Bottled on 05/02/14. Almost four weeks old.

A: Pours a clear red with a nice frothy light tan head. Nice head retention but just the thinnest little bits of lacing.

S: Smells reminds me of....mosaic? It's got kind of an herbal, spicy, citrusy hop aroma. Quite floral at times too, almost lavender-ish.

T: Much stronger hop character up front than the aroma betrays. Lots of spicy pine and herbal qualities. LOTS. It starts out strong but actually intensifies through to the finish. Lots of black pepper in the finish with more herbal hops and hints of pine still floating around. Spicy and dry. No real sign of malt. It's a lightly sweet backing to all the hop flavors and mild bitterness but I can't even describe the taste. Bready I guess?

M: Medium bodied, spicy and slightly dry.

O: A seriously spicy DIPA. Not spicy hot. Spicy pine and herbal hops and even black pepper like some saisons. Too many to count really, it feels like they dumped a spice rack into this beer. Tasty and enjoyable but a touch over the top (Stone, over the top with hop character? Nahhhh)

Poured from a 22 oz. bottle into a Surly Darkness chalice.

Appearance: Pours a deep amber orange with a moderate amount of bubbles. Solid two fingers of off white head which slowly fade into a thin creamy layer. Leaves a good amount of lacing.

Smell: A juicy, earthy, and dank hop forward aroma with big hints of citrus, berries, and spice. Upfront citrus hops with hints of grapefruit, orange peel, mango, lemon, pineapple, and apricot. Hints of the elderberries and coriander spice. Scent of earthy and floral hops with hints of grass and pine resin. Sweet malt background with hints of caramel, grains, and yeast. A pretty good aroma.

Taste: Like the smell, a juicy, fruity, and earthy hop driven taste with big notes of citrus and berries. Citrus hops with some upfront notes of grapefruit, mango, lemon, orange peel, apricot, and pineapple. Good taste of the added elderberries. Some notes of the coriander come through as well. Floral and earthy hop notes as well with some cut grass and pine. Background malt notes of caramel, grains, cracker, and yeast. A very good taste.

Mouthfeel: Full bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Juicy and pretty oily with a drying finish.

Overall: A pretty good twist on an imperial IPA. The elderberries and coriander add an interesting kick.

Appears a deep copper nearly ruby hue with the elderberry and spice additions it leaves me thinking in terms of the movie "Big" where Tom Hanks is watching the presentation of a new toy and keeps saying "I don't get it"..."I don't get it". What's worse is once I try the beer I think the same thing I don't get it, who likes this spiced Elderberry IPA, it has a four average...that's fanboy nation ringing in guys! It does look pretty good creamy khaki head sits above this glimmering ruby bodied IPA, aroma gives out hints of orange citrus potpourri with the elderberry/coriander combo mixing hardcore. Harsh first few sips, onion/garlic hints of abrasive hops weigh in with a weird bitter spice sweetness, warming alcohol, hodgepodge of competing flavors caramelized malts and exotic fruit leaves me wanting to scrape my tongue. Mouthfeel is a weird texture slightly too thin of a mouthfeel for any Stone beer, carbonation heavy unrelenting again not trademark of most Stone beers. No more defending it ho alcoholic finish bad mix of fruit, malts, hops, and spice. Overall not a fan Stone, keep it real this sucks!!

Born 5/2/2014. 22 ounce bomber into Beer Geek Nation tulip.

Appearance (4.75/5): Beautiful burnt orange/reddish hue with an off white head. Hop haze, lots of soapy lacing. As good as an IPA is going to look, and I do not kid.

Smell (4.75/5): The first whiff of this stuff let's you know it's super fresh. TONS OF HOPS! Smell is of candied orange, very pronounced tropical fruits, like pineapple and peach. Not bracing or biting smell like many of the older West Coast IPAs. Absolutely no booze.

Taste (4.75/5): pink grapefruit bitterness right in the front, peach and orange hop notes follow behind giving you a good dose of sweet. With the finish, the bitterness comes rushing back in, but with the elderberry addition really showing up. This is what makes this beer unique: the elderberry flavor is quite bitter, analogous to the taste of an underripe blueberry, and it complements the bitterness of the hops perfectly while adding a distinct new layer to the beer's flavor. No booze to speak of. Not much malt here to speak of; all the work, flavor-wise, is being done by the hops and added elderberries. The coriander doesn't really show up to me.

Mouthfeel (4.75/5): Textbook feel for a Double/Imperial IPA. Medium carbonation, slick and slightly oily, but not chewy. Great moderately dry finish to this beer that is nice and refreshing. As far as drinkability goes, this one is astonishingly easy for a 9.3% ABV beer. The aforementioned refreshing finish and lack of booziness certainly contribute to this.

Overall (4.75/5): This is a really great offering from Stone and another very successful collaboration brew. This beer really succeeds in doing just enough different with the style without letting things get overly elaborate and therefore out of hand. The addition of elderberries is quite successful, and it really puts the beer over the top in terms of flavor. Get it while it's fresh, because right now, it's drinking spectacularly.

Poured a gorgeous clear amber with a one finger off-white head that quickly receded and left no lacing. A good looking DIPA, par for the style. Scents of citrus, with notes of lemon peel and lemon juice, elderberry aromas are also noticeable and contribute a nice tart berry-like quality. Tropical fruits, particularly pineapple and slight hints of mango are present in the background. A presence of alcohol is also discernible. Hints of pine and grassy hops are also present. A wonderfully complex aroma that is at once the familiar West Coast DIPA aroma profile of citrus, tropical fruit and pine, yet with a pleasant tart fruitiness added by the elderberries. Very nice. Taste begins with notes of citrus peel, pine resin and tropical fruit with a slight alcohol warmth and nice fruity berry-like flavors in the background. In the middle flavors of orange, pineapple and elderberries shine through, backed by bitter pine resin and citrus peel hop character and a more pronounced presence of alcohol. Finishes dry with notes of pine resin, citrus pith and coriander, with a faint alcohol warmth and hints of berry-like fruitiness. Aftertaste is pine resin, citrus pith and coriander. A very good DIPA flavor profile. It combines the bones of the style with a more robust tropical fruit presence and a nice alcohol warmth throughout. The elderberry and coriander additions also shine through making this quite the complex treat. Mouthfeel is medium-heavy bodied, slick, with a bit of a resinous feel on the finish, a nice low alcohol burn and a medium-low carbonation level. Quite nice, very easy to sip and very pleasing. Overall this is one of the better one-off DIPAs Stone has put out recently. It's true to style, yet adds some interesting and unique flavors that add to the beer's aroma and flavor profiles. Very well executed and well worth trying.
