I was driving through on business and called for directions. It was easy to find off the highway, and placed off the main drag. It was the middle of the afternoon, so there were very few people there. It has a English Pub feel, with a decidely PA small village vibe. I was promptly greeted and had a beer in hand within 2 minutes of arriving. I was glad to see they had a double cooler full of exotic beers that could keep a man busy if he lived in town. However, my trip could only afford a couple of beers before I needed to be on my way.

First, I had the IPA which was more floral then bitter...but was a good example of the style and I would reccomend it. I was also impressed that they had a beer engine that was currently pouring a Brown Ale. While pouring the beer the bartender told me the story of why they called in Bessie Brown. Apparently, she was the local prostitute that was in business for decades just a stones throw away from the establishment. She also took the time to pour about 20 oz down the drain as she noted I was the first of the day to order from the beer engine. I appreciated the extra effort! I was happy to hear the history, loved the extra effort, and REALLY enjoyed the brown ale. It was a great session beer!

I could not stay for food, but the menu looked good judging from the good mix of Engligh Pub fare and "normal" pub fare. I would reccomend anyone hitting this place up if they are in the area. It had a great vibe and I could see myself making it a regular spot if I lived in the area.

Easily walkable from Molly Pitcher. Split in two, restaurant on one side, bar on the other. Bar does have an English pub vibe, long bar. Only three of their own beers on, but the rest of the tap and bottle list is impressive.

It was unfortunately a funeral that brought me to the Market Cross Pub, but beyond that everything was great. The day after my wife and I stopped by before leaving town as we'd have quite a drive ahead of us.

It's a fairly small place, and it seemed a little dark and dingy on a cold and rainy day, but the small bar (I think it seats about 10) was comfortable and there were plenty of people in the dining room for lunch on a weekday. The wood floor is nice, as is the bar and the back bar, but the drop ceiling leaves a little to be desired. That's OK, it's cozy.

It's got an English Pub feel, and the menu follows. I had a shepherd's pie, made with lamb, but you can also get a cottage pie with beef. My wife had the fish and chips. Everything was good but not great, although I should also point out that I have had worse in England! They also do a lot of other stuff which explains a lot: nachos, mozzarella sticks, wings, cheesesteak, chicken tenders, reuben, B.L.T., and pasta alfredo. There are some more interesting items but I want to convey to you the idea that this is not a Gordon Ramsay restaurant, it's a pub in Carlisle, PA, and the customers really drive the ship. I thought the service was very good, and found the prices reasonable for the quality.

The house-brewed beers were similar, good but not great, although I certainly enjoyed them. There were 5 house beers on tap inlcuding a Belgian-style blonde, and and imperial red so they're definitely not keeping up entirely with the English pub theme, but they also had a bitter and a porter (or stout?) so there's that. Beyond that they have a whole lot of other beers available on tap and in bottle but I didn't really pay much attention to them as it didn't seem there was anything really unique to be had.

There are several other breweries in town but I'd still say stop in and try at least one beer.

Visited in the fall of 2021. First time we parallel parked our rig, sort of. Love the atmosphere of this place. We sat outside because we had our dog. The service was amazing, very accommodating to our pooch. The food was very good. They only have 5 house beers and several other guest taps. But their selection of cans and bottles is amazing.

Got a recommendation from local hotel registration desk to eat here, and he told me to show my room key for additional 10% discount. Drove into town, and after finding some street parking headed into this dark British styled pub. Sat at a table since the bar was packed with a bunch of locals who seemed to be enjoying themselves. Plenty of TVS and some decent rock music playing too.

There were 5 house beers and 12 guests beers on draft. The house beers were OK, as I had the Lionheart Lager, Blue Mountain Maibock, and Ole Nessie Scotch Ale. The food was surprisingly good and so was dessert. Service was really on top of things despite the large crowd.

This was a hidden gem in the area and definitely worthy for a great meal and some beers.

I stopped in here on a recent visit to Carlisle on a Monday evening, and was happy that it was open, as half of this town is closed on Mondays. I arrived around 8:30 and there was a pretty good crowd on hand. There seemed to be a trivia game going on. The place had a British pub vibe to it, a bit cluttered and somewhat high levels of noise. There were 5 house brews on tap, and a couple of dozen other craft beers, as well as many cans and bottles. Service was pretty good, the fish and chips were damn tasty, and prices not to bad. Overall, if I'm in Carlisle again, I'll likely be stopping in.

Full disclosure, this pub is in my hometown. But I'm greatful this jem is here. Laid back atmosphere, about twenty rotating beers on tap, including decent home made brews, plus huge bottle selection from all over the world. Annual round the world booklet. I would recommend for drinks or casual dinner. Traditional pub food, my favorite is Duke of Devonshire (sliced turkey with brie on french baguette). Several TVs with sports, live music, trivia night, there is always something going on. Can get crowded at times. Check out this Carlisle landmark.

