650ml. Whole cone hops.... ok...

It pours a reddish amber with a frothy white head that leaves some nice lacing.

The smell is weird. Definitely some interesting English yeast esters. It actually smells like a squashy earthy melon. There are hints of flowers.

The flavor continues with the melon. It is like a flowery melon in the flavor. Really unique. Some butterscotch and light bitterness follows.

Not sure how much I like this one.

22 oz bottle poured into a Sprecher nonic.
4.9% ABV, 12132[...] on shoulder in yellow (Bottled May 12th, 2012)

A - Crystal clear, Hooligan vibrantly shines it's golden clover honey color astoundingly! Sparkly loose bubbles resemble a fresh snowfall as the tall rocky head falls slowly. Thick gobs of off-white foam clutch the pint's inner walls.

S - Strong aromatic hops erupt into the air from a tall pour. Incredibly complex, the varieties of hops involved offer sticky, resiny pine similar to crushing fresh hops in one's hands, strong, assertive floral attributes, and a followup of lemongrass citrus. It's hard to see past the earthy, boldly dry-hopped nose, but some bready caramel malt falls behind.

T - Don't let the heavily dry-hopped aroma fool you, Hooligan is nicely balanced in flavor. With biscuity malt undertones and faint caramel sweetness, the bold, fresh hop flavor of lemongrass, citrus zest, and near-extreme floral presence is kept form being too strong.

M - At cask temperature, Hooligan has a very smooth, medium-light body with delicate but spritzy carbonation and a bone dry hop bitterness on the finish. Controlled with some degree of balance, the bitter finish is right on par with style; dominant but not overpowering the hop flavor.

O - By far one of Sprecher's best offerings, Hooligan displays the versatility and prowess of the brewmaster as hoppy beers certainly aren't one of their usual offerings. This English Pale Ale packs a hoppy wallop from bold aromatic nose to full-flavored and deliciously bitter finish. Hooligan is the perfect beer to session at a pub or on a warm summer day, and one that would work extremely well in a cask or firkin with fresh hops. Grab Hooligan while it lasts cause it won't be around forever!

I was able find a bottle of this at Woodman’s in Rockford, Il for $5.99. This limited brew from Sprecher’s is unique from their year round selection. Scent is mostly bitter from whole cane hops mixed with some citrus. Taste is bitterer than you would expect from a 57 IBU rating. Drinks more as a sipping beer due to the complex taste. Texture is decent but still is a little too thin for my liking. A pretty decent attempt here by Sprecher’s to do something different.

Pours out into a room-temp glass stein a hazy coppery amber with about a minute's worth of single-fingered soda-fizzy bubbles for a head. Even after the head has dissipated, aggressive bubbling action is clearly rampant throughout, yet no real lacing is present.
Smells mostly of biscuit malt and fresh green-grassy / floral hopping, with just a hint of mustiness and lightly-buttered baked butternut squash sort of aroma as an aroma accent. Different, but I dig it. Tastes is initially a sharp and dry cracker malt with a tiny dab of marmite on top. It certainly has a nice crisp bite, thanks to the extremely high amount of carbonation. In fact, I find myself in a truly rare moment : desiring -less- carbonation so that I may taste more hidden nuances. This almost never happens to me... Back on topic : the flavor sweetens up a bit in the midsip but dries out again when the bitter floral and herbal hopping rises up and recedes gently again in the finish. I just wish the flavor was as complex as the aroma was. All of those sparkly bubbles are having a flavor de-amplifying effect upon my palate. Other than these minor complaints, overall I would say it was a pretty good brew, worth trying at least once.

Hooligan pours a cooper color with a small long lasting tan head. There is a strong grapefruit aroma, a lot of earthy tones. The taste is aggressive but still well balanced, toffee and crisp malty backbone with a nice hop bite, that finishes with a nice dryness. A bit on the watery side, but strong flavors never the less. Overall its a hoppeir English pale ale, nothing special, but I like it and would get again.
