A cool story on the bottle,pours into a large tulip glass a clear medium golden with a amber tinge,man I love the color and the thick creamy shite head.After a few good swirls I pick up some overipe juicy citrus fruits along with some medicinal and spiced yeast notes.Yeasty and mildly phenolic with some clove spice standing out upfront on the palate,the some comes thru providing some meatiness and rich fruitiness,viney hops linger in the finish.This is a pretty complex and damn fine beer,RIP Matt.

Bottled 1/3/14.
In a snifter the beer was a perfectly clear gold color with just a tiny white head.

Aroma was smoky, fruity, and spicy. A little alcohol was noticeable.

Cherries in the taste. Smoke. A little peppery. A little funky. Still some alcohol.

Things combined well in this beer. Very pleasant.

A nice tribute.

Bomber bottle, bottled 12-20-13.

Pours pretty clear, orangy amber, off white moderate cap, leaves a tiny bubble sheen, thin collar and fine scattered lacing.

On the nose I'm getting some citrus, lite smoke, and some alcohol burn.

Full flavor, robust, complex,brash n bold. Not for newbies or the faint hearted. More lime and pineapple all over the palate. I get most of the smoke in the finish, buts its pretty faint. Mostly its more and more heavy citric fruit, phenols and a sort of burnt band aids under note.

A lot going on and I like it

Appearance: low carbonation, minimal head, clear, caramel in color

Smell: cedar, hay, and pepper

Taste: apple, lemon, tangerine, hay, light cedar and smoke towards the end

Mouthfeel: sweet and funky, light body, moderate carbonation

Overall: Very clean, complex, and fruity tasting. A nice sipper. I wish the cherry wood smoke was a bit more prominent, but this is still very tasty. I would get this again.

Light amber in color with a thin minimal white head covering about half of the top of the beer. Aroma of cherrywood and light malt is prevalent. The flavor is strong and you really get that cherrywood flavor. The aroma doesn't seem to give proper warning of the intensity of the flavor. The cherrywood dominates and grows throughout the fade. The mouth is fairly crisp and yet moderately carbonated.

Poured from a 22 oz. bottle into a Duvel tulip glass.

Appearance: Pours a bright and fairly clear golden orange with a moderate amount of bubbles. About one finger of off white head that quickly fades. Leaves a decent amount of lacing.

Smell: A yeasty and fruity Belgian style aroma with good hints of fruit and smoked malt. Upfront Belgian yeast with hints of farmhouse funk, clove, and black pepper. Big scent of the cherrywood smoked malt. Fruit hints of apple, pear, and banana along with a little orange and lemon zest. Sweet scent of candied sugar. Pale malt with hints of biscuit, grains, straw, and cracker. Hop presence is pretty mild. A pretty nice aroma.

Taste: Like the aroma hints at, a yeasty, fruity, and fairly sweet Belgian style taste with good notes of fruit and smoked malt. Belgian yeast with some good notes of clove, black pepper, and farmhouse funk. Good taste of the cherrywood smoked malt that is quite noticeable but not overwhelming. Fruit notes of green apple, pear, banana, lemon, and slight orange peel. Sweet notes of candied sugar. Malt notes of grains, straw, biscuit, and cracker. Subtle background hops. A really nice and unique taste. The smoke blends in well.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a medium to high level of carbonation. Juicy and fairly slick. Somewhat hot from the alcohol and smoke but its still pretty smooth considering.

Overall: A pretty good and interesting twist on the Saison style. The smoke is noticeable but blends in well with the yeast and fruit flavors.

Brilliant deep amber hue with a creamy off white head (looks like orange blossom honey). Fine carbonation in this one makes for some tiny bubbles and intricate lacing. Aroma great smoked malt qualities the label indicates it's cherry wood smoked saison, so far that's accurate. Smoked meats including bacon even though it just the smoked wood quality, fruit based ale really nice smelling Belgian style base beer. Nothing screams Saison on the nose, but the palate has enough spicy citric edge and yeast phenolics to make it all appropriate. Stone always struggles with Belgian styles, but this is good for what it is juicy fruit malt bases, spicy yeast, citrus zest, and lingering smoked malts this is one of the better Belgian style ales I've had from them...too bad it was bottled on the terms of such a tragic event. I definitely realize that life is too short, but what and the hell happened at the brewery for the brewer Matt Courtright to have passed away, it must have been a freak accident. Mouthfeel has a very appealing crisp yet bitter orange peel zest that lingers with the spicy yeast and spice additions throughout each sip, some would say it tip toes into a cloying realm but quickly backs out the carbonation is not as fine and champagne like as some of the effervescent Belgian style Saisons, which leaves a bit of residual sugars between each sip lying heavy on the palate. Overall, I enjoyed the complexity and different approach to a saison with the smoked cherry wood qualities really bringing the bacon like meat out in the aromatics.

