On tap at Bittercreek a couple of times recently... tannish almost yellow 2 finger head rises quickly and dies back pretty fast too... the brew is hazy orange amber.

Nose shows strong maltiness without the sweetness... a bit of orange (juice not zest)... toasty malt.... EtOH is definitely present, but is drowned out a bit by the thick malt profile.

Toasty bread with a definite orange note... flavor is a little lackluster... not enough hoppiness to battle the thick malt flavor.... again, not sweet, just a big malt flavor component... almost like a toasted biscuit with a smear of orange jam..

Body is thick... coating... little carbonation doesn't help...

Only okay... unlike most wheatwines... could use more hops/bitterness and lesser body...

On tap at manito tap house.

Gold with a creeping rim of fine whites. Smells of apples, phenols, vanilla and marshmallow cream. Taste is apples, alcohol, sweet wheat, and hints of well, more apples. Obese bodied with light Carb. I wouldn't call this good.

Pint glass.

A- Deep mahogany hue. Rich-color and just a bit translucent. Looks appetizing.

S- Smell not particularly strong. Smelled citrusy, almost like a light wheat ale rather than wheat wine. Sweetness abound.

T- Lots of honey and sweet malts. Some grapefruit hoppy tastes liven up red berry jam smeared on soft wheat bread. This is a very sweet beer that is balanced wonderfully with hops.

M- Too thick. Honey straight out of the jar. A little bit of carbonation feels great coming in but as it goes down a syrupy coating is left behind in the mouth.

O- This isn't what I expected from Ninkasi's wheat wine. It's better. Perhaps too flavorful to be paired with food. I feel like I might not appreciate the subtleties of the taste less if I were eating. Try this but leave your expectations first and just enjoy.

Served in 12oz tulip. Poured a semi-hazy dark honey gold color, notably darker than most of the style I've had, with about 3/4 inch of just off-white head that had very good retention and lacing.

The aroma had a couple features I couldn't place, maybe tobacco or spice. The base was sweet and had some nice grain scents. The aroma was good, I'm just having a hard time grasping and describing what the descriptors are. On the tongue, it was the same story, nice base grains that were pleasingly earthy, a bit of sweetness that I usually don't get in the style, and that unusual feature that I can't get a grip on.

The body was much fuller than typical, a bit sticky across the tongue and with a very sticky finish. Drinkability was good, for a big beer, and if you can get a grip on that different aspect, it could be very good. Overall, an interesting take on the style. A must try if you see it.

Edit 2/22/13: This was the same batch and the changes are noticeable. The spice/tobacco notes from above aren't there any more. The beer was still a bit sweeter than I prefer from the style, and the beer has smoothed out nicely. Worth trying if you see it.

On tap in the tasting room at Ninkasi on 5/12/12.

A: clear and orange, almost like orange kool-aid. A cap of slightly off white foam with a nice sized ring around the glass. Streams of tiny bubbles come from every little nucleation site on the glass.

S: Grainy and a touch musty, expected from a wheat beer but amplified by the amount of wheat in this bad boy. The hops are just slightly present, enough to let you know this is a beer not just fermented wheat.

T: very wheaty and the hops makes a much bigger splash than on the nose. Alcohol burn is very present, expected from a 9% abv.

M: Medium bodied and really smooth. Makes a good warm weather sipping beer.

O: gaze, jot, sniff, jot, sip, swig, jot, sip, jot, "okay review written" chug! I regret not getting a pint, I really enjoyed this beer. Well rounded and very tasty.
