This place is a gift from the beer gods sent down straight from heaven. I've never seen such a great selection of QUALITY beers at one store. There are plenty of hard to find Belgians here; but the place also boasts plenty of hard to find out of state American brews. They offer a 10% discount if you buy 6 or more bottles (not sure if size matters). I ended up buying 12, mostly 750s of hard to find Belgians. Kasteel, St. Bernardus (all beers), Tripel Karmeliet, Jolly Pumpkin brewery beers, etc. Well worth the trip for any lover of quality beers.

topped in here for the first time earlier today. A guy named Nate happened to be working the register.

Wow was this selection impressive! And most of it (or at least half) was kept chilled. The majority of the beers came from Belgium and other northern European countries (I saw a ton of Mikkeller), but most the rest came from the good old U S of A. No BMC here, and not even any mediocre breweries. Jolly Pumpkin, Mikkeller, Nøgne Ø, Russian River, Cantillon, Stone, Baladin (there were a good number of Italian beers too), HaandBryggeriet, Goose Island, the list goes on and on! I can't say enough about the selection - you'll just have to see it for yourself.

I chatted with Nate (the cashier) for quite awhile, and the guy definitely knew his craft beer. In fact, he probably knew more about craft beer than I do, which (don't take this in the wrong way - I'm not a cocky guy) has never happened to me at a beer shop before. It was really enjoyable! I was able to get honest opinions on just about everything, even the odd/rare styles like faro and gueuze. Nate claimed that he had tried 80-90% of the beer sin the store, and I certainly believe it. After finalizing my order, Nate hooked me up with a free reusable bag (long story, I lost mine, etc. - it was a very nice gesture). Top notch service!

I also found out (partially through the Healthy Spirits website, partially through Nate) that Healthy Spirits has a Beer of the Month club. For $40-50 a month, subscribers get monthly beer packages loaded with the rarest and most highly-sought-after beers Healthy Spirits has to offer. Last month, subscribers got a bottle of Bourbon Barrel-Aged Old Dipsea With Brett, which was only released at Marin Brewing Co. and Healthy Spirits. Yeah, it's that kind of beer store.

All in all, this was a fantastic experience! Healthy Spirits is the best beer store I've ever visited, and I recommend it to anyone within driving distance of the place!

I love this store. Their selection is among the best (or perhaps the best) in the Bay Area, the staff are exceptionally friendly and helpful, their communication with customers can't be beat (updates via facebook and blog when new stuff comes in), and their Beer of the Month club has expanded my tastes significantly. Sure, you pay a bit of a premium because it's in the city, but it's worth it (and the 10% discount for BotM members offsets it somewhat).

If you're in the city, check this place out.

Ok, in town visiting family, and just happen to look through beerfly for a store with good selection.
The name got me originally - Healthy Spirits, gotta love the name!!!
The location isnt too far, and once i start to read the reviews, I am hooked.
I walk in the store and meet Dave. Talk about a great "host", since salesperson just doesn't cut it.
After introductions, he spins me around, and my jaw hits the floor at the Belgian selection he has there!!! HOLY %$#$%^
So. Cal has nothing like this, and don't even get me started on Nor. Cal beers. Russian is my fav, and he mentions a little "back stock" that I take advantage of.
I left there a happy person, and Dave, when you read this, you can definitely expect me back whenever in the bay area, and I cant wait until the shipping thing gets going.
Cheers to the crew.

What can I say about Healthy Spirits...other than this is now and forever will be my "Go To" place in San Fran..
here's my story...
So while browsing the forums I noticed that Rami of Healthy Spirits has just posted that he has a limited number of bottle from Russian River in..just a few of each. Me, living in NJ, started thinking "how the fuck can I get my hands on these bad boys" without performing some kind of Fantastic Four stretchy-man act.
Then it hit me...isnt my ex-wife in SF on a business trip??? HELL YEAH she is...
So a few sweet text messages to butter her up and BINGO...she's willing to be my beer mule!
Now I gotta get in touch with Rami and see if we can work out how to get her the beers since she's in a day long meeting.
I call Rami...and he is, in a word, unbelievable.
First he tells me what he has...then he puts the beers I want to the side. He tells me if it comes to it he'll find a way to get the beer to her hotel...are you kidding me? He's awesome.

