I poured this into a thistle. The appearance was a ruddy brown color with a one finger white foamy head that simmers down to a nice level coating over top of the body. There is some decent lacing clinging finely to the sides of the glass. The smell, holy caramel malty scotch, wow. This could be overbearing to some, but not too bad to me. Its just not that well balanced. The taste is super sweet through the caramel malts. There is a long caramel aftertaste leading into a dry caramel finish. On the palate, it sat about a light to medium on the body with a pretty good sessionable aspect to it. The carbonation is barely there - its almost too smooth and creamy to be true. Overall, not a bad scotch ale, but does need a bit more "peaty-ness" to show me that it could be a great Scotch ale.

Pours red and bubbly with a dense but dissipating head. Has a sweet nose to it. Has a sweet taste as well. Almost barrel aged taste but not quite. Does not leave lacing in a glass.

Deep dark amber color. Short lasting head. Heavy malt sweetness dominates the aroma. Caramel flavor without a whole lot of sweetness. Fairly thick, but I wouldn't mind more. Pretty good, but I've had better.

I poured this into a pint glass.
The appearance was a hazy brown color with a one finger white foamy head that dissipated within about a minute leaving some light lacing running around the glass in some rings after the head died off a bit.
The smell had a nutty to slightly creamy cocoa backed up by a decent smoky smooth peat - like quality about it.
The taste was mainly sweet and smoky.
The mouthfeel was extremely smooth and pretty creamy as it rolled over my tongue.
Overall, I thought this was a pretty good beer but am still trying to find my way around the Scotch ales.

22oz bomber
A) Pours with a finger thick head. Settles slightly leaving a thin off white colored head. Amber colored body. Nearly clear, just a slight haze.
S) Toasted malts. Caramel. Not overly aromatic.
T) Bold malt sweetness up front mixed with subtle alcohol but a bit thin in the finish.
M) Medium body. Mellow carbonation. Finishes with a slick tongue feel.
O) A decent beer. Not my favorite style so I can't be critical.

Chestnut brown with a very thin and short lived tan head and no lacing. Backlighting reveals good activity, modest clarity and some reddish/orange highlights.

An interesting and moderately complex blend of dark fruit, peat, and caramel.  Some boozy esters wafting up as well.

Rich caramel malty sweetness, understated but detectable hop bitterness, relatively faint peaty flavor and some dark fruit.  Much like the nose.  Quite nice, but not super deep.

Strong carbonation paired with a medium/full body, gentle warming and some light viscosity.  Other than the carbonation being a bit too strong, it is very smooth and finishes clean.

This is a good tasting brew that is moderately complex, but quite well balanced.  It certainly has elements of a wee heavy, but doesn't pronounce it loud and proud.  This is a good and respectable beer, but not an amazing one.

Caribou Kilt is chestnut brown with a small light tan head leaving very light lace.

Smell is dusty caramel malt, a little herbal. Improves in it's tasty, candi notes as it warms.

Taste is pretty smooth, a brightness too it, a touch of vanilla to the caramel and very distinct peach notes. Over-ripe fruit notes here too, which have some bite.

Mouthfeel is slick, a little frothy, fine, medium bodied.

Drinkability is ok. A decent slurpper, but I didn't love it enough to want to revisit. Just not quite there. The ripe banana kills it. This is not a 3 year old trippel, but it flirts with those notes. Nice smell though.

Chilled bottle into a glass. Thanks, Steve.

Dated 07-29-2011.

A: Pours a murky, maroon body with burnt orange highlights against a lamp. Despite a vigorous pour, I can't even froth up much head. It slowly rises to a half-finger in height. The beige bubbles quickly collapse into a thin film on the beer. No lacing, very minor collar.

S: Bread, toffee, caramel. A note of grassy hops. Pretty weak on the nose, but that may be from the lack of carbonation to carry an aroma.

T: The taste is more solid. A range of malty flavors lead the way, with bread, toffee, caramel, even a hint of raisins. Hops are dominated by grass, leaving a very light bitterness that dies by the finish. The aftertaste is slightly sticky with toffee.

M: Slightly thin-bodied, which is remarkable considering there is no trace of the 8.5% abv. No heat. Fairly clean finish with some lingering sweetness.

O: This is better than Moylan's Kilt Lifter, but it doesn't quite compare to Traquair or a few other greats of the style.

22oz bomber dated 05.18.2011. Pours a dark/burnt orange/copper with some brown hues. Nice fluffy head of about 2 fingers that gradually simmers down. Nice lacing/head retention on the sides of the glass. Bottle says this was a bronze medal winner in the 2008 World Beer Cup in the Scotch Ale category. This bottle specifies an ABV of 8%. Not the 8.5 listed above.

Smell is fairly reserved. Maybe some bready malts or earthiness with a touch of leather.

Taste produces a nice malty introduction. Some sweet malts/caramel are there at the start. Roasted malts as well. Traces of butterscotch. Very smooth tasting, not much in the way of bitterness in the taste, although does finish with a tad bit of a tea-like bitterness. No hint whatsoever of the 8.0%.

Mouthfeel is very smooth, almost a tad creamy. Nice full-bodied beer.

Overall, seems to be pretty much on-target with the style description. Let this warm some to let the flavors out.
