This poured a malty orange amber in color with a thick layer of foam.

There’s a delectable aroma of orange and orange marmalade.

Every time I try this beer I keep thinking of it as being overly boozy, a malty-sweet booziness, that contrasts with the orange-citrus of the hops. At first I enjoyed it, then I didn’t mind, but now I find its finish and flavor profile to be off-putting in a way that makes me not reach for it anymore. Boo.

On tap at Annabelle's bar and bistro in SF

Color could be a bit better (I prefer a more toasted copper)

Nice aroma; perfect balance of malt and hops for an IIPA; in my opinion too many beers in this style are too sweet / not balanced correctly.

Love the mix of citrus/pine in both the nose and taste.

Not my favorite IIPA but it's a welcome choice when it's available

On tap at Malibu Sundownder Tasting Room in Westlake Village, CA.

Pours a hazy orange with a foamy off-white head that settles to a film on top of the beer. A foamy lattice of lace coats the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, citrus fruit, citrus zest, and some onion and garlic herbal hop aromas. Taste is much the same with sweet citrus zest flavors on the finish. There is a medium amount of hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer with a nice citrus forward hop flavor but the hop aromas I am getting are disjointed and muddled.

Served on tap into a shaker glass

A- Poured a dark semi-hazy orange color with off-white ring of head and no lace

S- Some big citrusy hops, big caramel sweetness, some piney notes

T- Lots of juicy citrus notes, piney hops, lots of caramel sweetness. Lots of bitterness on the finish, balancing out a big sweetness from the malt and hop juiciness

M- Very dry, prickly carbonation, medium body, really smooth

O- Really solid DIPA with lots of malt sweetness and hop bitterness. Nice pungent hop character.

On tap at Ninkasi, poured into a pint glass.

A-Pours a burnt orange somewhat hazy, a finger of foamy white head.

S-Smells strongly of hops and sweet resin, some floral and citrus notes.

T-Strong hoppy bitterness, resin sweetness. Taste follows nose as there is also some light citrus and floral notes.

M-Medium to full body, lightly carbonated.

O-Very delicious DIPA, it strikes a good balance of hoppy bitter, sweetness and zest.

This poured a dark orange color with a fluffy white head. Floral, perfumed hops swirl from the glass. This is definitely more on the citrus/crisp side of IPA. It lacks some of the depth I would look for in a double, but is pure & quite representative of the west coast style. Medium mouthfeel & quite clean & fresh on the palate.

Had on tap at Burgundian

A: Pours a clear amber color with one finger off-white head, very nice head retention with sheets of lacing down the glass.

S: Nice piney aroma upfront with some lighter citrus underneath, a bit of grapefruit and orange. A bit of caramel.

T: Nice combination of citrus/pine and caramel malt.

M: Medium bodied with moderate carbonation.

O: Enjoyable, not amazing, but easy drinking with a nice flavor profile.

Imbibed on tap at Harry's Hofbrau on 2/19/12.

Poured a dark gold, clear, metallic and shiny. Great head retention, though not much lacing. Very citrusy hops dominate the nose and not much else. Some malt is discernible though it's very light. Light in mouthfeel, bitter but not too bitter. Very lemony and citrusy. Spritzy and carbonated. Although this is light in taste, the MF is full bodied. It's weird to describe, just trust me. It confuses the palate/mind.

I was confused about this beer, mainly because I wasn't sure if it was full bodied or light. The flavors were very strong, but still not very dominating over the palate. I feel like this should get off the fence and either be a West Coast hop bomb or not. That said, I'd like to try this again on its own. I feel like my palate and expectations were compromised before drinking this beer.

Appearance: dark orange in color with a merangue like thick head that slowly falls to a spotty foam. Thick lace paints the glass.

Smell: loads of pine, grapefruit, and earthy hop presence dominates the aroma.

Taste: big caramel flavor with an great balance of pine, grapefruit, biscuit, pears, and a bold bitterness that does not go over the top like some in the style.

Mouthfeel: medium bodied. Lightly crisp throughout with some dryness late.

Overall: this was a super fresh DIPA that was so well balanced I had to have two in the session. Refreshing and totally satisfying, I returned to the same bar to have it two nights in a row.

This is a pretty solid Imperial IPA, and ranks among the best.

Our group just called Ninkasi and asked what hops they use. Search for "what hops are in tricerahops" or check out the following link:

Poured a hazy orange with a bubbly off white head. The nose is spicy honey with a gentle boozyness. The smell is growing on me as it warms slightly. The taste is orange and a little one dimensional. The mouthfeel is a bit dry and somewhat flat. I would say that this is a good beer but average complexity made it miss the mark a bit.

A nice offering from Ninkasi. A double IPA with sharp hop bitterness on the beginning, smoothed over by rich fruit apricot flavors. The bitterness continues to linger and reminds me of the initial sharpness. I hope this one will stay in my nose for a while to remind me of its hoppy goodness.

