A - Atmosphere is nothing special, a nice neighborhood, but not an overwhelming store by any means...

Q - I've seen a few out dated items in the store (e.g. yeast and hops) and these items are ESSENTIAL to be fresh for your best brew.

S - Is great, when asked, they'll always answer all questions with as much info as they're able to give... Sometimes it's a lot and sometimes not so much... People are always very friendly and more than willing to help.

S - Not too great... It seems they almost always have only one choice (or, one fresh choice). Selection never overwhelms me by any means.

V - Over priced, I brewed:
-5 gal batch of Imperial Porter, Cost - $130
-4 gal batch Holiday Brew, Cost - $90

There's no reason brewing should cost SO much. My first few batches (purchased from a store other than OWHS) cost sub $65...

Great place to grab an items or two, but not great for the majority of your homebrewing...

This is my go-to supply store. They have been nothing but extremely helpful since my wife bought me a homebrewing kit for Christmas a few years back. The staff has always been willing to help answer any question, whether it be extremely basic, or an off-hand substitution.

They do seem to cater more to extract brewing, which works for me as I am still "honing my skills" before moving up to bigger and better things. They usually have a good selection of recipe kits, both year round and seasonals. A good assortment of LME and DME line the shelves, as well as nicely stocked bins of specialty grains.

A couple of two door coolers house the hops and yeast. I like the selection of hops as most are available as whole leaf and pellets. Wyeast Labs is what you'll find here including nutrients and "smack packs."

There is a decent selection of accessories covering your basic needs. You'll find yourself at other stores or browsing online as needs/wants ramp up with experience. The only other downside would be size. It is a small shop, with a couple narrow aisles and tight corners. However, this little shop is my favorite in the Springs.

For selection, this shop is the best I am aware of in Colorado Springs for beer supplies. They carry everything you need to brew extract, and from what I can tell they can give you a good start on all grain. They have specialty malts and a variety of canned extract, plus bulk extract (much cheaper). One of my favorite features is the good selection of whole leaf hops that they keep in a fridge with the yeasts. They have a grain mill in the store that allows you to crush the grain, which is also nice. I do not have extensive experience with homebrew shops, but my impression is that this place has a good selection of almost everything needed in basic brewing of most styles. My only complaint was poor service on only one occasion, and I have not seen that particular clerk since. It was my first time buying homebrewing ingredients and the clerk wasn't helpful with my newbie questions; acting like I should already know everything. Oh well, a good store can make mistakes in who they hire and good employees can have bad days. Overall I recommend this shop as a good place to go for homebrewing equipment and ingredients.

I've visited a few homebrew shops before, this one gave me the confidence to get started.
I spoke with 3 different staff members on different visits and all were knowledgable, helpful and friendly.

I purchased the Deluxe Homebrew kit and am very happy with it. First batch that came with the kit is in the primary fermentor right now and I have already purchased ingredients for the next batch. They have a nice selection and one staff member not only helped me shop for my ingredient list, but answered all my newbie questions without hesitation.

The store seemed a little small, but there are only a few things I would want them to add to their inventory (wort chillers, growlers, etc.).

These guys have won my loyalty and I have already recommended their store to a few eager friends who also plan to assist with my next batch to help spark their interest.

February 1, 2007, I was in downtown Colorado Springs and ran across Old West Homebrew Supply.

I was pretty impressed with the selection they had to offer. They offer 15-20 varieties of bulk grains. A full line of Wyeast Laboratories yeasts. They have dozens of types of hops in several retails sizes. I also found several pre-boxed kits for beginners.

I found it kind of interesting that they also offer yeast culturing equipment. This is something I have not seen in other homebrew shops.

They lady that was working there was nice but left me unattended. I found this to be a big problem when trying to make a purchase. I ended up putting back my selection and moving on.

Overall, this is probably the best homebrew shop in the springs. If you can keep the attention on the staff your golden!

A quality homebrew shop in downtown Colorado Springs. They have a good selection and a friendly staff. Beer supplies on one side, and wine on the other. The staff is knowledgeable and happy to talk about anything you might need, and suggest alterations if necessary. Also their website is easy to use and contains tips for the newbie.

They also have a cigar store on the other side of the building for all those who partake in tobacco.

Open: Monday-Friday 10-6 and Saturday 10-5, with free parking in back.
