Poured from a bottle into a tulip glass

Appearance: a dark brownish red with little head.

Smell: first i smelled raisin bread. then there was malts and fruits. there is some caramelized sugars in there also.

Taste: Wo boy now here is a great taste. it taste almost like it smells. First there is a earthy taste that is followed by fruit flavors and the raisin is the most prominent of them.

Mouthfeel: It is a little dry. It has the right amount of carbonation. It is lighter than i thought it would be. it goes down smooth. It is warming also.

Drinkability: A very drinkable beer, a lot lower ABV (6.50%) than others for this style. I wish i had bought more of these it would be a great one to cellar. (708 characters)

I saw this special release beer in a neighboring city and decided to give it a try.

Poured into a regular ol' pint glass. Nice 1 inch head that is a bit tan in color. There is nice lacing on the glass. Beer color is dark reddish brown.

Smells of malts and fruits. Absolutely spot on for this style.

The taste does not disappoint after such a brilliant smell. Creamy, hints of fruit, then a great malt finish. If I didn't know any better, I would think I was drinking a beer from Belgium. Smooth, not overly carbonated, full of flavor. Randy hit the mark with this one. (573 characters)

Poured from a 16oz bottle into a Duvel tulip.

No more than 1 finger of head, most of which didn't stick around too long. What foam did remain laced the glass pretty well, however.

It smelled wonderful! A little sweet and fruity but mostly malty with a caramel note that was amazing.

The taste followed the smell very well, though it wasn't quite as sweet as the smell suggested. The flavor was pretty much perfect - this is my new beer benchmark. Not too sweet but no bitterness and an intermixed caramel/biscuity almost creamy taste. Simply amazing.

The mouthfeel was very good - it wasn't as unctuous as Abt 12, but was still full and smooth. Not syrupy but also not over carbonated.

This would be a little rich - both on the pocketbook and the mouth - for an everyday beer but for a special beer it drinks very well. The lower ABV I'm sure helps but I never really noticed the alcohol with all of the other flavors going on.

I expected a solid beer from Sprecher but this goes way beyond that. The only problem is that it's a one off. Looks like I better start stocking up now. (1,086 characters)

Let me start by saying that I am not the world's biggest fan of belgian style beers. I'm more of a hop head and don't typically go looking for something like this. That being said, if there are more dubbels like this then I have seriously been missing out.

I have to say thanks to my co-worker Rob who assured me I would become a believer. He was right.

the color is a reddish brown, almost copperish in color. small amount of light tan head that dissipates quickly.

the smell. wow. sweetened plums, figs, baking spices, christmas in new england, caramel, brown sugar, mildly intoxicating

the taste is true to the smell. Again you get hit with the candied figs and plums, the faint caramel, sweet malty goodness, those same baking spices. the balance of flavors is almost perfect

mouthfeel, even at only 10% of the total score, gets a bit too much weighting IMO, but here there is a reason to up that number. creamy body, not the constant tickling style carbonation you get with some belgians as someone else mentioned, but what you get here is just as good if not better

Sprecher typically goes a bit overboard with their beers and I didn't expect to finish this bottle, let alone like it, but I find myself at the end of it wanting more and more. Easy to drink, easy to sip. As I said earlier, the balance is spot on. I will definitely grab a few at Discount this weekend.

Poured from a bottle into my Duvel tulip.

A: Plum red brown with about a finger of light tan head. Decent amount of soapy lace.

S: sweet candied dark fruit, lots of caramel and brown sugar, lightly spicy, very pleasant and inviting aroma

T: malt sweetness is a bit more mild than the nose, this is a good thing, moderate spice, dark fruits drizzled with candied sugar, smooth bready finish helps tie this into a almost perfect flavor profile

M: Medium to full creamy body with just enough carbonation bite

D: I'm usually critical of Sprecher and this is a style that really have no love for. Well slap my momma! Thia is a absolutely spectacular beer. Super easy drinking with tons of balanced flavor. I will be picking more of this up soon. (808 characters)

Bottle into a big red wine glass, with a very grateful nod to Chris (RedHaze). Helluva'n extra, Chris!

Pours dark brown opaque in the center with just a bit of translucent mahogany around the edges. A gentle pour stirs up pretty much no head at all. Just a few soapy bubbles that disappear quickly. Adjusted up one notch because the app. is simply weighted too highly on this site.

