12 oz twist off bottle poured into a Sierra Nevada imperial pint.
6.0% ABV, Skewed numbers printed on shoulder.
A - Fire-y ruby amber in color, this clear and vibrant beer pours with a dense and tall khaki head which is retained remarkably well. Very little lace remains on the glass, however, sort of limiting the overall sexiness of it's appearance.
S - Sticky malty sweetness oozes out from behind the tall head of this beer. Plenty of Munich sweetness and caramel cube notes overlap the rich bready Vienna malt base. Toast and biscuit are common Oktoberfest traits which carry through in this beer. Earthy hops are light on the finish, not really tying themselves to any variety in particular, and sort of distancing themselves from the noble buds in particular. The one thing that does really hinder the aroma of this otherwise nice Oktoberfest is this lingering scent of dirty, unfiltered water and light mustiness on the finish which is not the most pleasant contribution.
T - Chop Block Oktoberfest arrests the least pleasing contribution to the aroma; the dirty finish. This attribute either disappears or hides behind the malty flavor and sudden surge of hoppiness. It's no IPA, but the flavor is much more balanced, really encouraging the involvement of some light spice and herbal attributes which, in turn suppresses some of the bigger malt offerings in the nose; Munich sweetness trails off along side toasted Vienna notes.
M - Crisp, clean, and smooth, Chop Block is, with all it's stronger malt and hop characteristics, a remarkably drinkable beer. Leading in with a spritzy carbonation which never overpowers, this medium-bodied Oktoberfest finishes moderately dry and finely bitter; just enough to encourage a quick follow-up sip.
O - Game On Chop Block Oktoberfest might not be a world-class, prime example of an Oktoberfest, but this beer is solid. It will get the job done if you're looking for an easy drinking Oktoberfest that holds true to the style's standards while remaining rather thoughtless and sessionable.
