I'm getting off to an explosive start with The CANQuest (tm) today! I was toying with a bus trip up to a book sale, but the county bus service is so spotty on weekends that a) it would really eat into my time today & b) just as with beer, the book backlog here at Chez Woody is stunning. I made a quick turnaround trip to Haddonfield, NJ via PHL last evening (!) & decided to take a number of Perry Mason paperbacks to The Book Trader at 2nd & Market for store credit. I had my eye on a couple of SoHo Crime novels from a previous visit & figured that if I could get a wee bit towards them, I would be making out. My jaw dropped when the counterman told me that I was to get $25. in credit for my books! I showed him my two & left with the remaining credit on file. They will be getting my repeat business & why should I traipse around buying more books when I have plenty to read & lotsa beer to drink while doing so?
From the CAN: "Milwaukee's Original Craft Brewery"; "Fire Brewed"; "Brewed with Explosive Amounts of Citra & Simcoe Hops!"
I Crack!ed open the vent & beCAN a slow, gentle C-Line Glug since clarity seemed to be a distinct possibility. The immediate foaming action led to the formation of two-plus fingers of dense, foamy, rocky, tawny head with very good retention that left a load of sticky lacing in its wake. 8=( I may need a jackhammer to remove it all. Color was a gorgeous Amber (SRM = > 7, < 9) with NE-quality clarity & and deep-amber highlights, just missing being coppery. 8=O Nose was redolent with fresh-squeezed grapefruit juice as Simcoe the naughty kitty sat in the corner doing her business, with just a light wafting of caramel malts. 8=O Mouthfeel was medium. The taste was not as intense as on the nose, but it was still quite citrus juicy and bitter with a light cattiness as Simcoe finished up. It was NOT an AIIPA/ADIPA, so I am going to submit a ChANge request, but it was still quite good for an AIPA. It was not that soft, rounded tropical fruitiness that was all the rage, but instead, a solid punch of hoppy bitterness. Mmm. This was scratching an itch early in the day. Finish was dry & bitter, just the way that I prefer them to be. YMMV.

Poured from a 12 oz. can, which says 6.25% abv on it. Has an orange color with a 1 inch head. Smell is of fruity pebbles. Taste is fruity, citrus, dry, moderate bitterness. Feels medium/full bodied in the mouth and overall is an easy drinking and enjoyable beer.

On tap at Oak and Stone. A darker amber look, with all sorts of candy-sweet aroma. So the bitter hops is a bit of a surprise. This is not one that I would keep a deep shelf of, but it's an interesting change of pace for a bored palate.

L- Didn’t pour it out of the can (sorry in a hotel)
S- sweet, stale honey
T- not an IPA, I could only stand two sips before I poured it out. The aluminum can has more value then the beer inside.
F- thick, lingers with the same initial taste, which also leaves a horrible aftertaste.
O- save your money and buy something else.

There is a magenta dot on the bottom of the can but there isn't any date code listed.
Appearance: It has a burnt umber appearance with an average sized white head. It has good clarity.
Aroma: It smells just like grapefruit juice. The term "grapefruit" is thrown around a lot but I actually had to check the can to see if this was brewed with fruit juice or an extract of some kind (none is listed). Although the beer doesn't have a diverse aroma it smells pretty awesome.
Taste: Up front there is a light bit of caramel sweetness and it is sharply cut off by a very strong lemon flavor. There is a nice grapefruit flavor mixed with what tastes like lemon. The citrus character is very strong in this beer. It's hard to relate how pervasive it is.
Mouthfeel: It has a nice bitterness with a pretty clean finish.
Overall: The beer is simply awesome. It is loaded with citrus flavor and aroma that would win any citrus hop lover over. I would absolutely buy it again and I would highly recommend at least buying a can of this and trying it for yourself. You will undoubtedly be smacked in the face by a 2x4 of hop aroma and revel in its wonderful lemon flavor.

Clearly this beer has been reformulated, though you wouldn't know it to look at Sprecher's Web site. Currently listed at 6.25 abv, this Citra & Simcoe IPA has a distinctive grapefruit aroma & taste that is somewhat inexplicable but otherwise quite enjoyable.

Poured from can in the comfort of my kitchen. Smelled sweet and almost like a shandy. Not much head. It is called Citra Bomb and it lands a Citrus punch. It is not sour or overly sweet but obviously citrus-y. Closer to lemon than Citra hop flare of similar beers. You would have to like heavy citrus beers to like this one.
Overall I liked it (because I don't mind citrus flavors in my IPAs). It is smooth due to the citrus play. Though, I would not buy this if I wanted a hoppier IPA or didn't like fruity tasting beer. Though it is not a session ale...this would be perfect ice cold on a hot summer day.

Poured from the bottle into a glass.
Murky orange color; barely see-through.
Nice white head; a curtain of lace.
Bold citrus nose; orange with a hint of mango. A great smell!
Medium mouthfeel.
This is a home run; delicious orange flavor but not overly bitter. Best Sprecher I've had. Drink this fresh!
