Split a bomber with my wife. This really isn't a Baltic Porter in the traditional sense. It is obviously top fermented and fairly boisterous (or at least it certainly tastes, smells and has the mouthfeel for it). However, it maintains a line between a porter and Impy stout, so I suppose it qualifies.

Pours a thick-looking opaque black with a dirty, ashen-brown head that leaves some whispy lacing.

The most noticable characteristic of this one is the aroma, which is pretty upfront: rummy-figs and diacetyl. Pretty nice initially, but I'm wondering where the more "usual" aromas are: no roasty/chocolatey/coffee notes?

The flavor is fairly subdued, but tasty. Some tropical fruit notes early, a little roasted bitterness and coffee flavor, and a lingering aftertaste that has some ash and buttery malt on the back of the throat.

Somewhat warming and coating, but the beer isn't as heavy on the tongue as it looks. The thinner nature of the mouthfeel combined with the aftertaste make it somewhat distracting.

An easy-drinking beer, but with some "complexities" that come through more like "complications".

Highly charged bomber, almost two inches of piled-up rocky and pillowy head. Nice patchwork laces. Dark Hershey bar color, appears to be hazy. Good aroma, bits of chocolate and a strawberry smell similar to Shakespeare Stout. Full-bodied and only moderately carbonated. Somewhat less than sweetly malty or coffee roast in quality but with some acidity. Not much in the complexity department, finish is slightly java with a little more hard roast. OK brew, I wasn't bowled over, but an attractive pour with a nice aroma.

Pours a slightly translucent, deep brown color with a thick, syrupy, long-lasting, caramel colored head. Notes of mocha, molasses, and roasted malt on the nose. Robust palate of coffee, toffee, molasses, malt, and just a hint of hops is absolutely wonderful. Mouth is nice and full, with a slight stickiness. A little bit sweet for an imperial porter, but otherwise just about perfect. I really like this one.

22 ounce bottle. Served in the new Sam Adams BL glass, the beer pours dark brown with a half inch tan head. Head retention and lacing are OK. Very nice malty aroma, it stood out once I opened the bottle. It smells like dark fruit, bittersweet chocolate, caramel and a mix of sherry/rum. The aroma is definitely more sweet than bitter. Unfortunately, the taste isn't as good as it smells. The first thing that hits me is an acidic sour taste. There's also some caramel and chocolate, but it's overpowered by the sourness. Mouthfeel is light/medium, it's a little bit oily and has low carbonation (which works good in this beer). Drinkability is OK, but would be much better if it wasn't for the strong sour taste. The sourness does ease up as it warms, but there's still enough of it there to bug me. I'll have to pick this up again in the future and see if a future batch has less sourness.

Pours deep ruby red hue with a moderate tan head that leaves thick lace on the glass.
Aroma has a big grapefruit and citrus, tangy hop notes are predominant with a hint of caramel.
Flavor is sweet citurs with a touch of caramel and faint bittering. Remins me of a weaker Alpha Klaus somewhat.
Mouthfeel is a little thin and watery. No roasted or bittering notes liek I would expect with a Baltic style porter.
Drinkability is OK. Good beer just would not calssify it anywhere near an Imp. Porter.

The beer pours a pitch-black color with garnet high lights, the head preposterous in size, spumescent in texture and a medium tan or light chocolate color if you’re so inclined, the lace forms a thick and glutinous sheet to seal off the glass. The aroma of toasted grain, sweet molasses, rich and attractive this nose, the start is sweet, light malt, and the top fair to middling in feel. Finish is middle of the road carbonation wise, the hops are devastating in their spicy bite, actually quite hop bitter, very dry aftertaste that perpetuates the hop and alcohol bitterness to the very end, if you’re into hops, and this is worth a try.

A notch shy of black, with crystal clear deep crimson flashes when held to light. Hulking, mountainous, rocky light bister head leaves sticky, tattered lace. Mellow dark chocolate along with floral, slightly citrusy hops dominate the aroma. As it warms, sharper minty ethanol, stately butterscotch and smokey coffeeish hints arise in an egalitarian manner. Ripe pear like esters are initially detracting in aroma, but eventually integrate well as the beer breathes. Definitely a shape shifter aromawise. In flavor, the incipient, assertive combination of singed, dark roast coffee, and barbed hop bitterness are promptly offset by sweeter, rounded hints of chocolate torte and sweet butter. Drys significantly mid palate, with a lightly smokey, carbonaceous, black patent surge supplanting the sweet chocolate character. Esters are more subdued than the aroma implied, with only trace prune surfacing late. Well integrated spicy combination of minty hop flavor and peppery ethanol hints emerges towards the finish. Dextrinous, creamy, yet dangerously brisk and drying mouthfeel. Finishes parching and lightly burnt, with an agreeable, lingering bite of carbonized barley. A delicious, well rounded brew with a rich flavor profile, but it remains soft on the palate and nearly thirst quenching. Superbly drinkable.

