I sampled this and many others brews at the Siletz Road House and brewery in Oregon.

This is a reddish-colored golden lager with a foamy white head. I had trouble making out any smell at all. But hops are very noticable in the flavor, which also has a very smooth mouthfeel.

Thanks to beachbum1975 for sharing this bottle.

22oz. brown bomber poured into a snifter.

A: Deep amber orange. Short head and no lacing.

S: Funky, sweaty ass. Stinking gym socks. Sickly sweet. Cinnamon in the back?

T/M: Funky, sour, sour cherries. More sweat socks. Disgusting. Body is medium with mild carbonation.

D: zero.

finally get to try a Kellerbier... pours a dark medium murky brown colour ... wow, this is an interesting style, has a nice mouthfeel but the aftertaste is what is strange(new to me), some sourness and tweakness , but refreshing and not drying out like sour ales ... i can see liking this style alot more with more practice (and different samples) but this beer is still kinda nice. lacing is 'a new rug' .... the aftertaste is so wicked and different, i can see most people hating this beer, but to the few who love shocking refresh beers and sour ales, should love this!! ..first bottle from BT...

It takes a lot for me to add a review, as I feel there are a lot of very knowledgable folks here that generally cover off my exact thoughts.

And some have already on this 'beer'. But I have to add to it. This is not beer. It is some bastardization that has gone too far.

Sour. Vinegar-like. That is what hits you first. Anything beyond that doesn't matter, it is an awful drinking experience. How an Oregon 'brewery' can create something like this is beyond me - AVOID AT ALL COSTS.

I've never fully comprehended this beer. It's brewed as a dark lager but has a more ale-like character with a bright fruity flavor reminiscent of a winter warmer. In fact, it's very sweet, accented with spice, and has a fluffy, quaffable body. I got notes of cherry, strawberry, and mango with a hint of banana. Bittering serves a secondary role for balance only.

There's also a tequila-like character to the taste and smell which I appreciate but remain puzzled over. I don't suppose there's any agave or maguey in this beer. And what is the implied reference to Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs?

The fine particulate haze present in the bottled version is also present on draught.

A nice malty beer of perplexing design though it does tend to tire. (Or was that just me?)

Appearance: Pours a clear, orangey body with a small, off-white head.

Smell: Here we go again! Some maltiness squelched in a sea of vinegar and unclean feet.

Taste: Just a filthy taste altogether. Malts abandoned to vinegary spoilage, what a shame. Midway into this fiasco you pick up an eerily tart, infectious fruitiness that never lets up.

Mouthfeel: Medium-thin body. Medium carbonation.

Drinkability: Siletz is synonymous with drain pours. Different bottles from various sources and various times and they're always infected. Siletz needs to tackle this issue once and for all or just give it up.

Pours a crappy light rust color with a small thin tan head, and average lacing. Average carbonation with a smell of sweet hops. Tastes of malt and corn with a woody bitter taste. Light on the pallet, this should be avoided.

A 22 oz bottle purchased at Capone's.

A: The beer is a pale, reasonably clear amber orange color. The head on each pour is reasonably large, thick and billowy but lacking in the retention department.

S: The nose is quite interesting. At first, I thought that the beer was off when I first tried the beer. Lo and behold, this bottle smells the same way and many other reviewers have noticed the same thing. The aroma is tart green apple with a great deal of graininess behind at, with those grains having driven the tartness.

T: The mouth is all malts, grainy with some biscuity elements. That darned green apple tartness just can't be shaken. It adds a strong flavor, much like a brett infection in a lambic, that it is the defining character of the beer. The finish shows off some grains through the tartness.

M: The mouthfeel is unique, tart without going too sour, really an interesting beer!

D: A decent beer with a unique sour taste, the beer is a variant that I'd refer to as a flemish sour lager, if such a thing existed.

This beer came my way from mac300 as part of Secret Bunny 07. I served this beer in a mug.

Appearance: The beer pours a slightly hazy amber coloration. The head is a biege coloration. Head retention is pretty good.

Smell: The beer has a very heavy grainy smell. The yeast brings a flash of spicyness. Floral hops dance in my nose.

Taste: The beer kicks up a very pleasing raw grainy flavor. A little bit of caramel flashes on the tongue. This immediately gives way to a grassy herbal spiceyness. A very nice bitter finish refreshes the palate. This is a very flavorful beer.

Mouthfeel/ Drinkability: The body of the beer is on the plus side of medium. The carbonation is active but not distracting. This beer is super flavorful with a lingering flavor. I enjoyed the beer from start to finish. I dont know keller bier as a style. I dont care how accurate this one is I like it. I would drink this beer often if it came to Cincinnati.

Poured from a 22oz. bottle into my DFH pint glass. appears a dark copper yellow with a finger of off white head. Smells of tart sour grapes and granny smith apples. Taste is of the same tart apples present in the nose as well as roasted sweet nutty malts. Creamy, full body with moderate carbonation. Very refreshing and unique. I would seek this out again without hesitation.

Hazy, rusty-gold brew with less than a finger of cream-colored head that falls to a light mat over bubbly beer. Smells of rich, nutty and honey-sweet malt and bit of perfume hops and alcohol.

Tastes raw, acidic and apple peel sour. Very little bittering. Beer feels hefty in the mouth, eased by abundant carbonation. Every couple sips followed by a burp.

Interesting. I haven't had a beer quite like this, which makes me that much more interested in tracking down another bomber. More cider-like, so it feels like a good fall-ternative to fest beer.

A: Pours and orangeish red, touch lighter than a marzen. Head is very nice...fluffy and barely off white.

S: Granny smith apples, green grapes and vitamin C

T: I already know what this going to taste like based on the smell and other Siletz beers...but here goes. Vinegar, unripe apples and bitter orange peels. Aftertaste of sulfer. :shudder:

M: Medium body with a frizzy mouthfeel.

