22 oz bomber from CM poured into a tulip glass
A - pours a lucid ruby orange with no head, just a thin lace. 2nd glass had a one finger head.
s - first blast of bread and malts, second waft of hints of clove and wood
T - Interesting. Starts out very belgian ale-ish, then finishes with mild smoke and wood. A semi dry tart finish. Cloves and wood take over mid way through. Some fruit (pear/apple/cherry) notes as well.
M - low carbonation, semi slick.
O - Still exploring the style. Heard about this one through the threads here. Good way to show respect.

1 pint 6 fl oz brown glass bottle with unappealing label and branded pry-off pressure cap acquired at a local Texas bottle shop and served into an Avery stem-tulip in me gaff in low altitude Austin, Texas. Reviewed live. Expectations are below average given the brewery - whose work tends to disappoint and who may well be the most overrated brewery period.
When news of Matt's death hit the forums, many were outraged when I predicted on the spot that Stone - more marketing company than brewery - would find a way to capitalize on it (and I even predicted it'd be a smoked beer, ironically). Well, here it is. All dressed up under the auspices of tribute. (They're "contributing funds" to charities, but are they contributing ALL funds? See Framboise For A Cure for an example of how legitimate beer for charity is done). And no one seems outraged except me that this actually happened!
Reviewed as a smoked saison because the label identifies it as such (we'll ignored that "imperial" marketing nonsense). 10.5% ABV.
A: No bubble show forms as it's poured.
Pours a one finger wide head of white colour. Okay thickness and creaminess. Okay frothiness. Average retention - about 2 minutes. Little lacing clings to the sides of the glass as the head recedes.
Body colour is a translucent semitransparent orange-copper of above average vibrance. Clean; no floating yeast particles are visible - not quite what you'd expect from a traditional saison. Appears adequately carbonated.
Overall, it's pretty average for the style and seems a bit too filtered. Far from unique or special.
Sm: Way overhopped for a saison. Floral hop character, mango, bubblegum.
I do pick up on the cherrywood smoke, which is delightfully subtle and well-integrated, but does still run against the saison character.
Speaking of which, where is it? No subtle white pepper, no milky notes, no intricate Belgian yeast, no funky brettanomyces...this doesn't smell like a saison. Outright. It does feature some unsuitable pale malt, caramalt, and seemingly some honey?
A pleasant aroma of mild strength, but a poor one for its purported style. Alcohol is noticeable.
No yeast character or off-notes are detectable.
The cherrywood is nice.
T: I'm making the call - from the first sip - to continue reviewing this as a rauchbier. The cherrywood is lovely, with just a hint of smoke. It's not as harsh or ashy as many rauchbieren, and the cherrywood is an excellent complement to the Belgian pale malt build. It's hopped fairly aggressively for a rauchbier or saison, with plenty of floral character. Still, the malty sweetness helps keep a decent balance and cohesion, though the flavour profile never feels very intricate or complex. Average depth, duration, and intensity of flavour (though the intensity is below average for a rauchbier)
I like it in a general sense, but nothing about this suggests it's a saison.
No yeast character or off-flavours come through, though it does have some mild alcohol warmth.
Mf: Smooth and wet. Overcarbonated. Clean. Decent thickness. Medium body. Unrefreshing. Has a nice presence on the palate, with a pretty good weight for a rauchbier.
Not astringent, harsh, oily, gushed, hot, or boozy.
Overall, this texture suits the taste well in a general sense, but doesn't truly complement it or coax out its nuances.
Dr: A drinkable rauchbier and a failure of a saison, Burning Rosids is an enjoyable brew when taken outside of style conventions and features some impressively subtle cherrywood smoking. I'll have no trouble finishing this bottle alone, but I wouldn't recommend it to friends or trade partners.
I do think it's regrettable (and frankly reprehensible) Stone released this beer the way they did (and notice how they cranked it out so quickly after Matt's death - which leads to other more disturbing questions).
Stone's deplorable marketing tendencies aside, this is an above average beer worth trying, but I wouldn't get it again - there are superior rauchbieren available at or below this price point, and they don't pretend to be saisons.