Anyway...as it turns out my ex is able to get out of her meeting early and take a cab there. She's on the phone with me the whole time while Rami and her are adding to the order... being a beer drinker herself she also wanted a few of these goodies.

So there's my tale....
an exceptional store with exceptional people working it.
Thank You Rami!!
and hey...thank you to my ex-wife, Kanesty, for being a good sport.

My absolute favorite spot to buy beer in SF. Dave is super helpful, especially so for an out of town customer. As someone who likes Belgians and American Wild Ales especially, I could not ask for a better selection. They seem to specialize in locals, Belgians (esp lambics / geuze), and more exotic European offerings - Nogone, Mikkiller, Haandybaak. Of course, your Russian River and Lost Abbey needs will be taken care of here. Expensive? Yeah buddy, but it is premium beer in San Franciso. What do you expect?

I was lucky enough to spend about 2 hours here with Rami this past week.

The selection is amazing! Everything is seemingly hand-picked and the breweries are all top-notch that he carries. Rami clearly specializes in beer, and knows what he's picking up. He has sandwiches and coffee available as well, both very high quality. After visiting this store, I wish I had one like this here in Madison. He had all the R.R., a bunch of Lost Abbey, and the Belgian selection rivals others I've seen. The only thing is there didn't seem to be many, if any sixers, but I didn't go for them so it didn't bother me at all.

What a great place, it's a can't miss for beer shoppers!

If you've never been to this store, and were just driving by, Healthy Spirits would appear to be just another Mom and Pop small corner store. But those in the know will quickly see signs that this store is a special place. There are several different brewery signs in the front window, including an iconic Chimay sign hanging outside. There also might be a sidewalk sign that says they know hummus, bourbon, and beer, or that boasts they have more than 500 bottled beers.

Once inside, get ready for beer nirvana. The selection of beers is just fantastic. They get most of the beers that are in distribution to the west coast, and Dave Hauslein, the beer manager, gets his hands on lots of special allocations. Dave runs their beer of the month club that I have been a member of since it started, with great selections of new things to try and interesting writeups of the beers. BOTM membership comes with a good discount (15%) for buying additional beers, which makes their prices fairly competitive with other providers in the Bay Area.

The service is outstanding. Rami, Nate, Dave and others know their beers and can be depended upon for good advice. I do most of my shopping here, except for some special allocation beers they may not have. They also ship and they have a website with product updates and that has their entire inventory and prices (http://healthy-spirits.blogspot.com), updated regularly. They have added a line of specialty beer glasses too.

It is wonderful to have this resource just a few blocks from where I live. It's not their fault, but a downside is that due to city laws, they are prohibited from pouring because they are a block away from an elementary school. Wish that would change.

I ordered some Beatification 002 and 003 from Healthy Spirits and I am very pleased with my purchase. Rami was very helpful in putting together my order and my beers arrived in perfect shape. The prices were reasonable, communication was great, and the selection of beers was darn good. I will be doing more business with Healthy Spirits in the future based upon my first experience. It is nice to be able to order beers like Russian River that are not widely distributed. I am hoping that they will be carrying Consecration when it is released in bottles.

I Stopped in on a Sunday morning a few weeks ago and scored some Abyss and PTE. This has to be one of the best beer stores in the entire country. While the size of their selection isn't huge, the quality of what they carry is second to none. If you are looking for West Coast "hard to find" beers, this is the place to go.

Dave (the beer guy) was friendly and very informative. Just talking to him you can see and hear his passion for beer. If you can prove to him you know what you are talking about he might even share with you some of the gems he has in the back room. But you have to ask.

