22oz bottle. A porter brewed with maple syrup. No bottle dating other than "2012" on the label under "Kassik's." Pours a dark cola with a voluminous sand-colored head of about three fingers. The head simmers down to a thick pillowy covering of about one finger. Nice lacing on the glass.
The smell is of roasted malt and some hints of maple. Also some caramel or dark chocolate in the nose.
Taste is a traditional porter with plenty of roasted malt, some caramel flavor, and a dry finish. This flavor profile is accentuated with sweet maple syrup taste in the background. The maple syrup is slightly more pronounced as the beer warms. Finish is also slightly bitter from the hops to balance out the sweeter malt and maple flavors.
Mouthfeel is very smooth with moderate carbonation. Finishes dry in the mouth. Intermediate viscosity. Easy drinking.
Overall a very tasty porter with the added element of a hint of maple syrup flavoring. From the 2012 vintage bottle: "A dark robust porter made with pure maple syrup, with a dry finish and a hint of maple flavor." An accurate description, in my opinion. Note that a portion of all Penny Porter sales go to Rogue Gallery Kennels.
