12oz bottle poured into a snifter. Bottle provided as a generous extra by normyk, thanks Rob!

A - Pours a soda-colored brown that completes the look with a small, 1-fingered, light khaki-tinted head. Retention is low but leaves a thick ring around the sides of the glass. Lacing is modest, but thin and spattered.

S - The two dominant smells in the nose are whiskey and vanilla. It's hard to get much of the base beer underneath the barrel, but there is some evidence of coffee and chocolate. For the most part, it smells basically just like whiskey.

T - The taste is a bit more balanced than the nose; given the aroma I was expecting a ton of whiskey and alcohol heat, but the liquor is kept in check nicely. The oak barrel really makes an appearance here as well, imparting wood and vanilla notes. Given the striking appearance to soda, the taste actually has a pop-like quality to it as well due to the mouthfeel and vanilla, almost like Vanilla Cola with a whiskey mixer. Some light chocolate plays on the tongue in the finish, but the coffee roast from the nose is suspiciously absent. Finish is moderately short with a whiskey, watery feel.

M - As this was my first barrel-aged porter, I was sure what to expect given a porter's tendency to be a bit thinner and watery than stouts in my experience, and it certainly gives this beer a new feel. It honestly feels and has a bit of taste like soda due to the thin mouthfeel, moderate carbonation, and a flavor combination in the taste.

D - Drinkability is moderately high. Although the flavors aren't revolutionary or incredibly bold, I found this beer quite easy to drink. I think the thin mouthfeel is a double-edged sword here; on one hand, being a big fan of whiskey in general, this reminded me of just a straight glass of liquor with a bit of water in it to cut the harshness, but it's also incredibly smooth as well. Conversely, I think stouts are more popular for barrel-aging specifically because of their more robust body that takes the whiskey barrel to a new level. I can honestly say though, despite (or because of?) the weak feel, this is one of the easiest drinking barrel-aged beers I've come across and I would've loved this as an introduction to what barrels can do to beer (instead of my trial-by-fire with Weyerbacher's Insanity)...

Pours a typical porter "black" and has pretty good whisky notes in aroma. Taste is waayyy too sweet. No roasted malt flavor at all. Some of the whisky still comes through in the taste though. Not awful by any means, but not a good porter either. Potential if the base beer was improved.

Reviewed from notes. Poured from 12 oz. bottle into a Cycle pint glass.

A: Pours a murky brown color with a thin tan head fades that fades quickly. Low amounts of visible carbonation. This isn't very pretty.

S: Wow! Whiskey mostly overpowers anything else that might be here. There's some barrel oak with a touch of vanilla, roasted malts and a bit of dark fruit - but mostly whiskey.

T: Whiskey and whiskey, as the nose suggests. Some barrel oak tannins, vanilla, roasted malts, and a touch of raisin character. Whiskey and sweet maltiness in the hang.

M: Thin, weak body with low carbonation sensation. It's interesting - this doesn't carry much alcohol heat, despite everything the nose and flavors suggested.

O: Somehow they managed to infuse huge whiskey flavor without much barrel or alcoholic heat. While that may sound interesting, it served only to cover up what I suspect was a sub-par porter as a base beer. Or, at least, it didn't have the big flavors required to stand up to the massive amount of barrel-aging they put it through. However, the lack of mouthfeel was the biggest drawback to me - thin and nearly watery, not like a good porter should be. Whether the base beer had much to offer in the way of flavors in its own right, I suspect I will never know. Not truly offensive, but feel free to skip this one without any fear of missing out.

Appearance: Pours a clear mahogany capped by a rather modest head that fades rapidly though it leaves a few dots behind

Smell: Caramel, Bourbon, oak and vanilla

Taste: Caramel and vanilla flavors, up front, with the Bourbon and oak elements integrating in the middle; nicely balanced in the finish

Mouthfeel: Medium body with moderate carbonation

Overall: Why the brewery insists on calling this a Porter is beyond me as the base beer is somewhere between an Amber and an Old Ale and is nothing like a Porter; that beef aside, unlike so many others, my bottle was not infected and the beer drinks very nicely; clearly there is a solid Bourbon character but it is complementary without being overwhelming

Thanks, beerbeerbeerbeer, for going above and beyond to give me the opportunity
