Pours with a brilliantly clear, deep amber color that shows pretty, rich ruby hues if held up to the light. The beer is topped by a frothy, initially three-finger thick, dirty, light tan colored head, that summons forth despite a soft, careful pouring of this beer. The aroma is a mix of citrus / pine like hops and sticky malt. Lots of crystal malt notes are found in the aroma; caramel, raisins and toasted biscuits. This does have a rich, and even dominating, hop aroma to it; notes of candied orange peel mingle with notes of berries and a solid herbal character that at times seems green with notes of menthol and pine.

The beer only has a light sweetness to it, at least the hops are big enough in the flavor to not let this beer get sticky sweet, though it does remain quite chewy. A solid bitterness runs throughout the flavor profile from beginning to end. At times it is even a touch astringent, especially in the finish were it lingers on in my mouth after the beer has already passed down my gullet. Big pine like herbal notes are the dominant hop flavor, but the malt sweetness does accentuate some soft citrus notes as well. The crystal malt character, while playing a definite role here, does not seem as big as the aroma might have suggested. Still this has lots of caramelized malt character to it, with lots of chewy brown sugar glazed bread-crust notes, and even a dry biscuit like character that is noticeable towards the finish.

This is certainly a big beer. It does not quite have the lightness on the palate that I would prefer of anything with the IPA moniker on the label, but it is certainly not as sweet and chewy as some that I have had. The hops are not as typical as many American IPAs, in that this leans toward astringent herbal pine notes and does not focus as much on the über-fruity hop notes of many (including my favorite examples of the style). The harsher, astringent hop notes are nice as a balancing character, but not really as the leading role, at least to my palate. Still this is quite an enjoyable beer if you have an inner hop-head.

Pscycohops got a sixer in a recent trade and split it with me. Thanks Bob! Poured from a 12 ounce bottle into a nonic Imperial pint glass. The ale appears a hazed golden apricot color with about an inch of creamy bone white foam. Nose and flavor are dominated by notes of citrus zest, lots of sweet caramel malt, toasty grain, orange and lemon, bitter hops, a touch of alcohol, and more malt. A notch better than medium bodied and amply carbonated.

I think that the 6 pack I got at Super H Mart (GA Hwy 85, near the Hindu temple, for locals; their sweet produce prices are better than their decent beer selection) may have been a little old. Couldn't find a date anywhere, so who knows?

Looks like what I expect from an IPA, but the smell is more malty than hoppy (which is part of why I think it's an older sixer).

Taste is certainly decent, but the other part of the reason I think this is an old six pack comes into play: I'm mostly tasting bittering hops. With this much bitterness, I really would like some floral or fruity hops presence that isn't there (and would definitely age out).

Mouthfeel is good (this is a category I generally ignore unless it's just awful or totally amazing).

Drinkability is very high, considering the ABV. Again, the apparent age of this particular 6 pack probably contributes.

Overall, a decent but not excellent beer. Bottles have screw caps, so that made me think it would be low quality. However, it's worth buying if you ever see it in a local store, just not worth seeking out if it's not readily available.

Peace man! Pours a darker amber color with a lighter red hue through out. Mostly cloudy with a fizzy head that quickly dissipates to the side of the glass. Does eventually die out altogether. Really dark for style.

The nose is more balanced along the lines of an east coast IPA. Hop notes are noticeable but still light for style. Mostly citrus and pine coming out. Not really complex and very distinct. Caramel notes comes out with equal force. Some lighter biscuit and toasted malt notes. Some yeasty notes including rose peddles, and oxidation.

The flavor is also balance but less noticeable faults. To start there is a strong bitterness overall but some nice citrus notes come out with a piney finish. Some lighter grassy notes mixed in there as well. A nice representation but the malt hides some of the flavor. Stronger kettle caramel notes with a touch of husky flavors in the finish. Not much beyond that. Some yeast notes but soft.

The body is limited for a DIPA. More of a moderate feel with some residual sweetness in the finish. Overall some limited characteristics, especially for style, but some nice flavors come out as well. Needs some help but still decent.

Review into my Blackberry at the bar

A- Deep caramel color and nontransparent. Head is 1/2" and leaves fast.

