look: 4 | smell: 3.5 | taste: 3.5 | feel: 3.75 | overall: 3.5

Vintage: August 2012 (bottling date)
Enjoyed: May 2013

Appearance: a hazy orangish yellow, with a finger or so of a head that leaves a slight lacing behind. head is off-white

Smell: strong wood character, some fruitiness

Taste: strong bubbly/champagne taste up front, followed by the woody character mixed in with fruity and funky yeast blends. fruit is pretty strong and comes off tart. strong acidity.

Mouthfeel: not super heavy but definitely bubbly and acidic. maybe too much acidity for the taste

Overall: This one is their proclaimed little leaguer of their sours. and rightfully so. would act as a good introduction to sours as it is not super powerful or super sour. still a pretty good beer but i prefer the more adventurous sours produced by arbor brewing.

Had a 750 at the brewpub over the weekend.Poured into a small tulip glass a tawny brown color with a thinner but well sustained white head.Aromas were plenty funky with the brett giving off sour notes with a bit of the toasted oak from the barrel showing thru as well.Dry and sour on the palate with a yogurt-like element to it,mild butteriness and toast was there as well but the sour funk won out easily.Iam not into sours but wanted to give it a try,not something I would go to often but it's a decent representation of the style...I think?

A bottle from Arbor's reserve list at the Ann Arbor brewpub. Arbor's Brasserie Belgian Blonde, aged in oak with coriander and orange added. Bottled in March 2009. Served cool.

A: The blonde ale was probably blonde at some point. The time in the oak barrel has added significant depth, darkening it into a hazy brownish autumnal hue. The last pour and its related yeast was excessively cloudy. A thick white head overflowed once in the bottle.

S: The nose is funky, tartly wild. The orange addition has imparted a rich citrusy scent that manages to rise above that funk. A pleasant ale to sniff.

T: The funk dominates the taste as well as the nose. The aroma is citric, acidic with lemony sharpness. Orange isn't as strong as in the nose but it does hang around. The funk is blankety when not citric, gamey at times. The more I sip on the ale, the more its delicateness becomes clear. The underlying blonde ale has lost most of its personality, replaced with the funk and delicious oak (although the oak also pales compared to the funk). The ale is also, it is worth noting, very spritzy and well-carbonated.

M: Lively, the ale is very bubbly. That leads to a hot feeling as the bubbles scrub away the flavors. The funk isn't dirty, a nice flavor that goes well with the orange.

D: The funk and carbonation are filling; I'm glad I split the bottle with ksak. I wish, though, that I had brought a bottle home with me. A very strong ale from Arbor, worth a look despite the $15 price tag.
