20oz pint, at Donegal Irish Pub in West Calgary, one of their house brews.

This beer appears a clear, very dark brown hue, with pervasive amber highlights, and one fat finger of tightly foamy, and somewhat creamy beige head, which leaves some random eroding limestone cliff face lace around the glass as it slowly ebbs away.

It smells of bready caramel malt, oily, buttery nuts, subtle bittersweet chocolate, ethereal milky coffee, and earthy, leafy hops. The taste is softly grainy, doughy caramel malt, a more subdued gritty nuttiness, somewhat sour mocha-twinged milk, a weak metallic flintiness, and tame weedy, earthy hops.

The carbonation is quite soft and innocuous, yet supportive enough, the body a decent medium weight, and generally smooth, with a well-wrought creaminess. It finishes off-dry, the nutty caramel essence sort of sloughing off all those tangential hangers-on.

A mostly pleasant and engaging brown ale, of the nutty persuasion, easy to drink, and not too bad to look at, either. Appropriate for the setting, and a mid-afternoon tipple, at that.

One of the house brands at Kilkenny, in Calgary.
Clear, dark brown color. Creamy, tan head, fades slowly leaving thin rings of lace.
Smells of caramel malt, and a bit nutty.
The taste has a good caramel base, some more nut flavor (might be toasted almond, but I we might be reaching). Ends with a little earthy hop bitterness.
Smooth mouth feel, medium body.
A nice brown ale, easy to drink.
Looking forward to try more of the Gas Lamp series.