On tap at 2014 Most Arrogant Bar Bash (Barleys in Greenvillle, SC).

Pours with a good white head over a medium amber body. Excellent clarity.

Aroma:herbal; too musty/ wet wood.

Flavor: mildly bitter and slightly sour. Aftertaste is a bit unpleasant. Hint of bad wine.

Feel: Good medium-low carbonation. Smooth.

O: weakest of about 12 beers sampled at this Stone event.

Usually don't drink saisons so maybe this will change my mind.

Pours a deep clear orange with a finger of head.

Smells very Belgian with strong yeast notes. Very similar smell to a tripel.

Again tastes a lot like a tripel, a little bit lighter however. A hint of a boozey burn but at 10.5 that's expected. Some light fruits present there too. Aftertaste is very complex. I get salted meats and cheeses somehow, very different from the regular flavor.

Medium carbonation, good lingering aftertaste that leaves an impression.

I was impressed with this one. I think I will start looking for saisons more often now.

Picked up a 22 oz. bomber of Stone's tribute beer, Matt's Burning Rosids. The beer was conceptualized by Matt Courtright, one of Stone's brewers, who was killed in a brewing accident in 2013. It's really cool to see Stone release a beer to honor the memory of a fallen member of their family. A great gesture by a classy organization. Poured into my Firestone Walker Proprietor's Reserve tulip.

Appearance (4/5): Pours clear, golden/honey-brown, and has a small white head, which reduces to a ring that sticks around for the entire drink. Plenty of alcohol legs on the sides of the glass as you tilt it. Looks really nice in the glass, though it would be nice to see a bit more head, though that may be too much to ask from a non-bottle conditioned, 10.5% ABV saison.

Smell (4/5): Lemon, grapefruit, faint sweet alcohol, and a little cherrywood smokiness. Some clove, wheat-like, and peppery aromas work themselves into the mix as well, undoubtedly a product of the traditional saison yeast used in this brew.

Taste (4.5/5): This beer is anything but traditional though. Right off the bat, I get huge cherrywood notes that ride on into the finish, most pronounced in the semi-dry aftertaste. The cherrywood flavor is not the kind of barbecue, liquid smoke-type smokiness that I associate with traditional German rauchbiers, though. The cherrywood adds a very nice woody sweetness to the beer; on further review, the flavor added by the smoked cherrywood would better described as woody, not smokey. Also unusual are the notes of dark stone fruits that I'm getting from the beer, though I'm not certain what is the cause–the cherrywood, the malts, sweet alcohol, or yeast. This beer does not lack for complexity, and I pick up wheat, lemon, lemongrass, pepper and clove as I drink. The beer opens nicely, as many saisons do, as it warms, and paired great with dinner.

Mouthfeel (4/5): Matt's Burning Rosids is surprisingly drinkable. It's clean and smooth, and does not feel by any means as heavy as 10.5%–but you know it’s a bigger than average beer because of the full-flavor and slightly-thicker-than-medium body. Carbonation on this beer isn't exactly where I would like it–it could be a little more vigorous (too bad Stone didn't bottle-condition the beer)–hence only a 4 out of 5. That's still very good though.

Overall (4.25/5): This beer is very, very well-crafted and really represents well the creativity of the man who brewed it. Well worth the 10+ dollars I paid for it. Check it out.

Poured a nice, rich, cloudy orange with a thin white head. It looks good, like a tripel, but not incredibly saison-like. Scents of fruit, apricot, some citrus, clove, some banana, and slight Belgian yeast and smokiness. A very complex, well done aroma that is quite pleasing. Flavor begins with apricot and fruit, some medicinal hop bitterness in the background and bitter citrus peel hints. The middle of the sip continues this way along with some slight sourness appearing while the finish is smoky and bitter with a bitter aftertaste. A good, strong, sweet, fruity, bitter and smoky flavor profile. Not to saison style at all but good nonetheless. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with moderate carbonation and a slightly sticky, semi-drying feel. A good sipping beer. Overall this was an interesting beer with an excellent aroma and mouthfeel and a good flavor. Not to style, but that's fine.

