Pours a very carbonated nice coppery amber color with nice thick 2 inch head that laces down the glass very well.

Smell is of toasty malts an fresh wheat with slight floral hops.

Taste is very dry, toasty, and breadlike with maltiness but little sweetness with the malts and a nice strong Grassy hop finish. Very balanced and enjoyable.

The mouthfeel is very full and enjoyable for this style of beer.

Sprecher Oktoberfest

Poured from a 16 oz bottle into a shaker pint. Served cold...

A) Cloudy amber with a nice creamy head. Nice retention... No lacing... Good looking brew right here.

S) Very malty... Bready with a little whiff of caramel sweetness.

T) Malt dominates the flavor, which isn't a surprise for the style, but I found this a bit grainy for my tastes. There is some light hop bitterness on the backend.

M) Medium bodied with light carbonation. Could have been a little more lively. Went down okay...

O) A pretty average O-Fest in my opinion.

Nice medium pour to a very nice gold amber and a rich head retaining acceptable lacing.

I like the smell. Im getting honey with a little bit of fruit. The taste is typical Oktoberfest. Sweet malt with a very light after taste, without the dry bite I usually like in my standard premium Lagers. But thats OK ; Its an Octoberfest. I find the taste delicious.

I bought it as a single. I'd buy a 6 pack if I saw it next year this time. Its a pretty beer to look at and a rich honey malty taste that begs a fall indulgance. I enjoyed this beer.

Sprecher Oktoberfest seemed noticeably thick coming out the bottle and indeed looks just like maple syrup in the glass. It has a deep amber colour and density that prevents any substantive clarity (misleading given its sheeny gloss). There is not a single visible sign of carbonation.

Those who write the rules on style guidelines insist that "any caramel aroma is inappropriate" in Märzens, yet, curiously enough, it's a flavour that people often default to when trying to describe this kind of rich, malty lager - and Sprecher boasts of it right on the label. Whether "appropriate" or not, who cares? This beer's dark caramel profile is delicious.

I will concede, however, that the butterscotch-like features and subtle dried fruitiness in this Oktoberfest - a lager intended to be smooth, medium-bodied, and engineered for high-volume drinking - actually remind me of an English Barleywine (a stronger and more complex ale).

Indeed, while most Märzens are easily enjoyed by the 2L Stein-full, you might want to take this one a pint at a time. It's heavy stuff and plenty rich too. Of course, these aren't undesirable qualities - quite the contrary - but know that what you're getting into includes plenty of roasted nuttiness, a hoppiness that tastes like dead leaves and a drying, steely texture.

Sprecher Oktoberfest may not be a lager suited to seventeen days worth of gluttonous drunken celebration, but it's a quintessential cool weather, fall-time lager: it is hearty, rich, and substantially malted. This brewery's best offerings are its German renditions, not their American-style stuff, and there's few styles more German than Oktoberfest.
