This beer is in the database under Barrel House Brewing Company in Cincinnati (which is now closed), but is currently being brewed by Elevator Brewing Company in Columbus.
Pristine pumpkin orange with a slim slice of ecru colored foam that should've been larger given the increasingly high-altitude pour. The lid looks decent as it descends, and lace is acceptable as well.
Pumpkin pie spices were appreciated as soon as beer splashed into glass. In particular, the brewers use nutmeg and clove. Odd that cinnamon isn't present, but it really isn't missed. Let's see how things transpire on the taste buds.
This is an okay version of the style, no more than that. It could use a bit more barley and the mouthfeel could be improved as well (see below). The bottle was manufactured in '10, so this has to be from this past autumn, not the previous year.
Lightly toasted-earthy grains combine with the spices mentioned above. A little caramel would have helped. Bitterness supercedes sweetness (not good in a pumpkin ale) and there isn't much pumpkin flavor. Several well-chosen tweaks might have bumped the taste score by a half-point.
The mouthfeel is too thin and the bubbles are harsh and stinging rather than soft and well-buried. No creaminess here. Time has helped on both counts, just not enough.
Elevator Brewing Company Wooden Shoe New Bremen Giant Pumpkin Ale (EBCWSNBGPA) is not one of the better gourd beers out there. It has potential, though, and is 'more malt and better bubbles' away from being pretty good stuff.