This one comes off the tap with a nice, creamy almost-white head about a finger tall that shows resilience and falls slowly during the session. The brew itself is a clear and brightly shining orange-gold. Lacing is dropped in solid patching.
Smoke is gentle but there, at a very nice level as it makes itself known without charging. A bit of leaf, almost herbal, rests beneath that, and then some earth comes out. There's a bit of spiciness, both kitchen and pepper.
The flavor lets the smoke build on the tongue, and the surprise to me is how much fruit is in the taste. It's got lots of brightness, and the way it works with the smoke is very nice. It has a slight tartness, some citrus flavors making some headway in the middle to finish with the smoke and a light lingering leaf. The way the smoke builds without ever overpowering, adding more tang, or getting acrid displays a mastery. Earthy and spicy play a supporting role, always noticeable without vying for attention.
The body is about medium, and it may have a bit of heft for a Saison. It is bright and the crispness makes it very refreshing. Smoothness isn't lacking, either.

Poured into a snifter.

Stone did a good job with the presentation on this beer. The color on the beer is orange and copper, and it's mostly clear and transparent with consistent carbonation. The head is a finger thick and chewy-looking and persists well.

I get more goodness on the nose, which is very citrusy. There's a lot of orange peel there, sweet malt, mild hoppiness and some honey. I don't get any smoke on the nose.

Then the beer hits my tongue and the smoke is thick. It's a big surprise, really. Very much reminiscent of the Schlenkerla I had a week earlier. There's the same smoked ham aroma, but this is complemented by citrus, particularly grapefruit, as well as some earthy, yeasty and woody notes. There's certainly a lot going on.

I mostly like how this beer drinks, with a good medium body, slight effervescence and a bitter and dry finish. However, the yeasty saison-like quality to the beer is a bit overbearing and somewhat commandeers the beer.

In the end, it's a unique, tasty complex and enjoyable beer. Considering the body on this, I wouldn't quite consider it an easy-sipper for the summer months, although it does have the traits of a saison which to me suggests summer.

22oz bottle - I'm conditioned to reading the long-winded back labels of Stone products with an air of detached amusement. Here, I feel the urge to go and hug my toddler and wife before the little scamp submits to sleep tonight. Back in a sec.

This beer pours a rather hazy and cloudy, yet bright medium apricot amber hue, with one skinny finger of weakly foamy, and mostly just plainly bubbly dirty white head, which leaves a few instances of streaky lace around the glass as things slowly abate.

It smells of smoky, meaty bready caramel malt, medicinal band-aid, cherry cough syrup, zingy earthy yeast, a fresh-hewn tree branch woodiness, a bit of indistinct farmhouse funk, further singed orange and lemon fruity esters, and some musty, leafy grassiness. The taste is fairly fruity - mixed orchard varieties - cherry, natch, lemon, apple, and orange, all - after having endured the cyclical forest fire season. Beyond that, the funky, medicinal, and gamey yeasty characters dominate, over a besieged semi-sweet graininess, and some typical, if equally baffled citrus and green hoppiness, with nary a sign of that 21-proof booze, huh.

The bubbles are quite understated, barely noticeable amongst all that other stuff going on, the body a stolid medium weight, and not really that smooth, so sorry to say. It finishes off-dry, and still overly astringent from the now usual suspects - it's like my palate did a bad, bad, thing, or something, or is associated with a certain M. Ghomeshi, eh?

I know this is a touching tribute to a tragically befallen member of the Stone brewing team, but I just can't get on board with this as a beer - the smoky character is much too much of that acrid medicinal sort, the kind that comes near to bringing up your last meal every other ill-advised gulp. Yeah, sorry Matt, but still, I hope wherever you are right now, you get to drink and brew whatever the hell you like (a bit like it was back here, bazinga!).

Appearance - Pours a bright, clear sunset orange with a white, near 2 finger head. Fair retention leads to a thin, broken layer of suds across the surface. Spotty lacing with little stick.

