Fudge in a stout? Sure. Whatever you want to try, I will try too.

No unique character off ingredients. There is a nice mild roasted tone on there, which I don't see coming from fudge at all. But who cares. It's there and it helps with the overall. The only detractor is a somewhat tangy aftertaste that im not totally digging on. Smooth and easy drinking beer for the most part. I can dig it.

I picked up a bottle of Arbor Brewing Company's Mackinac Island Fudge Stout a few weeks ago for $2.23 at Toskey Sands Market. I've never had this beer before, but I have had the Fudge it's brewed with and i'm interested to see how it turns out, so lets see how it goes. No visible bottling date. Poured from a brown 12oz bottle into an imperial pint glass.

A- The label looks nice, the background color reminds me of the paper that they wrap the fudge in. It poured a nice black color that didn't really let any light come through with two fingers worth of dark tan head that died down to a thin ring that eventually faded away and it left some spotty lacing behind. This is a good looking beer, I don't have any complaints.

S- The aroma starts off with a higher amount of medium sweetness that borders on a high sweetness and it's followed by loads of malts that impart some nice dark roasted malts, slightly charred and coffee like aromas. Up next comes a big chocolate aroma that's pretty nice, but it has more of a bitter chocolate aspect to it than an actual fudge like aroma. The aroma was pretty nice and fairly true to it's name.

T- The taste seems to be fairly similar to the aroma and it starts off with a slightly higher amount of sweetness followed by a sharp chocolate flavor up front that's a little sweet and it has a bitter chocolate flavor to it with a little bit of chocolate syrup. Up next comes the malts that impart a roasted malt, grainy and coffee flavor with a lower amount of bitterness with a roasted and grainy aftertaste. The taste was just ok, the sweetness was a little out of hand and the chocolate flavor wasn't as nice as it could be.

M- Somewhat smooth, a little sticky, crisp, on the lighter side of being medium bodied with a slightly higher amount of medium carbonation. The mouthfeel was ok, but i felt it was a little too sticky and over carbonated.

Overall I thought this beer was just ok and I thought it was a pretty average example of the style, instead of imparting those nice and rich fudge flavors it seems like the fudge imparted a weird chocolate flavor that was just too sweet. This beer didn't have the best drinkability, it was somewhat smooth, but it was sticky, over carbonated, pretty sweet, and the taste didn't do the best job at holding my attention, one is enough for me and the sweetness would prevent me from drinking multiples of this. What I liked the most about this beer was the aroma and appearance, I thought they were both nice and they worked well with this beer. What I liked the least about this beer was the high sweetness and the high carbonation, they were both just too intense for this beer. I wouldn't buy this beer again, there's many other chocolate heavy beers that I would rather have and I wouldn't recommend this beer to anyone. All in all I wasn't impressed with this beer, it started off nicely, but when I got to the taste it started to go downhill and it never really recovered from the sweetness and carbonation. Better luck next time guys, this one just wasn't for me and so far it's one of my least favorite Arbor beers.

Mediocre at best. Does not have the fudge you wish it did since it's advertising that on the bottle. Very bland and unassuming. No head, no retention, slight roast notes and coffee. Slightest bit of chocolate but everything else is a watered down version of a boring stout.

Most striking attribute to this beer is the lack of anything that strikes of fudge. It's a mundane stout pours black with a large dark head that fades away pretty quick. Nose is like several other stouts I've had - heavy barley with a twist of hops maybe. Tastes tart, coffee like and rounded out by the slightest hint of chocolate but no more than any other stout. This doesn't live up to the label.

Served on tap at ABC in Ann Arbor.
Poured virtually black with a small but durable tan head.
Some chocolate in the nose but very little in the taste where there was a far mor prominent coffee note - this was the reaction of 3-of-3 craft beer drinkers at the table.
Very smooth; full body; well chosen low carbonation.

A nice stout but lacking the chocolate or fudge note that the names suggests.
