Warm and tangy red brew. Quite handsome dark coppery color in the snifter. Adequate foam and plenty of spritz on the tongue.

Remarkable spicy hop flavor permeates the mouth. Some roasted malt with resiny hop notes. The perfumey taste makes me think of rye. Pleasant bitterness for the finish. Maybe the Stone heavy-handed hop treatment is just what this benighted category needed. Certainly a big step up for the Irish style.

Excellent quaff and loads of flavor for a lower-alcohol brew. On tap at the Kettner Street Company Store.

Brewed and enjoyed onsite at Stone Brewing World and Bistro and Gardens - Liberty Station. Poured into a 16 ounce tulip glass.

Appearance – Clean and dark Amber

Nose – Caramel, bready, roasted malts, touch of chocolate,

Taste – Sweet bread, malty, lots of caramel, red apple

Palate – Lots of cereal flavors with a mild lingering bitterness

Overall – Named after Stone brewer Brian Gallagher’s grand mother Madeline Madigan this irish red ale (Scarlet) brings about a rich malty bready character with tons of fruity and caramel flavors.

Recipe info:

Mash – Irish Ale Malt, C-75, Roasted Barley, Aromatic Malt, Acidulated Malt
Hops – Magnum, EKG, Chinook
ABV – 4.92%
IBU – 51.2