Smell - Funk and citrus notes hit first. Green banana. Light smokiness that increases as the beer warms. Also, a bit of Vick's Chloraseptic throat spray.

Taste - Highly phenolic, giving the brew a very 'chloraseptic throat spray' character to go along with a moderate smoked wood flavor. Hints of banana. Mild spice. Citrus hops come through in the finish ,though the 'chloraseptic spray' quality lingers well into the aftertaste, and is even slightly numbing. An odd, but original and, dare I say, likeable flavor.

Mouthfeel - Medium to full in body with lightly tingly carbonation. Very smooth for the size; I'd never guess this as a 10.5% beer.

Overall - Maybe I've just got odd or sensitive tastebuds, but this screams Chloraseptic spray to me. Hard to believe this is a 10.5% beer; drinks closer to 7 or 8%. In all, I'd say I like it, in small doses, but 22 ounces are just too much for a beer this strong and strange. I will say it's cool what Stone did here in producing this man's own beer recipe and dedicating it to his memory and letting us all get a chance to try it.

Slightly hazy amber body plays host to gentle streams of carbonation and nice legs. Thin, soft white head is rather disappointing when compared to other saisons.

Quite sour at first sniff... me likey! Plenty of sweet notes from ripe apple and pear with crisp honey lend an almost cider-esque quality to the aroma. Cloves and pepper spice things up. Light peat and smoke characters.

An impressive explosion of flavor. If you're a fan of the style, you'll know right away that this one is something special. Earthy wood notes (I can only assume its cherrywood) hit right away with a nice bitter profile. Plenty of pepper and other spices I can't quite nail down. Mild tart cherry notes on the finish with a bite that reminds you this one packs an impressive 10.5% ABV. Aftertaste is packed with smoked notes.

Served at 40 degrees, this one is easy to drink. As it warms more puckering goodness is noticeable, keep this in mind when serving (I personally liked it more as it warmed). Typical saison in most regards here; medium bodied, light carbonation, semi-dry finish. Not what I would consider a clean finish, but enjoyable none-the-less.

Definitely worth snagging if you're a fan of the style, you won't be disappointed. Even if you're not, you can't help but not be impressed by the complexity of this big saison (I'm struggling to think of another that comes close to this in ABV). I'm hoping I can still find a bottle to age in my cellar.... So if you see it, grab 2, just in case.

22oz bottle served in pint glass. Beer pours slightly cloudy and pale orange in color, alarmingly viscous for a saison (oh, right, *imperial* saison), with an ample white head. Fruity sweet aroma. Flavor is both more bitter and more sour than I'd expect in this cherrywood-smoked saison, but I guess that's the ever important "imperial" qualifier. My tolerance for Belgian funk is pretty low, but this is well within it. I don't get much smoke out of this, but there is a nice tartness reminiscent of cherry which works really well here. I will also point out that the strong flavors in this brew hold their own against the substantial alcohol content here.

Beautiful clear golden saison, with a solid 1 1/2 finger white head. Decent retention, fading slowly to a snowy white layer. Very nice lacing.

Tart, slightly sour, farmhouse aroma: lemon grass, straw, and yeast. A hint of wood in the background, and light vanilla and pepper, but I don't get anything particular to "cherrywood," nor does it come across smoked.

Tastes follows the nose, but here is where the smoke factor really does come in nicely. First, there's a Belgian pale sweetness: Belgian yeast, candi sugar, all on a thick wheat malt background. Noticeable alcohol esters follow, bright lemon flavors, and really strong pepper. Finally, a dark smokiness builds, starting in the middle of the taste, and building to and lasting well through the aftertaste.

Very complex, and very tasty; even the strong smokiness isn't overpowering, especially as it mostly comes in on the back-end.

Full and sticky-sweet mouthfeel, but it is a bit harsh at times, especially right at the forefront. Again, alcohol presence is very noticeable. This doesn't detract from the overall balance and flavor. I wonder if they could have simply made this beer at a lower ABV.

This is an excellent Saison. It strikes me simultaneously as a very typical, easy-going Belgian pale-style Saison, and a heavy-duty, imperial smoked beer. Really an interesting line to walk, and an excellent tribute to Matt Courtright. Yet another beer by Stone that is creative, original, and most importantly, tasty.

