Two steps and two doors take you into the front bar of this Real Ale loving Inn. The actual bar is straight in front across a wooden floor, a real fire is to your left, another doorway on the right takes you to the toilets and two further drinking areas and the back door.
Basic furnature and beer posters, pictures of steam trains and rows of pump clips let you know this is a serious drinking establishment, the eight handpulls and quality foreign fonts ensures that you don't forget.
Hobson's Best Bitter (a local brewery) is the only regular draught ale, the other seven pumps change all the time.
Twice yearly beerfests are fantastic, the rear room is kitted out with extra handpulls, so 29 cask beers on handpulls are available at one time. The landlord claims it is the largest handpulled pub based beerfest in the world, anyone know different?
Live bands, folk evenings, the selling of huge eggs and smelly cheese make this a focal point for the people of Oakengates and beyond.
I was in here again just before Christmas 2006. Here is the list of cask beers that were available: Shep Neame 'Twinkle Toes', Archers 'Robin Redbreast', Hook Norton '12 Days of Christmas', Spinning Dog 'Santa Paws' and 'Springer', Hobson's 'Best Bitter', Bateman's 'Mild', Tring 'Ridgeway' and Hanby's 'Stout Fella'. You can add two ciders, Amstel, Real Bud (Black and normal) and a few bottles. Now that is what I call a good selection, plus the ones I tried were all in tip top condition.