In town for a few days and had to visit this place that I've ordered from over the phone before. Walking up the street wasn't sure what to expect and when I finally got to the door I thought "this small place is it?"? Yes, yes it is! AWESOME selection. I am on a Russian River mission so I quickly scout it out and put bottle after bottle on the counter. Rami (Owner?) is VERY helpful and nice and we have a great conversation about beer as I'm carefully scouting out the place looking for everything I can't get locally. Breweries include: RR, Stone, Bruery, New Belgium, Midnight Sun, Alaskan, DFH, Mikkeller, Nogne-O, Port, Deschutes, etc...etc... and tons of Belgian stuff. If you're ever in San Fran, you HAVE to check this place out. Excellent selection and service, I highly recommend.

Updated Review 22-Nov-2008

In the ten months since my initial review (below), Healthy Spirits has continued to grow its beer selection and prominence in the Bay Area beer community. I bet there are 150 more beers there today than the several hundred stocked earlier this year.

The Belgian focus still remains strong, and they're the only source for a great number of obscure Belgian and Belgian-styles. Yesterday I saw two beers from St. Somewhere in Florida, thus far not seen elsewhere in the Bay Area, and three obscure Dupont varieties unique to this shop.

Unfortunately prices remain on the high side, so this wouldn't be your go-to place for stocking up on regular drinkers - BevMo or even City Beer Store rule the roost there.

But Rami and his new guy Dave have really turned this unassuming corner store into a world class beer destination. They're in spitting distance of Ledger's for selection, and way past Ledger's in general ambiance and enjoyment.

Initial Review 08-Jan-2008

In just over a year (essentially the whole of 2007) I have seen this shop turn from a quaint but unremarkable high-end corner grocery with a nice Belgian beer selection into an outright paradise for Belgian and similar-styled beers.

Plumpjack Noe Valley used to rule the San Francisco roost when it came to Belgian and obscure imports (aside from the Toronado's oft-overlooked but amazing bottle list), but as of early 2008 this is no longer the case. Healthy Spirits has the best stocks of its chosen niche - overall not as broadly interesting as City Beer Store, but much deeper than either CBS or Plumpjack where Belgians are concerned.

The beers are everywhere - most stored very nicely in coolers with low light, but with others in racks all around. There must be 300+ Belgians alone, not to mention a smattering of other imports and good American stuff. Be sure to peruse the whole store (not hard - it's a small place), because there are often one-offs or odd-format bottles in places you wouldn't think to look.

Prices, unfortunately, are a bit high overall, and if BevMo or even City Beer gets the same item, you're almost guaranteed to get it for less there. But the overlap isn't significant, and there are a great many treasures that find their way only to Healthy Spirits in the Bay Area.

Rami, the owner and proprietor, has a deep commitment to establishing a fabulous beer selection (and BA Clickpush helped make it a reality when he worked there).

Rami's taste is other food and drink is impeccable - you're unlikely to find a better selection of high-end deli-like food and coffee anywhere else in town. It's hard for me to think the neighborhood walk-in market can support such an over-the-top high-end beer selection, but let's hope it keeps going on.

It looks like parking would be tricky, but I've never had a problem finding a spot within half a block of the store.

The world needs more places like Healthy Spirits. It and City Beer Store are now *the* retail places to go in San Francisco.

A beer advocate's heaven. Dave's knowledge of beer is astounding. He has IBUs and OG memorized for what seems to be all the beers he sells. All the staff is very friendly and informative. They get some of the hardest to find brews in the area. Their prices will certainly be more than a BevMo, but you don't go to Healthy Spirits to get the beers that they sell at a BevMo.

Check out their blogspot (linked on here) for a listing of their current selections and any rare and new additions they may have.

Oh yeah, and be sure to get a nibble of the hummus while you are there. They usually have some out to sample.

Visited Healthy Spirits on my Honeymoon last month. I found it on beer advocate, and the website they had set up looked promising.

Upon arrival, I had a list from the website that I was in search of. They had everything on the list. This is a freak occurence if you're used to hoping that stock matches the website at liquor stores. The gentleman behind the counter was courteous and extremely helpful. I needed help locating everything on the list, even though the store is quite cozy. The selection isn't massive like a chain, but doesn't need to be, because they have stocked everything that a beer lover would ask to find.

