A solid pour into my Lost Abbey Teku tulip produces an almost three-finger thick, amber-tinged, tan colored head. The beer is a dark plum-red color that shows an almost brilliantly clear, bright cranberry hue when held up to the light. The beer smells tart up front, but then picks up a strawberry jam like note to it towards the finish; interesting I thought there might perhaps be some fruit used in the brewing of this beer, but I wasn't expecting strawberry. Though I expect this is a note picked up from something other than actual strawberries. Other notes of spicy oak, some light woody notes, a touch of buttery oak character as well as a general berry character that I associate with a fruity red wine. Funkiness plays a fairly significant supporting role in the aroma, contributing notes of musty damp clay, a ripe cheesy note, perhaps just a wisp of baby puke, some muskiness and even a wisp of rotting vegetal character at times. If you really dig around in the finish a toasty grain character starts to come out. At times the nose can really smell like a slightly molding, quite musty, plank of wood. The aroma is quite complex and I am really enjoying contemplating the nose of this beer.
Fairly dry tasting up front, but it picks up a hint of sweetness as it moves across the tongue. The beer really reminds me a lot of an oaky red wine; notes of black currents, bright berries, a touch of strawberry and the tartness here (dominantly lactic in character) also makes me think of wine. The oak contributes a light astringency and tannic bite to the finish that lingers on the palate. There is also a nice level of oak spiciness to this beer that also lingers on the tongue and it is not overly noticeable. The entire oak presence is actually done quite well here, it is not so much that it overwhelms the other flavors found here and I like that it doesn't accentuate the hot alcohol as so many an oaked beer can be. This has a nice level of carbonation to it, definitely not on the aggressive side, but there is enough of a substantial prickle to support the medium-leaning body that has some viscosity to it as it lingers on the palate. This is definitely a sipping beer though, as the oak, tartness and complexity make it a beer to be experienced in smaller sips (at least for me, though I could see myself drinking this fairly quickly if I was distracted by engaging conversation, so perhaps this is a nicely versatile beer). A touch of toasted grain character adds some complexity towards the finish. At times there is a spicy, not quite burnt, curing plastic like phenolic note to the finish that is neither persistent nor strong enough to get annoying. The flavor has a nice buttery note to it at times and there is a definite, though soft, mustiness to the flavor as well as a hint of muskiness. There is a hint of residual crystal malt and toastiness here in the flavor (which is likely much reduced from the base beer) that helps to add additional complexity and interest.
It is quite interesting how wine like this beer is (definitely red wine too), the nose has a touch more malt focus than the flavor, but even it is really evocative of a fruity, oak aged red wine. My second pour sees me noticing a melding of buttery oak and slightly overly ripe, funky cheese character in the aroma. I really like the lactic acidity that is here, it is not as aggressive as would be found in a traditional Lambic, but it plays a really nice off-setting role in this beer. This is a thoroughly enjoyable beer; it has quite a bit of complexity to it as the red wine character, the oak-barrel notes, the tart / funky fermentation character and the supporting malt character all work together quite well. I feel like I should be more critical of this beer for some reason, but it is so well integrated, so complex and it drinks so well that I can't help but really, really enjoy the experience. This is one that should age very well, I really wish I had a case of this slumbering in the cellar.

Reviewing both 2010 and 2011 during Kalamazoo Beer Week at Central City TapHouse
A- Cloudy amber, minimal head 2010 looks less cloudy than 2011
S- 2010 smells more sour but 2011 has more fruit, and smells more of the barel.
T - 2011 has much more of a sweet fruit note till it turns sour. 2010, the fruit has faded and taken on a more acetyl flavor. 2011 is much more fruit forward, like sweet strawberries or peaches.
M - 2011 much more lively that 2010. 2011 is great
O - overall, excellent beer, think its better fresh, 2011 is better than 2010 imo, but 2010 is more sour.