Reviewed from a 22oz bottle. Pours out an inky black with a slight tan head that leaves some decent lacing around the glass. Aroma is of a light dark chocolate and dark fruits. The sweetness and a touch of tartness from the fruit aroma really dominate the scent. As it warmed the sourness was a bit much. Taste starts with a bit of chocolate malt and more rip dark fruits. Again the strong fruitiness seems to dominate here. Finishes on a slightly astringent fruit note. Mouthfeel seemed a bit thin with a slick oily feel about it. A decent drink but the sharp sourness in the aroma really turned me off after a while. I would give this another chance though if I come across it again.

22 oz brown screen printed bomber poured into my imperial dimpled pint mug. The aroma is very chocolaty..roasted malts..very enticing indeed. the beer is a dark porter brown with a small yet clinging tan head..good lacing. lovelly flavour..mostly chocoalte ..dark unsweetned chocolate..coffee aftertaste , some bitterness..some hops detectable..slightly smokey. Feels very smooth and easy going on the palate. Overall a very good porter..another good beer from this Oregon Coast range brewery.

10/24/05- Purchased at Liquid Solutions in Portland, OR.

Presentation- 22oz bottle with no freshness info. Poured into a random pint glass.

Appearance- Black with auburn highlights in the pour. Solid 1/2 inch head with decent lace.

Smell- Some very dark burnt malts in the nose along with a slightly bitter scent. Coffee and chocolate in the mix as well.

Taste- The scent says it all. Super burning almost smoky malt taste with a fairly harsh supply of hops. One of the most bitter porters I have had. Coffee is more prevelant over the chocolate tastes.

Mouthfeel- As so many of the porters I've tried recently are overcarbonated...so is this one. Not real bad, but makes for harder consumption than a smooth porter.

Drinkability- Not bad at all. If you like your porters deep and dark...this one is for you...plus if you enjoy hops in your dark beers.

Had this along with the St. Bernardus Abt 12 at Redbones in Somerville. Couldn't resist the opportunity to try a true "northwest" brew. It poured opaque and black with a deep ruby red tinge. The head was magnificent, tan and creamy. Nose was very pale, but not hoppy, very different. The silky, creamy mouthfeel is to die for. The roastiness is very subdued and really, in this case, enhances the beer. I sense a light, chocolate flavor with a nice dose of hops. The finish is a tad dry with just the right amount of leftover roastiness. Really an outstanding brew, highly recommended!

Served on-tap at Redbones with dinner on December 9. Typed up from notes taken while drinking and eating.

Poured a dark brown in color with a slightly khaki head. Just a little bit of lace going on in the glass. Nose was simple--medium burnt malt.

Flavor was odd. Tasted like soured grapes. Rather acidic and nutty. Sour milk going on as well. The malts were slightly toasted and roasted. Also a string hint of chocolate came through towards the end. Rather thin and watery.

Something was missing in my opinion. This beer was just was not holding together all around.

The beer is black with red-brown highlights against the light. There's a mountain of doughy, rich tan head. Big pocks cause a rocky collapse. Very appealing. A cotton candy sugar wafts from three feet away. Bitter chocolate, tangy fruit and alcohol join it in the nose. Really, a sweet, rich, intense chocolate aroma. The start is sweet and floral with more tangy fruit and some cream. The middle starts to pucker with a sour, fruity spike through the sweet, chocolate body. Finish is very tobacco hoppy bitter. Also sour candy and quite roasty. This is a very intense beer, and very good. With temperature, the fruit remains but the sourness tames completely. The rich chocolate is able to get foothold. I really like this beer.

Pours dark brown with crimson tinging.
Beigeish medium head with light lacework.
Complex nose, filled with qualities found in an aged Baltic Porter.
A full stack of aromas- roasted and chocolate malts, hazelnut and vanilla coffee,Amaretto essence, caramel coated raisens, strawberry licorice.
Finishes with a subtle smoke and maple nod.
Thin to Medium in the body with vineous fruits.
Meaty and lush on the pallet.
Creamy, with chocolate covered coffee beans, accented with caramel and red wine.
Bitterness is perfectly balanced for such a delicate interpretation.
Finishes long and layered, with subdued alcohol and a hint of Flanders brown.
Not the biggest Imperial Porter but certainly delicious, and well friggin' done.
Good one to cellar, looked like it was bottle conditioned.

After this bottle followed me home from Portland OR and then to Chicago, IL, tonite it deserved to be spent.