S- Very rich malts, caramel, and hops fill the nose.

T- Again, the sweet malts prevail and a good strong hop bittering is present too. The alcohol is definitely there and not well hidden.

M- Thick to medium in the mouth and high carbonation.

D- Decent. Strong alcohol takes away from the drinkability a little.

Overall- I would like to have some in my fridge. Not bad at all. I will definitely seek out myself a sixer next time I am in the beer store.

Bottle. Poured a clear copper color with a medium white head. Nice lacing. Mouthfell is excellent. Aroma was hoppy with a nice sweet maltiness to it as well. Flavor is sweeter and maltier than most IPAs, with some caramel tastes to it. Finish is hoppy with a nice citrus bite. A pretty good IPA, although the flavor seemed more like a pale ale to me.

I am not a beer judge, just a guy trying to describe the beer...rather clumsily.

A -Fairly dark amber, hazy with off white head dissipating quickly leaving some lace.

S - alcohol, resinous, reminds me of barley wine in some ways, nothing kicking me in the nose here

T - big malt dominated by hops with piny nice bitter after the swallow, the flavor is complex, hints again similar to a barley wine

M - fine carbonation, crisp, dry finish

D - for a big IPA, it is not startlingly bitter or dominating, but the wine aspects are very intriguing, highly drinkable except for maybe the alcohol which would catch up with you pretty quickly

It's too bad I only got one of these in trade, this is a really nice nice D IPA and much more complex than I expected

Pours amber to red in color, clear, with a small off white head that fades quickly. Aroma is of sweet maltiness, candy and sweet berries along with a hint of alcohol strength. Sweet caramel maltiness dominates the taste with sweet berry flavors, hints of grassy hoppiness work to balance it and grwo towards the somewhat bitter and dry finish. Mouthfeel is medium, slightly heavy on the tongue from the malts and low carbonation, a little hopy zestiness cuts thru this on the tongue. A good beer, and fairly easy to drink. The sample I had was fairly malt dominated with just a bit of hoppiness compared to what i expect for the style. Still, a good beer that despite the decent abv feels almost sessionable.

Appearance: Pours a hazy amber color with a rocky head that retains reasonably well and leaves the occasional shard of lace

Smell: Resinous piney aroma with some grapefruit citrus pith

Taste: Starts out with a resinous piney flavor that builds in pithiness by mid-palate; after the swallow, an intensely dry bitterness blows away the other flavors; underlying caramel malt character throughout

Mouthfeel: Medium body with moderate carbonation but a puckery quality because of the bitterness

Drinkability: Not very well-balanced, I'm afraid; still nice to see somebody in SC working in the higher gravity range

Thanks, ipa2xs, for the opportunity

From the looks and name of this, I assumed it would be another less-than-average gimmick beer. However, I was very pleasantly surprised.

Poured to a reddish copper with a medium off-white head that lasted well and left good lacing. Aroma was a very pleasant hoppy citrus (grapefruit) with grassy undertones and a hint of malt. As beer warmed, the 8.5% alcohol made itself known as well in the aroma.

Mouthfeel was mostly bitter, somewhat tingly, with just a touch of sweetness. The flavor, as expected from the aroma, was mostly on the hoppy-grapefruit citrus side, again joined at mid-glass by the alcohol.

This all blended very niocely into a long bitter finish.

Not bad. Pours a lovely red bronze with a monster thick off-white head with nice retention. Smell is much sweeter than I thought it would be with a very pronounced presence of hops. Very nice. The taste isn't quite as balanced as I would like for it to be, but it's still a damn good DIPA with plenty of floral hops and some malt sweetness. Silly package with nice contents.

