Don't let the small storefront and parking deter you - the place is surprisingly large and has quite a decent selection.
Needham St. is a nightmare, but this place is certainly worth a visit - especially if you regularly visit Marty's.
They don't have quite the selection of something like Colonial in Acton, MA - but they've got a great selection of a lot of the top beers (Rogue, Southern Tier, Smuttynose, etc) and certainly enough that I have never tried.
Mike C, the beer manager, is extremely helpful, too. Ask for him if you're a beer snob.

This is the parent of my home store and shares a connection with Auburndale Liquors and Post Road Wine & Spirits. However, of the four stores, this one has the best selection. As you walk into the store, and follow down the first isle, you can see the bomber shelf starting almost at the register and it goes all the way down to the end of the wall, where the wall opens up into the case alcove. More beer in a couple more isles and space dedicated to 12s and cases is substantial. Some staff is helpful--if you happen to find the owner's son or another beer guy. But the grunts don't really respond positively to questions or know whom to ask. But once you find someone knowledgeable, they are good at answering your questions, looking up your queries. They also know the stock, which is an advantage, and they know it well enough to remember what they sent to Needham. This is good because they share the same monthly specials and if something was sent out and is no longer available in Newton, the other store is only 2 miles down the street (literally the same street). Sometimes, the new/rare items they "forget" to lay out, so you have to ask. This was the only store I noticed to have Maine Lunch on the shelf (got one earlier elsewhere, but it was in the back room). Wine selection is a bit pricier and liquor can be haphazard, but overall not bad on all three fronts. Prices are typical for Massachusetts, which is a bit high over national average.
Update 3/8/14: Upped the selection index a bit to reflect current lineup. Also note that it's worth it to be on the mailing list for special events (although most are related to wine), as this is the only store in MA to have offered the first release of Spencer for under $15 through the email list.

Right down the street from my place I would consider this my "go to" stop for the essentials and sometimes find some amazing stuff just sitting on the shelf. Timing has been good to me and the short commute helps when the special releases hit as they do get some. Location, location, location...
Where it is isn't as important as who they are though. Always friendly staff and great at helping me find what I need even if they have no clue what I'm talking about. That's where Mike comes in. If Mike knows you love beer and pop your head in every so often, he's there with info on the latest releases and what he has out back. In my craft beer beginnings last year, the first big release I saw was KBS. I sent beer mail around to a few places and Mike sent one back (having never met, spoke with or messaged with me before) saying he had a 4 pack set aside if I could swing by that day. That's the sort of service you get here once you introduce yourself. Let's just say, thanks to Mike, I was able to at least try CBS at a recent event. All around great guy and one of my pillars in the beer community.
Overall the selection is decent. I have a feeling that it will get better but the essentials are there. Sixpoint, 21st Amendment, Goose Island, Allagash, Stone, Sam Adams, Harpoon...most of what you'd find elsewhere. Decent Belgium stuff too. On occasion, the "back room" stuff ends up on the shelves for the taking (I'm lookin' at you Bourbon County Rare).
Decent stuff on the shelves, good location for me and brilliant service make this a near weekly stop for my beer needs.

Atmosphere is pretty good. There are some characters who work here, and they always make for good conversation. The area is pretty nice, but turning left (or even right) out of this place is a real hassle between 4 and 6 PM.
Quality is good. I can often find some beers here that I can't find elsewhere near me. They have some cool growlers out back, but their BMC selection certainly dominates the craft section.
The service is pretty good, I guess. I sometimes ask what's new, what's limited, etc. They sometimes can tell me, sometimes they can't. I have a feeling that wine and BMC is their main business.
Selection is pretty weak, honestly. A lot of 12 packs of Sam Adams, Harpoon, Magic Hat, etc. Not a large area devoted to bombers/rarities. What they have is nice, though.

This is definitely one of the best in the area - great selection at an even better price. It is kind of inconvenient trying to make a left out of the parking lot during rush hour, but it is a great location that serves quite a bit of people. Great beer selection in both cold fridge and room temp sections.
If you're looking for an all around good place to purchase whatever it is you're interested in, then this is a good bet, even if it is something specific. Products offered range from the cheapest boxed wine to $350 bottles of actual Champagne.

Great place on a busy street. Huge wine selection and a great big bottle craft brew selection. I've been there many times and been able to catch a couple of the distributors and they are always willing to talk (especially about their beer). The staff is never shorthanded I always see tons of nicely dressed workers running all over the place because it usually has a good amount of people inside.
I recently went to a great beer tasting they held that had about 10+ breweries featuring a bunch of locals. However Dogfish and Chimay were also there.
I was buying a 6pack of Pork Slap for a friend and couldn't find it anywhere. They had 3 different people working on finding me the last one. That was somehow cold.
Great place with friendly helpful staff but very busy location.
I found multiple bottles of Sculpin here as well.

Worth the extra little dirve and the hassle of the traffic of Highland Ave. The full name is Upper Falls Discount Liquors and for the combination of the selection and the very reasonable prices, this is the place I am going to patronize. I bought a Newport Storm Octoberfest, 2 Mayflower Porters, a Blue Hills IPA, and a Harpoon IPA 6 pack for a total of 6 6-packs and grand total was $50 even. Quite a deal.
There's a whole aisle devoted to locals: Smutty, Harpoon, Wachusett, Cambridge, Berkshire, Watch City, Long Trail, etc.

Absolutely my go to packy! i would definatly deal with the nightmare that is Needham St. to go there any day. the selection is not huge but i've yet to walk out of there without something that caught my eye. Beer guy Mike is the best, so if they dont have it..simply ask, if he can get it he absolutely will. they place is full of quality employees who will go outta their way if you need it.
bigger selection does not always mean a better place.
give them a shot, i promise you wont be disappointed (so long as you are willing to ask Mike for something if you want it).

I recently revisited this store after living out of state for a year and was pleased to see their selection has increased and dramatically improved.
They have a large beer room in the back with stacks of micro-cases and imports. They also have a big walk in cooler with a good selection of chilled brews.
What really blew me away though was their selection and presentation of big bottled beers. They carry enough of the main brands; Rogue, Stone, Ommegang, Chimay ect. but they also have a more in depth selection than other area stores. I found some Troeg, Founders, Goose Island, Hitachino, Delirium, Urthel, and some other real nitche items.
They even had a small discount section with some great deals on closeouts. I asked the beer guy there (Mike) why they were ditching some of these great beers and he told me they just needed to make room for new ones.
Mike was very helpful and I walked out with a case of large bottles, and they even gave me a 15% discount for buying in bulk.
All in all, great store(huge wine and liquor seletion as well) great staff, and easy to find. I definately suggest a visit if you're in the Boston/Newton area.
