CO2 growler into a 12oz glass. Foamy head with big floral aroma, lacing delicate, EKG graph circling the glass. Mouth feels very malty and satisfied. Floral oils in complex waves breaking like a gentle surf from tongue to cheek. No hint of the 8.8 ABV. I have drank this beer several times in the past and it is consistently great. The best from Ninkasi. Delightful, cheers! (374 characters)

A: golden ale, clear; coupla fingers of ivory head left laces down the glass

S: chewy biscuit malts drenched with honey, powerful citrus and pine medley, floral and resinous at the same time

T: sweet caramel malts and fresh, chewy grains underscoring a massive hop profile that is both pithy and resinous at the same time - dank, but with bright citric pith-points

M: medium-weight and soft on the tongue, bittering subtly throughout; smooth, great aftertaste

O: worthy of its ratings and rank - delicious and potent, full of bitterness, fresh grain malts and moderate sugars - top-notch DIPA that drinks like s DIPA but without being too heavy or strong. Get some. (669 characters)

"Tricerahops is double of everything you already love in an IPA. More hops, more malt body and a higher gravity define this Double India Pale Ale. Fiercely flavorful, guaranteed to satisfy."

--Tricerahops Double IPA label

Polished kumquat with a handful of swirling yeast that settle into suspension shortly after the pour. Unfiltered (hoppy) beer looks better, smells better and tastes better. The bone white cap tops out at two fingers and more than does its part to add to the attractive appearance. Hopefully, lotsa lace means lotsa hop resins.

Once the foam melts a little, the nose is able to be appreciated. It's pretty good, but it isn't roaring out of the glass. The citric cheesiness brings Cascade to mind. One other variety might be present; it's hard to say for sure.

This Ninkasi offering isn't a rampaging, slavering, ripsnorting, carnivorous beast of a DIPA, but then triceratops were placid plant eaters, weren't they? Yeah, I'm well aware that the beer's name is TriceraHOPS, but with a name like that it should be hoppier. If the brewery is claiming that this DIPA is twice as hoppy as Total Domination IPA, I don't believe it for a second.

The biggest reason it's still above average is that it's closer to a big IPA (as all versions of the style should be) than a barleywine in disguise. In other words, there isn't so much malt that it gunks up the taste buds with sugars. It provides a modest amount of sugar cookie sweetness, then gets the hell out of the way. Trouble is, hops don't exactly rush into the breach.

Candied lemon and grapefruit peel are present, as is a modicum of funky cheesiness that adds another level of flavor interest. The IBUs might be higher here, but this beer doesn't seem as hoppy as Total Domination... which wasn't a hop bomb anyway. Fresh and right out of the keg it just might be killer. Too bad I'll probably never know for sure.

While the mouthfeel is a fraction lighter than the style average, it doesn't deserve to be dinged for it. It has just enough smooth stickiness to be enjoyable, while still allowing one to sip or drink quickly with equal ease. The ABV tastes and feels like a misprint. I'd have guessed at least two percentage points lower.

Tricerahops is a great name for a DIPA. Too bad the beer isn't as spectacular as the name. I'm sure there are those who think the world of it, but from my perspective, if the brewery wants to keep this offering from becoming extinct, they need to use a bigger shovel when adding hops to the kettle. (2,515 characters)

Appearance - This came out a thick and rugged orangish-brown in color with a modest head that left good lacing though.

Smell - The hop aroma has a stale grapefruit aspect that kind of turns me off, and the yeast comes on like a bear here. It has characteristics similar to an English bitter. All in all I like some aspects of the nose, such as how the light malts balance some of the harsher hops, but overall it was clumsy to me.

Taste - The hop flavor came out a bit smoother at the taste but this was still an awkward and somewhat embarrassing effort at the style. I'm a big fan of OR IPAs and DIPAs, but this just lost its way.

Mouthfeel - This is medium-bodied with some light carbonation and a big bitter finish that will surprise a lot of people.

Drinkability - This was not as bad to drink as you'd think from the review. I actually enjoyed some of the flavors but it certainly was not a classic DIPA and most definitely fell short of my expectation of a OR effort. (977 characters)

This beer was not kidding. Its poor graphic design and relatively unknown brewery lead me to believe that i was buying a dud, but something in my heart said push on. to buy... two... Now that i think about it that was probably my childhood (and continuing) love of the triceratops.

Definitely the most bad ass of plant eating dinos, I gave this beer blind hope and was rewarded with a delicious DIPA.

The nose was citrus, grassy pine, fresh bread and a hint of dinosaur blood (probably extracted from an amber bound mosquito. The taste was sweeter/creamier than any west coast IPA i have had since Bear Republic's Apex. Reminded me of a less over the top version of FFF's apocalypse cow. It was extremely balanced and very very delicious. (741 characters)

Poured from a bomber into a pint glass. The foam overtook the top of the glass, settled nicely and I finished the pour.

A - Beautiful perfectly clear dark amber appearance, foamy bronze head that persisted for quite a while.

S - The citricy smell was noticeable as soon as I popped the cap and only got better as I filled the glass. Smelled of grapefruit.

T - More grapefruit - and hops. Lots of hops and more hops.

M - The beer feels very pleasant in the mouth and the aftertaste is very pleasant.

D - The only thing preventing me from having another is the alcohol content.

For a hophead like myself, I feel I have died and gone to Heaven. Ninkasi the goddess would be pleased. (688 characters)

12 oz bottle. Pours slightly hazy orange copper with a medium creamy off white head that retains well and leaves some lacing.

The aroma is sweet bready malts with some floral piney hops.

The flavor is sweet bready malts with big piney, resiny, tarry hops with a harsh bitterness in the aftertaste. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with smooth carbonation.

Overall, a big bitter hop bomb. I remember it being less harsh and more fruity on tap. (454 characters)

Orangy amber in color with little head from the pour. When I swirled heavily in my snifter, a creamy white head developed but dissipated quickly. Aroma is mostly malty, with grapefruit and slight piney notes as well. Grapefruit really comes out in the taste. Grapefruit, pine, some kind of spice (coriander maybe), a bubblegum kind of sweetness, a nice bite from the hops, and something else... I can't quite put my finger on the taste. It's a touch off, but this beer is super fresh. Picked up from the brewery less than two weeks ago. It hides the booziness fairly well. but there is still a fair amount of the 8.8% shining through. The mouthfeel is sticky. This beer sticks to your tongue, cheeks, and lips like thin honey; and lingers on the palate for a good minute after you take each and every sip. From what my buddy Eduardo said about Ninkasi, and what I've read from them, I was really hoping this beer was going to live up to the hype. Good, but no where near great. (977 characters)