*I did not mind might buy again just to see*

app:neat lil color.. nothing special but nice and crisp and inviting. nice head poked slightly out of the glass but did not fall over the sides.

smell: nice big smell, started during the pour. some fruity bright hops mixed with chewy fruity malts.. smells like a treat to me!

tatse: huh.. what smelled like a slightly mild barley wine tasted very watery on the first sip... strange.. it has a pepperiness like some saisons, it for sure is hop featured over the malts, but its not big. it kinda finishes with an american macro brew yest type taste.. each gulp has noteable differances though.. strange.. that time it was the sweet chewy malts up front... its almost like this beer has insecurity issues and it sees what I am typing and trys to become what I want it to be.. but its not.

half way to the bottom.. better than the start. my main thoughts .. i think.. are it is a bit weak and watery, has no real flavor identity from the time the beer enters your mouth through to the aftertaste.. I have overmarinated food before and this has happened.. when you taste the bits of flavor as seperate units.. instead of a unified FLAVOR of its own. as reviewers we try to pick apart the FLAVOR into many bits of flavor.. but if the beer does this all on its own it kinda takes the fun out, and frankly it sucks. (this beer does not suck, just the missing fun)

mf: nothing special.. sept the bright peppery feel.

dink: uh huh. though I have had "bigger" ipa's that were more drinkable.

Notes: First thing first. the lable says Indian Pale Ale. THANK YOU WOODSTOCK! I am sick of this double triple wipple crap. As beer making advances so does BEER! big suprise.. and all us beer nerds are now drinking doubles like they were singles and triples like they were doubles.. I do not like the marketing hype of those words, mostly because there is no real agreed upon numbers or standards as to what they mean. they simply mean BIG. and hopefully BETTER. just list the ABV% on your beer somewhere and let us put the pieces together. That said I wish I could bump all the scores in this review up just to reward this company for calling their beer what it really is.. A FREAKIN IPA WITH 8.5% ABV. not a double or a triple anything.

Cheers, I cant wait to try more from these honest people!

This beer was tasted in a pint glass from the 12oz. bottle. The review was written at the end of June. As a note this beer is sold by Woodstock Beer Brands in Marrieta, GA but brewed by Thomas Creek in Greenville, SC

The beer pours a ruby amber with a frothy white head that leaves a nice film and a fantastic lace. The smell is malty but not the typical Thomas Creek malt smell along with some nice citrus hop aroma. The taste is nice and malty with a robust hop flavor. It tastes like the hops are incredibly fresh. The varietal seems to be centennial. The mouthfeel is nice and full bodied with a good carbonation. Overall its a good Double IPA. There are better IPAs out there but its nice to see this from a a local brewery despite South Carolina's cap.

The first high gravity beer to come out of South Carolina that I know of, this one can’t be sold there due to the cap, but apparently brewing it is no problem. Looks like, it will be sold only in Georgia for now. The label was yellow and green, with a decidedly 60’s hippie theme to it. The label called this an India Pale Ale, but with such impressive stats as 77.6 IBUs, and 8.5% ABV, I’d say this one is pretty solidly in the DIPA category.

When poured out of the bottle, this came out orange amber in color, and boasted a three finger head in the Tulip glass. Carbonation looked steady, but the body was clear, so I am not sure about bottle conditioning. The smell was a little mild for the amount of hops put in it, with a pungent spiciness, and fumy alcohol. Taste was hoppy, as anticipated, but the malts masked the apparent bitterness, and revealed more of a citric and spicy hop character. The very well done grapefruit rind hop profile was backed by a sugary sweetness and a hint of apricot. The alcohol was apparent, but the beer was much easier to drink than the strength, and the smell first suggested. The aftertaste was white pepper spicy and chalky dry.

A well done DIPA coming as a debut of a brewery is good thing. Hopefully the sales will be brisk enough to keep these folks in business. I’d like to see more from them other than the Pilsner that is also on the shelves now.

"At 8 1/2% by volume and brewed with three varieties of hops, Woodstock IPA is the new Imperial style ale with plenty of bite to match its bark!"

And I'm sure you do, honey. I'm sure you do.

Appearance: Pours a clear copper body with a foamy white-colored head.

Smell: The aroma is a mixture of caramel malts and earthy, modest hoppiness, with an extra whiff of orange peel.

Taste: This was a spicy meatball. Generous caramel malt flavors and citric hoppiness, along with a fruitiness that gives the impression of orange wedges. Dry, grainy finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied with steady carbonation.

Drinkability: Amply flavored brew that's bitter, but not overly so. Could benefit with a bit more body and a fuller malt flavor, though.