Went here for a belated birthday late lunch/early dinner with the family and a good friend. They have a huge selection of beers on tap, ciders, quite a few of their own and a rotating cask beer every month. I had their Dublin Your Luck Irish Dry Stout on cask which was very well made.
There was only one waitress on duty and she was pretty busy.
The food was good and once we placed our orders it didn't take too long for it to come out. My friend and I wanted to hang out at the bar and have a few more of the brewpubs own beers, but time did not allow for that.
Typical bar food and decent prices; a lot of sandwiches and a fairly large entree menu as well.
Definitely going back when we have more time. Carlisle is also a great town to walk around and check out the stores and shops.

Located on the main drag down the middle of Carlisle. Pretty easy to find and on-street parking was plentiful on our Friday night visit.

Multi-room setup with decent sized bar area. Disappointed in the number of house beers (2), but had quite a few guest taps going.

Food was a little lower in quality than anticipated. Good soup, but my wife's salad was disappointing. In all fairness, though, probably not the place to worry about a salad. Food came out quick and was appropriate for the price.

Service was attentive and cheerful. Can't ask for too much more.

Overall, glad we stopped and would probably go again if in the area.

Great place to grab a bite and brew. Really good bottle list. They used to have pint night every other tuesday where you bought the pint and kept the glass. If you plan on visiting more than once start a beer passport. You have to drink a set amount of beers usually around 100 over the course of the year. They break up their whole bottle list by country and you try to drink one per country. Great place to try a bunch of different stuff. The food was always really good normal pub fare. The crab dip is to die for! The prices always seem very reasonable. I would suggest this place to anyone traveling through the area.

This a nice spot for Carlisle. You walk in and it is dark with lots old world style charm. Lots dark wood and long bar on the right. It is kinda tight inside. They brew some of there own beer which is cool and decent. The bottles list is very good. They have a large variety and showcase lots of pa beers . I did not try any food, so I can not comment on that. One thing I did not like was the cramped factor. This came into play when folks came in for sixers. All of the bottles are stored up front and behind the bar. There is a large window right by the bottles. I would hate to see all those nice bottles be sun burned. Overall cool place

This place is much bigger inside than I would have guessed from the outside. Low lighting and lots of "clutter" on the walls make for a homey atmosphere. It was crowded for a thursday and it seemed like a very happy bunch of laocals. if I lived nearby I believe I would be here often.

The menu was a lot of standard pub offerings with other entree options. I was craving a burger though and the fried onion and Stilton burger hit the spot. They only had two of their own beers on, but the maibock I had was very good. They supplement their own brew with a few local offering plus BMC on-tap and a very extensive bottle selection. I only glanced at the bottle list, but the prices struck me as being lower than I've seen elsewhere. Our server was friendly and attentive. Overall I really don't have anything bad to say about this place. I'm very much looking forward to a return visit.

This place is nestled among the shop fronts on a picturesque street in Carlisle, & is unassuming enough that you might pass it by (as I almost did). Once inside, I was hit immediately with the the dim, brown, cozy Anglo atmosphere that just feels so homey inside, despite it being a bright, clear afternoon outside. Not a big place, & close enough that you can overhear others' conversations. Nice, neighborly vibe - the only minus here was the TV, which I'd like to see eliminated from pubs.

I was a little bummed to hear that they only had one house beer on tap - apparently it was a busy weekend - but the porter was good stuff, with a very British character to it, toffee, a little mineral, & nice & roasty. They've got a solid tap line-up, if not necessarily huge. Plenty of tasty bottles to be found, as well. And the imperial pint is a welcome sight, to be sure.

Nice menu, with plenty of British pub & dinner fare. Loved seeing several dishes with crab, which I can't resist. The tomato basil bisque was great. There were a few other entrees I'd be interested to try over future visits. The side of chips (by which I mean American potato chips) was a little lacking, but whatever - he open-faced crab & swiss sandwich more than made up for it.

Our server was nice enough. Prices are decent, the non-house beer was maybe a little on the pricy side, but I had to remember I was paying for a little more volume, too, so no big deal.

Definitely a place I'd stop again, as I'd love to try more of the house selection. I've heard it gets pretty crowded on weekend nights, which sounds both fun & maddening. The goal here reminds me of The Old Toad in Rochester - a pub with an old world character that's all about beer & community.

I spent much of my undergraduate career at the Market Cross Pub located in downtown Carlisle, PA. The Pub features typical pub food and the largest beer selection in the area.

