvs with some flat-screens. Chilled with a bunch of friendly regulars and some young doctors drinking domestics. Male and female bartenders were attentive, but not bothersome as things were a little slow.
The big issue isn't with the actual bar, but with the laws restricting what is available in Alabama. That being said, I believe a good bar actually needs at least a few taps and those are missing. If you are looking for someplace off the beaten trail, yet easy enought to get to (right off major road), check out Garage Cafe. There are plenty of other more sterile places around the city to visit for more of a sports bar scene, but this is a nice hole in the wall kind of place.

In my humble opinion, this is THE bar to go to in Birmingham. While the selection in Alabama is limited because of the prohibition laws, this bar has everything they can. Very few taps, but many bottles.
The atmosphere is especially great. The inside is adequate, but it can get crowded sometimes. There's a patio out back with fountains and tables. They've spread everything out enough so that it's social but not crowded.
Some of the more rare selections are a little pricey, but if you want something standard there's nothing to worry about. If you're in Birmingham, I highly suggest checking this place out. Better selection than Dave's or anywhere else I've been.