Nose is really beautful. The first whiff conjures very clear images of fresh baked raisin bread - deep, rich, bready, lots of very clear raisins, brown sugar with just a bit of cinnamon, a wee bit of red grape skins, and just enough alcohol to add exactly the right layer of complexity. Beautiful, perfect.

Taste is excellent as well. That same raisin bread character is right here as well, though with a few added bells and whistles balancing it out this time. Fairly dry, starts out with a bit of earthy dark fruit, with raisins emerging about mid palate along with a dryer rendition of the incredibly vivid nose - a bit of bready malts alongside some earthy, almost breadcrusty notes that serve to balance, noticeable alcohol bite serves to add a bit of heat and segue into the finish. Finish is, again, earthy, dry, nice dark fruits, bit of breadcrust, very subtle spiciness echoing those earlier brown sugar and cinnamon notes. Very good.

Mouthfeel disappoints, but only because of how good the rest of the beer has been. Where I'm looking for a fluffy but soft, active carbonation, I instead get a very light, subtle one that adds just a bit of bite and no real creaminess or fluffiness. Still, the body is close to perfect - medium-full, with no stickiness at all, dry all the way around, and something about it that just makes you want another sip immediately. The palate is left just dry enough that that next sip really can't come soon enough.

Drinkability is excellent, again. Only the carbonation holds it back from being perfect. The lowest-abv dubbel I've ever had, as well as one of the best American versions. This is a very, very nice beer. (2,047 characters)

Poured a murky brown in color w/ a 1/2 finger white head that left minimal lacing, and dissipated quickly. Nose was of caramel, toffee, breadiness, and banana/clove. The taste was the same as the nose w/ the addition of mild hop bite on the finish that did not linger, prototypical for the style. Medium bodied and creamy due to appropriate carbonation. Definately could drink alot of this beer w/ the ABV being only 6.50%, of which none was detected.

Overall, I have never been that impressed w/ Sprecher in general, but this beer was a pleasant change and has motivated me to sample more from them. Great American interpretation of a classic Belgian style that was spot on for what it should be! (775 characters)

I poured this beer into a stemmed Christoffel glass, a nice brown red. the tan head disappears quickly. Smells of sweet grains, dark dried fruits and spices.

Lots of flavor going on. The taste closely follows the nose: dark fruits sugar, some spice, maybe some caramel.

No alcohol heat on this dubbel.

Not sticky and syrupy like one expects from a dubbel.

Very smooth and drinkable.

Paired this one up with a grilled ribeye, steamed summer vegetables and augratin rice. A very good pairing. A imported Belgian dubbel may have been to hot to match up well. (561 characters)

My first Belgian that I have tried and reviewed...

A: Has a dark amber color. Almost a brick color. Nice cream colored head on it, about a half an inch when I first poured it.

S: WOW! This is one of the best smelling beers I have ever smelt before. Reminds me of a much stronger nut brown smell. Has a hint of vanilla? Not really sure about that.

T: Phenomenal taste. Light nose. Reminiscent of the smell. If you keep it you mouth then the taste stays the same. The finish is a much stronger nut taste. I have trouble describing the taste, other than that it is just really good (after reading some reviews I have learned that it is raisins and malt). I do know that the finish is much stronger than the nose and that the taste stays in your mouth for awhile. My favorite part is that the smell is the exact same as the taste. The two compliment each other for a full flavored effect.

M: The carbonation is light and not overpowering. The beer goes down very smooth and pleasant.

D: I could drink this all day. The medium body keeps you from feeling full and the smoothness keeps every sip enjoyable. For my first Belgian, I would say I am officially a fan of the Dubbel style. Near perfect beer. (1,202 characters)

16 oz bottle poured into a Duvel tulip.
6.50% ABV, 10168 on the neck (June 16th, 2010). Interesting because when I picked it up today I was told it was bottled just today. Either way it's as fresh as humanly possible.

A - The tall pour froths up a one-and-one-half finger dense light khaki-colored head. The beer is a beautiful clear mahogany red-brown with sharp red-orange highlights in the light. The head isn't retained all too well as it sinks to a creamy pile leaving lackluster spots of lace on the glass for a Belgian style.

S - Dark Belgian candi sugar pairs well with the up-front toasted malts. Deep, dark fruit esters from the Belgian yeast play a pivotal role despite being in the background. Complex notes of cherries, fig, and prune add a layer of dimension to the hearty, biscuity, caramel malt nose. Serious hop-heads won't find much of their favored aroma in this dubbel but it absolutely hits the mark on the style.