The color resembles a good IPA with its matte copper orange color. It's certainly not a clear beer, but not necessarily cloudy or hazy either, just kind of a matte texture. The head is only a finger thick and mostly nondescript. Not much retention and no lacing. Every swirl brings it back to life, but it's a fairly run of the mill appearance.

I think I like the smell, but it's unusual and I reserve the right to change my mind. It's got an extremely heavy dose of what seems to be a spice of some sort. It could be the cherrywood-smoked malt, but it comes across as a chipotle pepper-like spice scent. There is a faint cherriness to it, as well as a alcoholic heat. The smell leads you to believe your throat and palate may not survive the nuclear attack that possibly is coming. All the while, a funky saison like scent is lurking.

It's a mish-mash of flavors. The wood-smoked malt provides many different flavors masquerading as many other different flavors. Only the faintest hint of cherry is present. You can pick up the roasted malt, as well as the peppery yeast. It's an unsual flavor combination to say the least.

Like many saisons can be, the mouthfeel is strange. Kind of funky with lots of spice. A bit of roasty and some heat from the alcohol. Medium bodied. A tart finish with a pilsner like feel.

Overall, this beer falls on the slightly weird side of beers, something you can imagine from a saison. It's not bad, it's just got some weirdness to it. Again, something not unusual in a saison. Regardless, I'm glad I bought and tried this beer simply because of why it was created.

Pours two and half fingers of head on a clear medium straw colored body.
The aroma is light and airy. Smoke and floral. Nice.
The taste felt like a collision of heavy smoke and dormant lemon bitterness.
The texture is crisp with moderate carbonation.
It's a tough marriage of smoke and saison, which results in an aggressive flavor profile.

Cheers to Matt!

Pours a clear golden amber color, with less than a finger of head, little retention and no lacing.

Smell is nice- lovely yeast scent and a little bit of smoked wood. Nothing crazy but very nice.

Taste is a little more complex- there's certainly a grain sweetness, along with a yeasty funk and a little of the smoky wood taste. Finishes slightly sweet with a lingering woody taste.

Mouthfeel is nice- medium body, modest carbonation probably because of the high abv. This is a very nice beer- I think it's a great memorial to their friend and colleague. It's interesting but nothing unbelievable. I like it.

Update: this is unlike any other beer I've had from stone. It's by no means perfect, but I would encourage them to do more beer like this and branch out from the big bold IPAs and stouts. I think they have some talented brewers there and the results of such experiments might surprise us all.

Pours an effervescent gold/honey with a thumb of pearl white head. Very good lacing & average head retention

S: Pears, a touch of dirt/funk & a little bit of booze

T: Follows the nose, plus pineapple & passion fruit up front, breadyness & just a whisper of booze. More breadyness, tropical fruits & pears, with slightly stronger booze presence, pink grapefruit shows up in force as this warms. Finishes dry with a flourish tropical fruit hoppyness, pears, woody hops & dryness

MF: Medium bodied with spot-on carbonation, nicely balanced

Super drinkability, this one exceeded my expectations. I would buy this by the 4 pack if available. Compares favorably with Tank 7 in many ways. Best new Stone beer I've had in years

Bomber poured into a New Belgium globe glass. Pours a nice golden orange color with good clarity and a half inch of white foam. Cap is a bit short lived yet a quick spin brings it back quickly and is actually more lingering after some warming.

Aroma is more saison than expected after looking at a few prior reviews. Nice yeast character along with a subtle noble hop presence provides a nice balance and belies the strength of the brew.

Bit malty on the tongue but expected givn the heft. Enouth to mask the ABV to a degree yet without confusing the palette too much either. Firm carbonation and slightly sweet with a full body and a touch of spice on the finish. Not getting any smoked wood here but that's ok. A nice saison and dare I say the best yet from a San Diego brewery I've had. And an Imperial Saison that's one and done seems to be almost a travesty. Now maybe you should make a six or seven percent saison and kill it??

Does become not so good trippleesque with notabel warming. Jury is still out..

Bright clear orange with a rather large, contrasting, stark white head. Spotted lacing.

It's has a tart and lightly smokey nose. Passion fruit, orange, and phenols.

The smoke is subdued and adds and earthy/woody aspect. Fruity, bananas, and band aid. Light peppery finish.

Mouthfeel has prickly carbonation. Medium body.

I enjoyed this take on the saison. It shares qualities of a Belgian pale and the smoke was just a highlight, much less than expected.