Popped the cap and witnessed an opaque pall of brown russet hued pour that has an aroma that is sneaking over to me as I write. Top notes of a khaki spotty head that settles to a thin wafer coating. Spotty tan head slices down the glass.

Deep scents of pecan pie and toasted caramel sugar notes. Even some piny hops struggle for some air in this melee of a malt mangle.

First swigs: Bold tongue paralyzing flavors of thick toasty roasty and boasty malts. Bunt cake and pumpernickel. Exhaustive flavors that are a tongue workout. Piney hops and raw power baker’s chocolate and some molasses and flour.

Thick doesn’t do this feel justice. A fork should be sold with ever bottle. Astringency of day old cold black coffee that you drink because you are too lazy to make a fresh pot.

Last swigs: Baker’s chocolate astringency pulled into the lemony hops. Exquisite. $3.69 a bomber at John's Marketplace in Portland, OR.

Beer is good. Happy beering.

A peculiar brew whose portraiture is most un-porterly. Instead, this strong ale bears a closer homage to sherry wine and the stuff of crushed grapes. Even the smell evokes grape with a taste of tart grape skins. You might say it tastes like malt wine.

The beer presents with sheet lacing and a brackish brown body. The head is soft tan and well sustained, and of course, I do like the name (no relation). Black Diamond would seem to be a long branch off the porter family tree and it leaves me very curious as to the recipe. In the end, it’s a bit misleading to think of this as a porter, but it is an intriguing and curious ale, if not an outright oddity. I enjoyed Black Diamond but perhaps not for its intended reasons.

Thanks go out to BA bro cmaruschak for the chance to sample this rare West Coast goodie.

Appearance: Pure black with a creamy tan head that fades to an off-white ring around the glass. No visible carbonation noted.

Smell: Chocolate, carmel, toffee, and dry cocoa powder cascade out of the glass. It has a sweeter profile than I would have anticipated but it's very inviting.

Taste: Mayple syrup, carob, carmel notes, cocoa powder all jump off the palate. There are definitely sweeter and earthier tones (thanks Mark!) going on here. It's an interesting twist but after a while the sweetness tends to detract from the overall enjoyment.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied and a tad over-carbonated.

Drinkability: Suffers some because of the sweetness for me. Still, a very good porter and one that I would re-visit again. I would still recommend splitting the bomber with friends.

Sampled at the Siletz Road House and brewery in Oregon.

This is quite dark, but it still allows light through. It's semitransparent, in other words, with a very thin off-white head. A very roasted-malt aroma comes off this ale.

I haven't heard of imperial porters before. The brewers said they decided to make a really big porter and, hence, it's imperial. I would guess that its closest official style is robust porter?

What a flavor. It has a very rich taste without the tannin bite I've had before. It's smooth as glass, too. There is a noticable alcohol taste, which seems inevitable considering this ale's 8.5 percent ABV. Very good.

Bloody roasted chestnut that isn't quite opaque (as long as bright light is available). A coffee with cream colored head is presently filling the top half of the glass and isn't giving ground willingly. The foam has a wonderful texture with multitudinous surface bubbles and pits, as well as a smoothly rounded rockiness. A generous amount of thick lace is the capper to a great look.

The nose is impressive as well. The primary elements are roasted black malt--that provides a delicous dark chocolatiness--and beautifully aromatic, citrus zesty, lemon and lime hops. If the flavor follows the nose, this may well be the hoppiest beer of this style that I've had yet. Style purists may balk at 'defiling' a Baltic porter with American hops, but I say screw 'em, defile away.

A tremendous amount of sourness comes close to spoiling things. Black Diamond is plenty hoppy, but there's also a mind-bending, lemon juicy puckeriness that's out of place. I happen to like sourness, lemon in particular, so it isn't that bad. Still though, it would be a much better beer if that aspect of the flavor profile was toned down a bit.

A solid, chocolate malt backbone is present and accounted for, although it plays a supporting role when it should be playing a starring role (or at least getting equal billing). The beer tastes like a wacky breakfast drink of lemon and grapefruit juice-infused, chocolate-intensive coffee. Come to think of it, this is nothing at all like a Baltic porter.

Even though a roasted maltiness lingers on the finish, that tongue-tweaking citrus peel tartness outlasts it by a good bit. The mouthfeel is strictly medium. It's a bit thin for the stated style (which it isn't anyway) and is nicely smooth.

The silk-screened bottle states that Siletz Black Diamond Imperial Porter is a "veritable orgy" of flavor. Not quite, but I could go so far as to call it a threesome. I'd like to see the sourness halved and the maltiness doubled, but I still found a lot to like in this one of a kind, non-Baltic Baltic porter.