T - Round, deeply toasted malts push right to the forefront of the flavor profile hitting fast with a smooth, dense breadiness and sweet caramel cube flavor. Belgian yeast and candi sugar aren't messing around either as they follow up the maltiness swiftly. Dark fruit esters still add a fantastic cherry, fig, and prune complexity while the alcohol becomes very slightly noticeable on the back end. The nuances grow nicely as it warms while toffee pokes out through the finish.

M - Very smooth and robust, this dubbel really hits the mark here where most fall flat. A medium level of carbonation allows this beer to go down smoothly. A very light warming sensation finishes up the sweet, malty dubbel.

D - Sprecher's 25th Anniversary dubbel nails the style that seems hard to pin down by some smaller American craft breweries. With a fantastic mouthfeel and comparable taste and aroma to boot, it's a dubbel worth the extra money and definitely worth cellaring to see how it ages. I presume it'll change gracefully to something possibly even better than it is fresh. Nice work Sprecher!

finally able to get ahold of this bottle, i had been waiting forever to give it a try and finally it stumbles into my arms, served cold and in a pint glass.

pour is perfect, dark brown with an incredible head of tan that just comes up and over the top superbly an leaves tons of lacing and coating in its wake. aroma of dark belgian yeast, hints of brown sugar, earthy an evil dark grains and hints at light grasses and interesting notes of malts. flavor smooth, creamy, like velvet as it caresses the tongue and really just puts on an amazing show of flavor. creamy and subtle finish is smooth, sugary and long lasting as the last drop is just as good as the first.

overall it was spot on for the style and everybit worth the wait to get ahold of. an instant classic for me. (777 characters)

poured from a bottle into 16 ounce clear dixie cup. nice cognac color. easy drinker considering the six and a half percent. really clean aftertaste for a belgian "style" beer. my buddy thought they were awesome, he doesn't stray to far from spotted cow so that just screams drinkability! by far one of my favorites from them and we have a sprecher brewpub in the dells, you would be amazed how much better their offerings are on tap. Big thanks go out to BeerFMAndy who included this spectacular beer as one of many extras in a recent trade.

I'll start by saying in no uncertain terms that this is the new benchmark in Belgian Style Dubbels produced on American soil!

Pours a beautiful deep russet color with a thin whispy off white head.

The nose is redolent of Banana's Foster - Sweet caramelized sugar (turbanado) with a strong whiff of ripe banana.

The wonderful aromas carry over to the taste as fruity esters and phenols combined with a copious amount of high quality malt to produce sweet sugary overtones and nuanced stone fruit flavors and figs and prunes to support the banana. So much goodness going on in this relatively lower alcohol offering. Damn this is good and some of the notes strike a remarkable similarity with a good weizenbock. Still this remains largely in Dubbel territory with the lack of spiciness found in those wheat based beers and an increased caramel and toffee presence. Hops were not invited to this party.

Mouthfeel is lush and sticky with droplets of beer clinging to the sides of my glass after each sip.

Drinkability is great for the style as I could easily polish off a couple of these in a sitting.

Overall this is a great way for Sprecher to celebrate its 25th Anniversary. If this beer were local to me it I would be buying it by the case before it disappears! (1,378 characters)

a: poured gently into a st. bernie chalice, lifting a thin, short lived khaki head to the surface, the beer itself a deep amber in color

s: the aroma is big on dark, malty fruits - raisin reduction in particular, date sugars, something of a musty-sweet root vegetable note, red apple, lovely banana esters compliments of the yeast strain

m: carbonation moderate and prickly on the tongue, body somewhere on the heavier end of medium

t: full raisin malts with a caramelized sugar sweetness, cherry, rich, complex fruitcake flavors, dark dessert breads, apple, yeast driven banana esters, turning to a woody, earthy hop and leathery dried fruits at the finish

d: no problem here, a wonderful american example, complex and drinkable

Nice to see Sprecher down here in NC,I have drank a whole lot of Sprecher in my days.Poured into a goblet a deep mahogany brown with a thinner toasted almond colored head,aromas of dark fruit really stand out,plum,raisin,dates,also light yeasty notes.This is one fruity dubbel and I like it,deep raisin flavors along with a fruit cake-like element,light phenols are kept in check pretty well.A real nice dubbel here,not a style I go to often but Iam glad I picked this up today. (478 characters)

16oz. bottle poured into a tulip. Bottled in 2010. . only a month or so ago. Huge thanks to BeerFMAndy for the hookups on this one!

