Nice start to this brew, hefty head, promising looking yeasty haze. A swirl and pour of the bottle's last remains helps substantiate the beer's medium body. The aroma is citrusy with lemon and some banana. However, there's a bit of funk in here. Some strange farm, horse blanket notes are detected in the aroma and flavor. Hmm...this is a Hefe Weizen and not a lambic (?) - curious. Mouthfeel is spot on for a Hefe. Though this brew seems to be well regarded, it seems as though I'm not enjoying it as much. I'm a fan of a good Hefe but this is a bit off.

This one is destined to make me feel sad and melancholy. It was part of a local, in-person trade with tone77 which then became a part of my interminable bottle backlog. I have come to the realization that I will be unable to attend the 2014 Great Taste of the Midwest this year. Boo hoo. Only my second miss in eleven years! I raise this beer in a toast to my MKE homies: Mike Romans; John & Laura Burke and the displaced Jurkowski, who I will see in two weeks.

From the bottle: "A cloudy appearance and an immense creamy head are characteristic of this lightly hopped Bavarian-style brew."; "This coarse-filtered wheat ale is fermented with a German yeast for a refreshing clove spiciness and hints of citrus fruit."

I agitated the heck out of this one in the bottle, then let fly into my glass, but I still only got a finher of off-white head that quickly fell to wisps. Color was a hazy, not cloudy, deep-gold (SRM = > 5, < 7). Nose had a buttery, butterscotch odor. That said, I know that such is considered a flaw in most styles, but it is also one that I rarely pick up. Was it diacetyl? We shall see. Mouthfeel was thin. Taste was not quite right. I was getting the usual banana esters, but in a tangy way, not as sweet as I am used to. I was getting the banana/clove esters on the finish, but in a muted way. Not bad, but I have had better. Give my fond regards to MKE, Madison, and Wisconsin in general!

I had this craft beer while I was in Florence (Firenze), Italy at a local craft beer bar. When poured into a weizen glass it has a chazy gold color, smallish head, little carbonation, and a yeasty aroma. It has a real yeasty and picey, with hints of cloves and oranges. It goes down easy, with no edge, and quenches the palate.

16 oz bottle poured into a Sprecher weizen glass.
4.2% ABV, 14030 Julian date.

A - This hefe is a gently hazed pale yellow that displays the beer's abundant carbonation with ease. As the volume becomes greater in the more bulbous part of the glass the pale yellow changes to a golden honey where the billowing white head is formed instantly and slowly settles to a rocky skim of foam below heavy lacing.

S - The tall, rocky head does a great job of retaining this beer's classic aromatic yeast esters. Dusty earthiness and crumbly white clay emerge from the yeast but it also brings fourth clove spice and notes of bubblegum and banana that gently wash over the soft wheat base.

T - Pungent with husky wheat, earthy clay, and faint white pepper esters, Sprecher's hefe is a lot earthier than some of the more fruity German counterparts. However, some banana and bubblegum yeast characteristics make it through with a refreshing lemony citrus zest adding a twist to this hefe.

M - While the carbonation is strong, this hefe remains pretty creamy and lighter bodied, trailing off with just a slight crispness. Sprecher's hefe is a little more coarse on the tongue, finishing with a bone dry earthiness.

O - Crisp and refreshing overall, Sprecher's Hefe Weiss brings plenty of the classic German yeast to the foreground of this beer but the majority of it focuses on some of the more earthy characteristics of clay and white pepper as opposed to the fruity bubblegum and banana notes others exhibit. The earthiness is amplified by the huskier grainy wheat flavor, which makes the beer ever so slightly more coarse on the tongue but in the end, it's one drinkable summertime beer I'd be happy to put back on a hot day!

Poured into a weizen glass:

Pours hazed to clouded golden with a creamy white lasting head. Lacing sticks.

The smell is of banana-clove - leaning more towards the clove.

The taste is of sweet banana upfront. Clove soon comes in and surpasses the banana in the dry finish. Just a hint of noble hops mix in, while keeping the sweet and tangy character that fits the style stay forward. It has a tangy finish.

It is crisp, refreshing and very easy to drink.

This is enjoyable brew. Sweet banana is noticeable, though it is more clove forward, as mentioned. Fits style and drinks easy!

16 ounce bottle into weizen glass, bottled on 8/16/2012. Pours very hazy golden orange color with a 1 finger dense white head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of ripe banana, pear, apricot, apple, orange peel, clove, wheat, honey, bread, light bubblegum, herbal, and yeast earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of malt, and fruity/earthy yeast ester notes; with solid strength. Taste of ripe banana, pear, apricot, apple, orange peel, wheat, honey, bread, clove, light bubblegum, herbal, and yeast earthiness. Lingering notes of banana, pear, apricot, apple, orange peel, wheat, honey, bread, light clove, light bubblegum, herbal, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Nice and pleasant complexity and robustness of malt and fruity/earthy yeast ester flavors; with a good malt/yeast flavor balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a smooth, crisp, and lightly creamy/bready mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with zero warming present after the finish as expected of 4.2%. Overall this is a nice hefeweizen. Good balance and complexity of malt and fruity/earthy yeast flavors; with good robustness for the ABV and very smooth drinking. A nicely enjoyable offering.
