My sister in-law brought me back a growler of Big Red from The Ram in Indianapolis. The beer pours a copper color with a big cap of cream-colored foam which left significant lacing down the glass. Nice looking, curiously not red though. The aroma is dominated by the citrus, mostly grapefruit, of the Amarillo hop. The palate is slightly oily due to the hops, per the style. A round malty caramel frames the hops, which dominates the flavor. The beer is a little thin as it passes through the center, but the hops rise again at the end. Bitter and citrus finishes off the experience. A typical no-frills IPA. I would like to see a touch more complexity.

Is it an Irish Red? Is it an American Amber? Without really deciding, the beer straddles the fence while adding a rich caramel under current and citrusy hops. A good beer but somewhat schizophrenic.

Deep amber and with a mild haze, the beer tops with an off-white head that forms a dense blanket of foam and then reduces to a thin lace around the rim. Decent for Reds, but because of the complex malts and hop content I expected better.

Toffee, light toast, and pine flavors hit the palate first while backup notes of Cracker Jacks ballpark candies and butterscotch follow up in a boldly malty fashion. Piney hops blend with orange zest, grapefruit, and fresh cut grasses for a hoppy rebuttal and balance to the sweetness and hearty malt character. Solid and steadfast, the beer doesn't oversell itself, yet proves to be satisfactory and rewarding in taste and aroma.

Creamy/froathy early, the beer slowly fades to lightness and hoppy-dryness without actually drying due to alcohol or lack of weight- kinda like malty-dry Scottisch Ales.

In conclussion, the beer is a fine hop forward American Amber Ale, but with the body and caramel sweetness so high, it's difficult to let the hops shine as a well made IPA should.

The best beer I tried at the Ram, it was still only a bit above average. It did have a nice deep red coloring, with a nice coppery tone to it. Good aroma, hoppy with a tang of bitterness, and hints of citrus. It goes down nice, but nothing spectacular. Very pleasing taste, though, a nice IPA, hoppy without having a too bittery after taste. If I go back to the Ram, this will be my beer of choice there.

UPDATE: Great hop tones with a great malt backing; finishes strong with citrus hops up front and some nice earth tones at the end. Great lacing and head as well.

Tried to got to Alcatraz Brewing , but they were closed by 10:00 PM. Went across the street to Ram instead. I was happy to see an IPA on tap. The color was red just like it's name. Unfortunately, they poured it in a plastic cup. Maybe it was beacause we were sitting outside, but that is no excuse. A nice play of citrusy hops. The grapefruit really came through. Did not drink as easily as I thought it would, but I did enjoy the hops.

I was on my first-ever visit to both the city and this establishment, so I started with the sampler. This turned out to be the best of the lot, so I decided to indulge in a full 18 ounces.

It arrived with a very light head, which I found myslef in a mood to overlook, above a slightly cloudy amber-colored liquid, which I also overlooked due to my frustration with brewers who over-filter their beers for the sake of clarity at the expense of taste. There was a nice bitterness on the tongue and the finish was still bitter, but offset by just enough maltiness to keep it drinkable. Not only would I have this again, but, IMHO, it is the best of the lot.