D: Every other Siletz beer I've had been infected...I think. I haven't been able to verify. That or they simply suck. I've poured every single Siletz beer down the drain after only a few sips. I will never buy another Siletz beer again, ever.

22oz bottle from weefisheads via trade. Thanks for the opportunity.

Poured into an imperial pint glass, formed a 1 1/2" tan head above the cloudy burnished copper brew. Pillowy head fades slowly, with lots of delicate lace. Aroma is fruity sour malt. Taste is sedately tart upfront, with grains and hops all meshing together to mellow the rest of the experience. Mouthfeel is smooth, and drinkability is nice and tartly refreshing. Could be a sort of lambic intro or something, yum.

Appearence: Pours an almost clear copper with a thick, strong white head. The head dies down a little but never dissapears. Nice amounts of carbonation.

Smell: Oh my dear sweet mericful Christ in heaven. The smell is the most wonderful, glorious mix of cloves, cinnamon and so much more I can't put a finger on. Balanced as all hell, but complex as well.

Taste and Mouthfeel: Damn. Smooth, creamy, complex, everything wrapped into one sweet little package. Spicy & abbrasive yet balanced & smooth. Unreal. The spicy notes are amazing, and the cinnamon taste really blows my mind. The mouthfeel is smooth, clean, and slick.

Drinkability and Overall: Exceptional. Beyond exceptional. This one is truly a keeper. Balanced and smooth and complex and everything I'm looking for in a beer. And it's a lager. This one may rechange the way I think about German style beers forever. Wooly Bully is my friend.

--Sam the Sham and the Pharoahs

Resplendent rustic orange (with generous contributions from amber and red) filled to bursting with loads of fine yeast. The good-sized cap of pale orangish ecru looks soft, but holds its structure quite well as it descends. A blunted mesa appears in the center of glass and a respectable amount of soap sudsy lace is deposited. Too bad the lace doesn't last longer.

The nose is both lightly toasted malty and herbal-fruity hoppy. There are definite musky fruit notes, which makes me think of overripe peaches and apricots. I'd love to know what hop varieties are responsible. Bottom line: the aroma is different and likeable.

This is definitely good beer, one of Siletz's best. Great gobs of flavor fill the mouth with each upending of the glass. This bull is seeing red! A firm maltiness holds down the fort, but is the lesser of the two main flavor components (except for the rather generous sweetness that it imparts). This one is all about the hops.

Wooly Bully is just about as sour/tangy as a non-lambic can get and still find favor with me. It never steps over the line, though, thanks to the deft footwork and capework of the bittering hops and the sweetening influence of the malt. The cacophony of flavor sensations rip, snort and stomp, but never gore.

The body is on the full side of medium thanks to the generous malt load and the mouthfeel is silky as well as lightly, lingeringly lush. A fine-gauged, persistent carbonation keeps things from becoming too bogged down and syrupy. The aggressive flavor needed a relatively big mouthfeel and one was provided. Well done.

Without looking back at my Siletz reviews, my impression of this brewery is that they brew good, not great, beer that usually falls short of expectations. The silk-screened bombers are uniformly impressive (what's that about books and covers?), but the beer within those bottles has never really wowed me. Wooly Bully is a four-hoofed animal of a different color. I have no idea how closely it hews to the classic blueprint for Keller Bier, nor do I care. What I do care about is that it's delicious and oh so drinkable. And that's no bull.

Draft, Redbones. Hazy light orange. Shy off-white head. Gentle earthy malts combining with a deep earthy munich/vienna malts profile blending in with subtle grassy and floral hops. Bready, substantial balance. Light palate, very crisp and drinkable. Subdued german hops, truly growing on you with a rocky dryness. Wild in nature, fieldish, mature and fruity. Good!

Distinct fruitiness, perhaps from Vienna malt, is in good balance here with the very dry, herbal hops. The hop character is top-notch with a barely noticeable chocolate malt pushing through at the end. I'm most impressed by how all the flavors feed off each other. Rich and creamy from the yeast, yet still light and refreshing from the hops. A hint spicy -- as if there were coriander or nutmeg in this.

Relax, relax.

Wooly Bully was served from a 22 oz. bottle. In a pint glass, the beer was an attractive bright, hazy, and metallic orange copper color and was topped by a fine and persistant light yellowish head that left excellent thick sheets of lacing. The nose presented an energetic and complex maltiness that exuded characteristics of roasty nuts, toffee, and whole wheat. A wonderful complementing orange-floral hop bouquet capped it off. On the palate, a lively and rich smokey-roasted coffee bean-nut-toffee malt profile expanded with complexity and grace, then became drier, crisp, and more astringent in the transition to the excellent roasted juicy fruity orange-hoppy finish. The body was approprately composed for the flavors and character of the beer, as was the zippy carbonation. Due the superb balance and deliciousness of this unusual beer, I found it to be very drinkable. Wooly Bully is a tasty treat, worthy of your attention.

Sampled on tap at Redbones.

This lager poured a cloudy, orange-brown color with thin, white foam. The smell was malty with some mild floral hops in the aroma, very characteristic of lagers. The finish held some fruity hop flavors. The taste was slightly sweetly malty with some bitter hops to balance. The mouthfeel was a bit sharp with medium body and good carbonation. This was a good easy to drink lager.

Based on other reviews, I've might have had a bad bottle of this lager. The bottle said, "Hearty lager of deep golden color with an explosion of malty sweetness and balanced with a mild hop bitterness". The color was right, but, the aroma was yeasty and the taste was very flat and lack luster. There was no bitterness at all. Next time I'm up north, I may try it again!