(A)- Pours a dark, yet clear blood red hue that produced a decent tan fluffy head with some good retention behind it.

(S)- A light earthy aroma of clay and yeast followed by big creamy ripe bananas. Finishes with bits of dark fruits like plums and currants. A lovely smell for the style.

(T)- Almost precisely like the smell was. Lightly earthy with clay. Flows into some dark fruits of plum and currants. Finishes in a light creamy bananas. Hints of dry cocoa as it warms up.

(M)- A crisp carbonation level. A great balance of the above flavors. A tad lighter in body and strength than you might expect from the style, but does not disappoint in that way.

(D)- Easily in my mind, one of Sprecher's most successful beers that tastes great while being traditional and to the style at the same time. For the price, this is one of the better Dubbels I have tasted from the states without question. A fine and fitting beer to have to represent 25 years of brewing. appearance: served in my great lakes chalice, very dark mahogany-garnet body, light tan head with minimal retention

smell: sweet and rich - plum, raisin, date, booze, walnut, rich malts, toffee

taste: pretty great dubbel - rich toffee, very smooth, caramel, figs, sweet malts, dates, raisin, plum, black cherry, brown sugar, touch of clove. Nice choice for a 25th anniv beer - one of sprecher's finest

mouthfeel: exception - rich, velvety smooth

An absolutely exquisite example of the style- as far as aroma and taste are concerned. Robust fruits and malts create quite an appetizing and confectionary delight of a beer.

Aromas of dates and figs swirl with licorice, cherries, over-rippened berries, and a mild vinous tartness. Malty aromas give the impression of mild toast, burnt toffee, and interspursed chocolate notes here and there.

This Dubbel pours with an airy-froathy, lightly tanned head that has a great initial stubborn stance but eventually falls to the weight of the sugars. Burgundy to ruby-brown in color, the beer has a mild yeasty haze. Mild on lacing, some legging is evident.

Flavors are very consistent with the characteristic of the nose. With a candied/powdered sugar sweetness acting as a bridge to bring together the fruity esters, browned malts, and subtle spices. Nutty, chocolatey, and toasty the malts give way to the stone fruits (seemingly soaked in rum because of the spicy alcoholic taste) and then toward the peppery, cinnamony, and mildly nutgmeg dryish finish. All this while carrying a port wine-like tawny taste.

The waivering part of the beer is the mouthfeel. While the beer has a smooth, creamy upstart, the beer looses its carbonation quickly giving a rich cola-like feel/flavor on the mouth in a large section of the mid palate. Finishing with a warming and fading body, the beer never reaches the dry feel that is characteristic of authentic Trappist Belgian Ales.

There's no doubt that the aroma and flavor are near world class. But as the beer hits the middle part of the mouth, the procession dies a bit, not allowing the beer to dry or or develop from there on out. (1,673 characters)

Served in a wine goblet

This beer pours a viscous clear reddish-brown/copper color. There is nothing to speak of for head, just very minor surface lacing and coarse bubbles throughout. The aroma is quite pleasant the Belgian yeast gives off a nice bready aroma which mostly covers the scent of alcohol that is there. There is the typical banana and clove esters found in Belgian brews. In addition there are flavors of caramel, honey, and hints of vanilla. The overall aroma can be best described as the most delicious dark rich banana bread that you've ever smelled, one that is heavier on the brown sugar than on the bananas. The flavor is a combination of a few items. The most prominent tastes are banana, clove and orange zest to add a bit of citrus to the mix. I can only assume the hops come through in that slight orange zest flavor. There is shades of slightly roasted caramel malts that are on the back of the tongue. For pouring as thick as it did the body isn't as hefty as I would have assumed. The carbonation significantly assists with the mouthfeel. My recommendation is that you consume this at the 50ish °F that is recommended for the style. If you do that it is one of the smoothest drinking beers you'll have. If you don't do that, you can get a harshness from the alcohol leaving some bitterness on the back of the tongue. I did both, and nowhere on the bottle does it say how to consume it. If done right it's incredibly drinkable, if done wrong it's still not bad. If you can get your hands on one, I suggest you get it. (1,545 characters)

A - Nearly opaque dark ruby color with minimal head. Viscous and Oily looking with a ring of carbonation that sticks around the inner circumference of my glass. Not a hint of lacing to be found.

