From a 650mL bomber as part of the Ninkasi 4-pack - which was a pretty fantastic marketing package and included a "soundtrack" music download. The music download was meh to me but the beers were better. All four were hop-forward beers, which is definitely Ninkasi's forte.

Nose: I found this one surprisingly closed. It's 6.8% ABV and 72 IBU so it's not exactly a mild beer, but there isn't that bouquet of flowers, or bowl of citrus, or forest of pine that you often get with a big IPA. It's often one of my favourite things about IPA's. So this was a little bit of a disappointment, but really just means you have to get in closer to get a good sense of what's going on. Resiny, oily, some pine and some citrus.

Taste: Things open up as soon as a sip is taken, though. Big citrus - grapefruit and lemon zest. Floral as well, and a bit of pine especially towards the end. The lemon and grapefruit have a sweetness to them in that citrusy way. Very bright flavour overall.

I was pretty happy with this. I prefer it considerably over Total Domination.

Poured from a 650ml bottle. Pours a bright yellow-orange colour. The nose has all the classic West Coast IPA notes: grapefruit, cannabis/resin, grass, pine. Super inviting. The taste is good and bitter with a little bit of fruity sweetness. Ninkasi calls this a "specialty ale," but it definitely drinks like an IPA.

Quite a blonde colour for an IPA but the 6.8% ABV stop it from being a ISA. The beer has a quite a fruity note to the hops which work well with the lighter look. I had no problem finishing the bottle off and give it high marks for drink-ability. A fair amount of complexity in this beer , enough to make it worth buying again.

Light amber and clear. Summer IPA.

The taste is sweet citrus fruits; grapefruit, lemons. Crisp grains carry the beer. Not overly malty. Tropical smell. Grassy and piney citric bitterness and long aftertaste. The mouthfeel is medium bodied, with a prickly and sharpness but still creamy. Enough complex flavors and aromas to carry the beer and keep you sipping. No alcohol bite due the complexity of all going on.

chewy piney simcoe and chinook hop flavors. I don't understand why it's not hoppy enough for some tasters, but mine was fresh from the brewery on tap.

The Maiden the Shade came in a 22oz four pack at Costco. It poured a lager like straw color with a thin 1 finger foam head with tight bubbles. Good malt smell to this one with a citrus pineapple aroma. It was a great taste and well balanced as I got a biscuity malt hitting the palate followed by a soft enveloping bitterness that hit the top of the mouth and tip of the tongue. I hope to buy this again in the future.