Appearance - golden amber color, rich

Smell - fruity and sharp with hops

Taste - sharp bitterness to begin, smooth fruit middle, bitterness linger and linger and linger. :)

Mouthfeel - light carbonation makes this an easy drinker. 8.8% abv says go easy.

Overall - one of my favorites.

On tap, poured into a standard pint glass

Clear amber color with a finger of white head. The foam recedes slowly leaving excellent lacing. Smells of sweet malt and citrus hops. Nice. Taste starts out bitter but is quickly balanced by a sweet malt backbone. Orange, tangerine, and mango are prominent. Not much in the way of pine. Finish is lingering bitterness. Mouthfeel is thick and syrupy with a medium level of carbonation, which works well here. ABV is well masked by the balanced, smooth character of this offering from Ninkasi. Overall a nice iteration of my favorite style.

I have been seeing Ninkasi beer showing up in the stores lately and decided to give one a try since I found it on tap. Nice clear amber beer with a adequate off white head that laced the glass well. Not very pungent, but hops could be detected. I liked the citrus grapefruit sweetness. A fresh, clean tasting beer. I've had so many great imperial IPAs lately, this was a good one, but didn't really stand out.

On tap at Gourmet Haus Staudt.

Amber colored with a hazy, unfiltered body. The head is lasting and sticky, slightly off-white.

The nose is signature Pacific Northwest IPA, an even mix of bready, slightly caramelized malt and citrusy, grapefruit and orange hoppiness. There's a touch of tropical fruit as well.

It's bready and bitter on the tongue, medium bodied, quite flavorful. Grapefruit and pine hop flavors are prominent, but there's an undertone of tropical fruit. The finish is resiny, grapefruit-like, mildly astringent. Pretty solid stuff, but by no means great.

Had this on tap at Henry's Taproom in Portland. Pours a dark orange colour with about a finger of head. Some mild lacing down the side of the glass. Smells of strong citrus hops with some oily pine hops creeping in as well. Lots of caramel malt backbone too. Flavour is fairly bitter, though the sweetness balances this off pretty well. Nice carbonation level. I wasn't impressed with the Total Domination bottle I had, but this one was nice.

Appearance is a clear copper-goldish, light carbonation (a tad lighter than typical for the style), served with little to no head.

Not much head retention, near to no lacing.

Flavor is certainly not bad, but I did not rate high seeing as they market this as a "double IPA" and therefore I expect much; this came in at a normal IPA range for IBU's and gravity, at least taste and mouthfeel wise.

Aroma is certainly this guy's thing; much dry hopping for great complexity and inviting sniffs.

Not so drinkable, this is one that wares on you half way through and you are looking towards the next beer in a more favorable genre; could definitely use a better balance of malt.

On tap at monks kettle.

A- pours a light amber color. Strong head formation at 2-3mm. Well retained. Very clear, little carbonation and zero hazing.

s- orange and fruity hop notes, but a bit light by dipa standards. Overall a very light and not direct beer.

t- starts off light and sweet, some caramel and crystal malts. Some bitterness builds, but still malt forward. finishes with a smooth orange and grapefruit note. A very unassuming beer from a taste. Very smooth.

M- smooth beer hides the abv. Not an overwhelming flavor or palette fatigue. Nothing offensive.

Nothing spectacular but certainly a solid beer.

This is easily my favorite IPA i have ever had. First off its a double, which is awesome in itself. The great thing about it is that i couldnt taste any of the bitter taste you can get with a double, and the beer drank so smooth i just wanted to down it all at once. A couple of these and i was feeling really good so i would recommend this to everyone even if you do not like to drink IPA. I had a couple friends with me and they all agreed is was very good and easy to drink and they are not big into IPA or even dark beers.

Served in a straight pint glass. The keg blew as my beer was being poured so this probably affects the aroma and taste components. Poured a clear amber/yellow with a thick, white head that had lots of very sticky lacing.

The scent was very hoppy, mostly aromatic, with some floral notes. The most noticeable flavors were citrus with some pine on the finish. This was not a bitter ImpIPA, as the floral flavors were strongest.

The body was on the thin side, even for a west coast hop bomb. This a very drinkable ImpIPA, but the tongue would get fatigued after more than a few.

When I see this again, I'll try it again and if my opinions change, I'll re-review.

Hazy copper orange with a big rocky head. Lacing grabs onto the sides of my glass and won't let go, even when I try to soak them away while drinking.

Incredibly piney and grapefruit citrus. A tad one-dimensional, but it is oh-so-good, as far as IIPA's go.

Alcohol pokes through, almost like rum or other liquor. SLight tart apple comes up with the minimal carbonation. Double IPA's don't really have much carbonation, not really expecting it, but there's a nice balance in this one.

This 9.6% hop fest is a masterpiece of brewing. It pours light amber in color with a small cap of dense foam. The aroma is huge with orange hops and just a hint of malt sweetness. The flavors is also big on the orange hop profile but the malt brings in some chewy caramel without being overly sweet. The mouthfeel is smooth and has a medium body. This is one of my favorite double/Imperial IPAs.