S - Sweet, Dark, and fruity. Hint of molasses and caramel, with a backbone of yeasty breadiness.

T - Rich and fruity up front. Caramel and roasted figs jump out at me, maybe a hint of prunes and raisins. Finishes sweet and bready with a touch of that familiar Belgian yeast. Very nice.

M - Spot on for the style. Rich and full bodied, although could use a bit more carbonation if anything.

D - I found this to be a very drinkable Belgian. Complex enough to sip and ponder the flavors without being challenging to drink. I plan to snag up a few more of these before they are gone for good. If you enjoy Belgian style ales, this is a worthy purchase. (848 characters)

A. Off white to light tan head that breaks rather quickly. Dark amber to a reddish brown appearance. Leaves very spotty lacing.

S. Belgian-esche nose of sweet fruits (dates and figs) with baking spice and brown sugar. Very inviting nose.

T. Nice flavors here but I expected a bit more after such a nice nose. Raisin, dates, clove and banana dominate the initial attack. Not much to the mid-palate. Some what prickly finish that's a bit short. Good but not great tasting beer.

M. Medium bodied with good creaminess.

D. Goes down easily with no trace of alcohol - I could drink two of these 16 ouncers in one sitting.

I used to drink a ton of Sprecher 5 to 10 years ago. This beer has piqued my interest again - I need to try some more of their beers. (758 characters)

Thanks to Matt for grabbing this up in Wisconsin. Served in a Westvleteren chalice. Some sort of cryptic date code - 23201FL, 101681033.

A - Pours with a thin cap of light tan foam that dissipates to a thin ring and a bit of film, but no lace. Body is a faintly transparent dark purple-brown.

S - The smell is terrific, with notes of banana, maraschino cherries, licorice, candi sugar, cake, dark fruits, and light estery spice. Easily the most convincing American dubbel I've encountered.

T - The taste is significantly heavier on prune and raisin character, with a hint of candi sugar mid-palate, and a finish of anise bitterness and clove spice. The taste isn't quite as good as the aroma, but it's still pretty good.

M - Body is medium, smooth, and perhaps a touch watery. Carbonation is active but thankfully soft and pleasant. Finishes chewy and lightly sticky.

D - The 500ml serving size is surprisingly easy to finish - I was sort of surprised how quickly I finished this one. I'll probably buy a 4-pack when I'm in Wisconsin next. Definitely the best Sprecher offering I've ever encountered. Why wasn't this distributed in Chicago? (1,145 characters)

16 oz twist off bottle.

It pours a dark reddish plum/brown color with a big off-white head. The head quickly recedes but has some nice lacing.

Rarely do American beers compare precisely to their Belgian counterparts, but in this case, the malt bill and the yeast are perfect. This reminds me of countless Belgian Dubbels. It is dark and fruity with a hint of yeasty spice. There is a hint of ripe banana.

The taste follows, it is fruity, dark, it has all the elements of a Belgian dubbel. There is a slight hint of Sprecher's brewing process that is totally identifiable but it tastes like it is from Belgium.

The mouthfeel is slightly watery for the style and that is really its only flaw. (694 characters)

Pours out of a 16oz. bottle a ruby brown color with a finger of white head with some staying power. not much lacing.

smell is strong banana, brown sugar.

taste is raisin, brown sugar, hint of banana, hint of dark chocolate and dates. very complex and tasty flavor profile.

mouthfeel is moderately chewy, but a bit flat for a dubbel. could use a bit more carbonation for my liking.

flavors are nice and im really digging this beer, but the low carbonation detracts from drinkability. One or two is all I want. Excellent dubbel from and American brewery. (557 characters)

Warm-toned dark beer with Belgian overtones.

Beautiful coppery brown in the St. Bernardus glass. Nice head and excellent creamy carbonation in the mouth. Light bodied but rich with flavor. More than a touch of sweetness but a nice sharp acidity that is mellowed by the long roasted malty aftertaste. Some dried currant flavor, maybe apples, a touch of spice cake, brown sugar. But it has a nice watery taste that is pleasant.

A refreshing style of dubbel that is very drinkable rather than being a curiosity. One of the better ones I've tried, and I am a Dubbel fan. (568 characters)
