A delicious oatmeal stout with just enough hops to balance the copious quantities of dark roasted malts, oatmeal for a creamy smooth drinkability, and whole vanilla beans for a rich complexity. To achieve this higher level of decadence, we added in whole vanilla beans to the final stage of fermentation - the same process we use to dry hop a beer.

Poured dark hazy brown with a nice fluffy tan head. Smell was heavy of vanilla and chocolate sauce. The vanilla is even more vanilla ice cream and bittersweet chocolate with a dry bitter roasty chocolate finish. Too heavy handed on the vanilla where it would have been better as an accent. A nice dry bitter chocolate finish cleans off some of the sweetness. Overall I wasn't a huge fan of this. There was far too much vanilla for my taste. I get that they were trying to differentiate from the regular oatis, but the regular Oatis is very good and difficult to improve upon with these unnecessary additions.

Opaque when held to sunlight. Deep chocolate brown in the glass, like a stout should be. Malty without a whole lot of yeast aroma on the nose, which is OK by me. I drink beer, not bread. Everything about the flavor and feel is subtle, nothing is overpowering. You sense the impact of the vanilla more than you actually taste it. The hoppiness expected of the 50 IBUs isn't prevalent, the malty characteristics you'd expect of a stout are subdued, and the vanilla tones are almost imperceptible. Yet everything works extremely well. This stout is much more than the sum of its parts. Would make an excellent secret Santa gift (receiving, not giving).

1 Pint 6 ounce bottle poured to wine glass
Sight: Black, reddish when viewed against the light medium brown foam that slowly disappears, some lacing
Smell: fragrant,
Taste: bitterness comes out, some sweetness
Feel: lively carbonation, very good follow through /finish, long bitter aftertaste
Overall: very good beer, can be repeat, but not something to look forward to

A- This pours with a beautiful caramel colored head that starts about three fingers thick and slowly settles down into a very puffy froth....it remains a solid 1.5 fingers and develops dimples on top. The brew itself is a dense dark brown, almost black color and has little to no clarity, which also makes seeing what the carbonation is like a mute point. The lacing is actually modest at best, as really, most of the thick foam stays with the liquid and only a small fraction clings to the side of my glass....it leaves an oily brownish presence instead. Overall I like the looks of this one!
S- There is an overall sweetness about it, and I do detect soft subtle hints of fresh vanilla bean. Of course, there are notes of both dark and milk chocolate, mocha, hazelnuts and almonds, toasty chocolate and/or black malt dryness and/or bitterness on the finish, and a lingering dry oat flake quality.
T- Ahhh....this tastes like a stout should! Right away I need to note that this is a dry stout and the bitterness really hits the top and back of the palate....bitter chocolate, cocoa, espresso and heavily toasted/burnt malts all have a place in this area. Once the first couple of sips have been had, softer notes of cream, vanilla, nuts, cooked molasses and caramel malts show up, helping to round things out. The finish has notable hop bitterness that is fresh and somewhat palate cleansing. A very nice tasting Stout!
M/O- The carbonation is creamy and tight, allowing the medium-full bodied texture to wrap its way around the palate. For a 7% alcohol beer, it is well hidden and rather drinkable.....I would have no problems enjoying more than one pint of this in a sitting. I think this would be a suitable stout to enjoy with any sort of chocolate based dessert, and could very well work too with a saucy/savory meat dish as a main.....it does fine on its own, as I am having at the moment. A nice find and I will purchase again....I recommend this for anyone who wants to have a reasonably good traditional type stout with just a moderate sweetness.