They make their own hummus in house and we tried a few. They were all fresh, some spicy and others sweet, and would have gone great with an ice cold beer.

We ended up shipping about 15 bottles home from this store, and are so glad that we went out of our way to find it.

I visited all the top rated Beer Advocate beer stores in the Bay Area, and I believe Healthy Spirits has the best selection of beer on the San Francisco Peninsula (although several beer stores in the East Bay Area have more, such as Perry's in Livermore which has the best Bay Area selection).

They have a great website (http://healthy-spirits.blogspot.com/), which includes their beer prices (a HUGE bonus), and it lets you know when beers are out of stock.

The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable. They even sell some pretty decent food & snacks if you're hungry, and will often put food out (like cheese) to sample.

Definitely worth stopping in to see the selection. I picked up many great hard to find beers here.

Best bottle shop in San Francisco. Healthy Spirits is unassuming on the outside but is packed full of great beer ranging from sought after locals to hard to source rarities. They maintain an up to date inventory list on their website and post shipment updates constantly. While it is good to be surprised by what a store has in stock, even better to know what you can get before you buy. Healthy Spirits runs a well priced beer of the month club which will get you those special releases and introduce you to new beers. Plus the make some of the best hummus.

Healthy Spirits has become a normal stop for me when I'm in the San Francisco area. The staff (only three people) are very knowledgeable and are always willing to make suggestions and give opinions.

This is a fairly small store, but they have some great stuff packed in here. They carry Boon, Deschutes, Port Brewing, Shipyard, Russian River, Hair of the Dog, Mikeller, Nogne O, and tons of Belgians.

The prices are a little high, but the beers are first class and priced appropriately.

This is a must see place if you're in the area.

Romey and Dave are good people! They have some solid raft/micro brews in store as well. Quaint nice shop located in a cool location btwn Castro and Haight. I was in from out of town and they were able to offer me a good base of beers which were enjoyed during our vacation down the CA coastline to LA. I will definitely visit them again next go round. Ohh, Thanks to Romey for the tip about the hip North Beach area. I strongly recommend this area to Italian cuisine lovers. Thanks for the stocking such a selection!

This is kind of a two part review for me. My wife was going to be in San Francisco for business so I immediately scoured BA for reviews. Saw some nice things about Healthy Spirits, and that Rami was an active member of our little community so for me the search was over. I contacted Rami by email to check on a few things, and received a very prompt response about what they had in stock. Very nice.

My wife said it was a short cab ride from where she was staying at the Argonaut. When she arrive Dave was working, and according to my wife the only place she had been that compares to the helpfulness she received is Bruisin Ales in Asheville. So that's a rave review from her. She said the store was nice, and the selection was outstanding. Seeing what she brought home I'd have to agree. Dave even called her a taxi, and offered to make her food while she waited. He even recommended a couple of local restaurants she really enjoyed. Class act all the way. I look forward to hopefully visiting as well in the future.

We stopped by Health Spirits today, and were very pleasantly surprised by the selection. The sign in front says 555+ beers, and I believe it. The proprietor was friendly and helpful with my choices, and he offered to get room temperature bottles after I told him I was traveling. He offered a couple of beers that weren't in the case once he saw what I was looking for, and the place has a 10% discount on purchases over 6 beers. What more can you ask for? They have a great selection of northern CA and Belgian beers, but I thought it was a little weak on darker beers. Really, this is a minor complaint. It is an excellent store, and I highly recommend it.

Located right in the Castro district, I would have driven right by this place if it didn't have a Chimay flag out in front - the place is tiny, but the selection is nothing short of astounding.

While here, I picked up RR Beatification, JW Lees Vintage Harvest Ale 1999, Gouden Carolus Cuvee, Gouden Carolus Noel, and DFH Palo Santo Marron. Most of the beers are refrigerated, too.

I didn't get to meet the famed Dave while there, but this place was well worth the trip. Do not pass up this gem of a store if you are in the city.
