Consumed 3/25/14

Appearance: Crystal clear golden orange - more of a straight-up gold when held to the light - pours with a small, white head, retains a few wisps of a cap, leaves a few streaks of lacing

Smell: Bright, fruity grapefruit - fairly hoppy, but mostly it smells reminiscent of an actual grapefruit, complete with rind, flesh, and pith - not entirely one-dimensional, as there are some floral notes and some pine in the back, along with a very light touch of onion - rather unusual, but definitely interesting - absolutely devoid of malts

Taste: Definitely memorable, but not really in a good way - the actual flavor is a disappointment compared to the aroma - some grapefruit flavor, but it's oddly hollow - like chewing on a peel - moderate amount of bitterness - light touch of pine - malts are so delicate that is is almost reminiscent of citrus-flavored seltzer water - not what I would call bad, but definitely not up to Stone's standards

Mouthfeel: Light body, crisp carbonation, nicely refreshing

Overall: Go (back) To Stone IPA

Stone has been one of my favorite breweries for years. Maybe that is why I am a bit disappointed with this offering. In the past, they have produced some fantastic IPAs. This just kind of falls flat. They could have done better if they just watered down some Stone IPA, or Ruination, or <insert awesome Stone IPA here>. I'll stick with Founders All Day or Lagunitas DayTime if I'm in the mood for the style.

The beer pours out a cloudy golden yellow with a strong inch high head of white foam. The head thins out to a thick collar that leaves good lacing.

The scent is spot on for an IPA and doesn't come off as a trade off for lower abv. Typical west coast hoppy scent. Lots of grapefruit and some pine. Slight caramel and bready sweetness peaks out behind the hop scent.

The taste is well done as well, but shows off its session able qualities having a slightly thinner mouthfeel. Citrus and pine are at the forefront. Lively carbonation, but leaves me wanting for a bit more body to handle the hop assault.

Stone should get a goddamn medal simply for having the balls to place an Enjoy By date on all of their bottles. This one was fresh.

Fresh and hyped. Dude I know said he was hardly drinking anything else, since Go To was so cheap and abundant and excellent. That's the kind of statement that makes a seasoned beersman like myself go "pffft." Freakin' newbs, thinking they can find fulfillment through readily available, inexpensive beers. Don't they know the first and third rules of beersmanship?

But, I stand corrected. It's impossible to hate on a beer that's this drinkable and this tasty. It smelled excellent, though, since Stone knows how to put together a wonderful hop profile. And then it tastes excellent, at first, because that same hop profile dominates, but then it lets off considerably near the end. The finish is downright watery seeming, and so the balance gets thrown off. It's similar to other lower-ABV session IPAs, like Founders', only the front is better and stronger so the drop off is more pronounced.

While the flavor drop off is a bit disquieting, the hop profile is one of the very best I've ever had in a single IPA. So even though this beer isn't perfect, I'd still recommend it highly, and I'll still be drinking plenty of it throughout the rest of the summer.