There are about a dozen taps and they usually reserved for pretty basic brews (Yuengling, Guinness, Harp). There is usually one beer on cask as well. Market Cross also brews a few of their own house brewed beers on tap.

The strength of the Market Cross's beer selection is their extensive bottle list which features around 170 different selections. The beer menus is broken down in sections. The international section features beers from Argentina to Vietnam and many stops in between (with Belgium, the UK, and Germany comprimising the largest group). The Pub also features many Pennsylvania breweries (Sly Fox, Troegs, Victory, Weyerbacher and the nearby Appalachian Brewing Company). The rest of the beer menu isn't going to blow anyone away (Bell's, Dogfish Head, Stone, Ommegang, etc.) but it is definitely the best selection in town.

The food is standard but good. Sandwiches and pub favorites such as shephard's pie and fish and chips dominate the menu.

Service is also friendly, but often hurried particulary during big weekend at the nearby college.

All in all, the Market Cross pub is a solid beer lovers destination in central Pennsylvania. I stop in for a meal and a pint every time through Carlisle. You should too.

Our love affair with this place began a long time ago. And now that we live in DE we always make it a point to stop in anytime we are back in town. My husband did the world beer tour in 2004 and we had our wedding rehersal dinner in King Arthur's Court in 2005. The atmosphere is typical of a pub with dim lights and the normal pub decor. we find this a great place to go relax and put back a few pints, either just the 2 of us, or with a group of friends. The food has always been good, a mix of pub-grub and english fare. There is always something good to eat and drink at this place. The wait staff and bartenders are kind and attentive. Even though we are from "out of town" they don't forget where we came from and treat us like locals.

Way, way, like absurdly western Maryland; damn panhandle. This, the 2nd week of 6 to 8 to surely become more weeks, months, I don't know what but I know what. A whole lot of time on the road (again), but it lets me sampler and din in as I pass through and fro and sometimes the long way around. Breaks up the ride some but I seem to lose the day...

Meanwhile in collegetown Carlisle, on the strip of look left & right again, did I pass it? Oh, no, wait, there, okay. Oooh, it's a doublewide, fancy; 2 storefronts side by side connected to the rear. Took a minute for my eyes to adjust and fell seated to the bar; wood with a black laminate top and a lip, straight, seating about 14 the length. Taps everywhere, nearly a dozen and a half in all. A tower of 10 on the bar, a pair of towers of 2 each along side, and then 3 single handles on the barback fed by ½ barrels and sixtels just sitting there below, not really so sightly. They oughts to expand the lot up front and remove the ones from behind the bar. Also, a lone handpump on my end sometimes in use.

And the barback is otherwise a hornet's nest of clutter; stacked glassware, sampling glass racks, ½ yard glasses, growlers, a tap board list, little corner shelves w/figurines, a bobby hat, glasses, flags, steins, copper mugs, signage, bar towels, and random & new arrival bottles displayed on the end for all to see. They've got beer bongs tucked in there with the ½ yard glasses; they're somewhat hidden but not well enough; someone might spot one and want to use it. Guest pint glasses line the trim above the bar. Drop spots & large white Xmas lighting, with smaller holiday lighting strung wrapped around sprawling viney bramble. Rack of glass mugs above the bar for ease of grab. TV's in the corners and a large flatscreen to the rear. White walls over wood slat lowers mirrored, brick red tile floorings, low black drop ceilings with fans o' spin. Large windows up front with the blinds drawn, this place is very low lit. Framed awards, pics of Army school, lots of brewery signage, mirrors, pieces, prints, pics, and lengths of tap handles displayed here and there.

4 step up shorty booths adjacent to the bar, 9 tables in a room to the rear. Slight space in the front of the rear for a band set up tonight, some older folks doing some older music, they were quite good. 18 tables in the side room and a banquet room to the rear there. Wandered down the hallway, turned and turned again. Heard tunes and went out the back door and found a small detached brewery in a garage space there, with a 10 barrel system. Spoke to the guy. "Often", he said, "I'll have as many as 4 beers up", just not now.

First time up, I sampled the 2 house beers on. Mid Summer Knights Wheat, an American Wheat, but served with a lemon anyway, kind of meh, and in a Weisse glass so a whole lot of meh, and the Market Cross Red, described as a mix of English & American Amber & Pale Ale, some light maltiness. A month later's return finds more beers up. The Pub Porter, some chocolatey malt presence, some roastiness; Bessie's Brown Ale, I'm going to say Englishy Brown, not the malt bomb I was hoping for. And on revisit revisited, now the addition of the cask IPA, which I'm drinking, a good citrusy hoppiness, excellent on cask. And then again, finally, the Impy Stout which was thinnish and just okay. The Porter & IPA were the best of the lot.

