Unicum Verum IPA was first brewed in the mid 90's. In 2006, it was brewed once again to celebrate the brewery's 10th anniversary, now under the label Unicum Verum Jubileum.

Brewed using yeast from a bottle of XX Bitter.

Courtesy of a Swedish friend with whom I worked at the BSF bar, GBBF 2008 in London. This bottle is at 7%abv. only, and is called Unicum Verum "Jubileum", rather than "IPA". I guess the details for this entry could be missed up. BB 31/08/2009, served chilled in a tulip-shaped wine glass.

A: pours translucent, dark amber hue with a light reddish edge, the carbonation is lively but very fine and constant, supporting a huge and silky fine white froth with great retention.
S: surprisingly light for a Belgian ale, showing sweet pears, ripe tangerine, overripe white grapes as well as a touch of aromatic red apples in terms of fruit-esters, while a lightly spicy, woody-zesty (as in many drier Belgian blond ale) hint also lingers in the background, but it does dissipate slowly. Pleasantly yeasty and hoppy, leaving the lightly caramely amber malts lurking quietly in the background. Overall, the Goldings' orangey citrusness and sweet pears seem to be quite pronounced, in a sense also reminiscent of a strong English ale on cask.
T: the mixed fruity (citric-zesty and pear-ish mainly) foretaste rests on a very focused and lubricating candyish-malt base with a touch of phenol, then leading towards a quietly intensifying yeasty aftertaste full of licorice and white-peppery aromatic spices as well as a pronounced, tangy and tannic hop-bitter finish; only in the very end, a wee bit of alc. reveals itself at the back of the palate.
M&D: superbly soothing and soft on the carbonation, medium-bodied, surprisingly drinkable... All in all, this is a well-crafted ale, no matter which style it purports to be! (It's very mixed, honestly.)

Bottled as Unicum Verum Jubileum. Pours a light orange color with a nice white foamy head. Smell is pretty nice, malty with notes of mandarines, orange, but also som alcohol (which maybe isn't that positive). Taste is sweet, malty with some orange notes and quite nice bitterness. Mouthfeel is quite filling, but overall I think this beer seems a bit "unbalanced" and almost demanding to drink... even though I shared it with a friend. One of the bigger dissapointments this year.

The colour is orange-yellow, the liquid clear. The small fuzzy foam sinks down to a fine ½ finger yellowish head. No lacing. The beer is bottle conditioned.

The smell is sweet and fruity (dried apricots, matured apples) with notes of honey, yeast and some spices. All required flavours are in there, although quite weak.

The taste is fresher and hoppier than I remember from other examples of this style: Some sour notes, lots of sweet apricots and sweet almonds. Hints of tobacco (not smoke), flowery flavours, light notes of yeast and green apples. The aftertaste brings some alcohol as well as a dry medium bitter flavour of wheat flour, minerals, dried fruits and lemon zest.

The carbonation is strong; lots of very small bubbles. The liquid is a little sticky and smooth.

This beer was cleaner, bitterer and more drinkable than I had expected. The best I have had from Sigtuna so far. A Swedish Duvel?

Bottle@home, shared with my old man.

A: Golden colored with a generous head.

S: Honey, Citric Notes, Banana Marsmallow, Fruit.

T: Tobaco, Caramel, Citric notes, Apricot, Bread, Perfume.

M: Complex and very interesting. High carbonation.

Best beer from this brewery without a doubt. Very different and hard to define but still very good. Highly recommended!