Poured from 750ml caged and corked bottle.
A- Pours a super hazy deep reddish color with hints of brown the further away it is from you. Two finger tan head shows medium retention. Big web style lacing on the sides of the glass.
S- Vinegar funky aroma in the front of the aroma. Hint's of oak and a cider like notes come through next in the beer. There is a nice funky aroma which is mostly barnyard and horse blanket. A light grainy aroma in the middle to ending. Light citrus notes in the ending as well. The interesting part to me is the light toasted aroma to it. Ending has a sour cherry note to it.
T- Lemon citus mixing with a white vinegar note in the front of the beer. There is a apple cider vinegar flavor that comes in next with hints of oak. Horseblanket and barnyard funk come in next but nothing over the top at all. Bready middle of the beer from the malts. Lightly soured cherries in the ending with hints of alcohol. Not as muti-dimensional as the aroma but still a flavorful beer.
M- Medium mouthfeel. Carbonation is good for the style. Funk, vinegar, light alcohol, and hint of cherry left on the palate. Aftertaste is heavier alcohol, vinegar, bready malts, and soured cherries. High alcohol drying left on the palate. Flavors were well balanced for the beer. No off flavors were present at all.
D- This was a very drinkable beer. While having funk and sourness it wasn't over the top and drinking one bottle would be easy to do. The ABV on this beer was there in the taste but nothing over the top like some of these beers.

Man. If only all of this beer were as good as the fragrance advertises. I mean, it's still a good beer. But the nose on this thing just screams Flemish. The flavor is amazing. Vinegar sour tones are definitely there. I get minute vanilla hints once in a blue moon. The woody tones are interesting as well. And consistent. You know the type I mean (if you've had some experience with the style.) This seems a purists interpretation of the style. Carries all of the characteristics of the style that you would expect to find, but usually wouldn't, even in Belgian productions. A difficult style to pull off. And this one seems to be doing it right. The folks at Arbor Brewing should be proud of this one. Glad I got a chance to try it out.

Pours a lightly hazy dark orange red, a bit of brown away from the light, slightly murky, no head at all, a few bubbles stick to the sides of the glass but almost no carbonation to speak of.
Smell is neat, lightly funky and sour, very woody and fruity, cherries, a bit of balsamic and malt vinegar, alcohol, oak, a bit of vanilla and spice, almost a bourbon like caramel note, neat fruit and malt character in the nose.
Taste is similar, sweet and sour up front, some fruitiness, cherries and berries, light vinegar, red wine and a bit tannic, some oaky woodiness, a bit of butter, vanilla, biscuit, touch of alcohol and spice in the finish, sour fruit, caramel going down, pretty neat, very light citrus note right at the end.
Mouthfeel is light bodied with low to no carbonation. Maybe a bad cork, but the beer is pretty neat and very drinkable. Has some Flanders Red elements and a bit of American wild, pretty cool. Thanks Russ!

pours slightly hazy deep red, never quite reaching brown. beautiful ruby and garnet flares when held to light. just a few scant bubbles resulting from an aggressive pour. few spots of lace.
aroma is great. malt vinegar. lemon. bit of cider vinegar. big horse blanket and leather funk. hint of alcohol. white bread and cracker. hint of grain. bit of butterscotch. sour cherry. nice funky profile so far.
taste is nice. lemon. malt vinegar. bit of cider vinegar. leather and horse blanket. white bread and cracker. hint of alcohol. hint of cherry. a little more one-dimensional than the aroma. it fills out a little more as it warms, but still seems just a little flat.
mouthfeel is nice. medium-light body with a fairly dry finish. pretty much non-existent carbonation. nice brett mouthfeel.
drinkability is pretty good. loved the smell. falls a bit flat in the taste, losing a bit of its depth. i think even a little carbonation would do wonders for it. looks like the carbonation is mixed in other reviews, so i'll see if i can find another and re-evaluate.

The beer pours a hazy orange-amber color with a white head. The aroma is oak with some tartness and some dark fruit. The flavor is tart cherries, leather, oak, vanilla, chocolate, caramel malt and red wine. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

A-pours a hazy medium brown, very low carbonation.
S-Very appealing. Definitely a sour, nice bretty nose, some apple cider.
T-Very tasty. Moderate sourness, nice brown ale undertones, delicious.
M-medium dry, a bit puckery but not overly so.
O-a very good sour.