And always more than a dozen guest taps, a mix of good micros and mostly blah imports. And did I mention the bottled selections housed in a 3 door glass cooler up front? 6 dozen+ micros, roughly ½ of them from PA; another 90 imports, more than ½ of which are Belgian (including a $10 lovely Orval), UK & German, leaving the other 3 dozen or so to beers of the world (I feel well traveled just looking at the list); and a dozen and a half macros, maltos, ciders and N/A's. Probs upwards of 200 bottled selections in all. We seem to find ourselves drinking the bottled selections and not the house beers; Dan having found the Speed Racer 5 IPA, Werfel fixin' in on the DogFishHead Indian Brown and me, well, I jump around a bit.

Ordered a chicken & sausage tortilla soup and a grilled chicken sandwich done Cajun, sans the cheese (did the Provolone leave alone) and with fries, please. Soup was good and the sandwich solid. Over the last 3 months, I've 'etten here 3 or 4 more times. Usually I revisit that Cajun chicky but I've also had the chicken pot pie, big flaky puff pastry madness, and the carib jerk wings = good. Sometimes a salad, sometimes not. Food has been good every time.

English pubby, I'd say. Service was a bit harried but not bad. Food was good but the beers were mostly just adequate. There ain't a hell of a range, and there are a lot of people drinking things that aren't them, but with so many guest taps and the big bottled list, it's no wonder. Still a comfortable enough place for a bite and a beer when through to wherever elsewhere.

I stopped in the Market Cross Pub and Brewery for dinner and drinks on a Friday evening after a long work day. Two house made beers were listed on their website as currently pouring:

Tell Me Rye Golden Ale (5.0%) - American Rye / Blonde Ale. Hops (according to the menu): Perle, Liberty, & Hallertau. Grain bill: Pilsner & Crystal malts, flaked rye and red wheat. Sounded good but I was sorely disappointed that they had run out.

Market Cross Red (5.2%) - An American / English pale ale with a thick creamy head on a bright copper base. Medium bodied, smooth and incredibly drinkable. This beer just evaporated from my glass and was the only beer I drank that evening despite the enticing selection of drafts and bottles:

On draught: Bass, Newcastle, Troeg's Sunshine Pilsner, Guinness, Harp, Boddingtons, Belhaven, Yuengling Lager & Bock, Lindeman's Frambois, Victory Festbier, SN Harvest, Stoudt's Hefeweizen, DFH 60 Minute, Young's Double Chocolate Stout, Sly Fox Pikeland Pils and Blue Moon.

I liked that the bottle selection had a good selection of PA micros to include selections from Allegheny Brewing, Lancaster, Sly Fox, Stoudts, Troegs, Victory and Weyerbacher. Other American micros included Stone, Rogue, Brooklyn, Boulder, Bear Republic, DFH, Bell's and a few others.

Classic 60's & 70's rock radio played prominently at the comfortable bar seating and a small band started setting up just before I left. This is a moderately sized Carlisle establishment with booth seating across from the bar and plentiful seating for dining in the back and adjoining room. On the surface, there's little to indicate that this a brewpub other than the line of tap handles and single hand pump. This American version of an English pub was quite busy on a Friday night and is probably THE beer destination in Carlisle.

The food menu offers all the standard fare (soup, salad, sandwiches, apps. and entrees) along with a few English pub favorites. I ordered the seared sea bass off the weekend specials menu, which was good, but not all that flavorful.

Brew System (10 BBL) - English system with hot liquor back, gas-fired kettle, hop percolator, open fermentors and closed "Grundy" tanks.

The Market Cross Pub and Brewery is certainly worth a stop if staying in the area or visiting nearby Hershey park.

For about 3 years this was a regular place to stop at least once or twice a year. Now that that has changed I realized on a recent visit that I'd not reviewed it and figured I'd better file this one as I don't know when I'll make it back.

The atmosphere is a mixture of pub and restaurant and brew pub. Its a nice place to visit and I found that it is also very popular with some faculty and students from Dickinson college. But its not one of those places where students go get wasted. They go there for socializing and the good beer and food.

The bottled beer selection is acceptably large and offers the craft beer drinker many choices. There is also fresh beer brewed on the premises and over several visits I never tried one I didn't like. (For a current list, see their web site.)

While the service has occasionally been spotty there was also usually a very large crowd when we had long waits.

The food is modeled at least in part after English pub food and if memory serves is reasonably authentic. More than once I've had the Shepherd's pie and enjoyed the flavors I'd grown used to from trips to the UK. It is definitely *not* standard brewpub fare. Going there for the food would be just fine even if there were no beer available.

The range of menu items offers a reasonably wide selection so that diners with different tastes will usually find something they care to eat.

I like visiting Market Cross and am looking forward to another chance for dinner and beer there.
