This place is a godsend for the beer lover. The Brewers Den is a warehouse in the light industrial area of Mona Vale, on Sydney's Northern Beaches. Walk in, and see big barrels of LME, fridge full of hop pellets & specialty grains & adjuncts, a half a dozen boilers, and a big, big cool room.
They are cheap.... very cheap. This is because of certain legal loopholes, whereby the client gets his hands dirty with some part of the process, and it becomes "homebrew".... so certain excises are avoided.
So, you show up, choose from over 100 different recipes (some based on commercial brands, some original), collect the malt, and hand it over. That's it.
Come back in two weeks, and bottle.
And bottling is fun. They give you a glass, so you can taste your cold, carbonated beer straight out of the fermentor (it goes through a carbonating device just prior to bottling).
There are some minor drawbacks, however. This is extract brewing. There is no mashing, full or partial. The hops are pelleted, and I believe only two strains of yeast are used. This can be a challenge when their range includes styles that are very dependent upon certain yeast characteristics.
But....when you are paying $200AU for 6 cartons of Old Particular (a clone, of course), this is not a significant drawback.
The guys are friendly, and often have a BBQ going on Saturday mornings.
Great value, great range, great service.... great beer.
