Last year's w00tstout collaborators are back for round two! Thespian and renaissance man Wil Wheaton, online news guru Drew Curtis and their new cohort, multi-talented actress and comedian Aisha Tyler collaborated on Stone w00tstout 2.0, a massive yet seductive imperial stout brewed with wheat, rye, pecans and stone-ground chocolate (a new addition to this year's recipe), then partially aged in Kentucky bourbon barrels.

Enjoyed out of a 22 oz brown bomber with that distinctive comic book label art and a bottling date of 6/28/14 marked on the neck in smeared yellow ink. Poured into an oversized 30 oz snifter.

Appearance - Pours an inky dark walnut brown hue that prevents any kind of light from passing through. The body is crowned by a finger of dense cocoa powder colored head with a smattering of larger bubbles that burst to leave isolated pocking across the surface. Retention is low-to-moderate, and dissipates to a healthy film across the surface with a thicker ring of foam build-up along the sides of the glass after a couple minutes. A few minutes more and the film has become a swirling across the surface of a inky black lake.

Smell - Rich aromas of chocolate and dark malt dominate the nose, with hints of baking chocolate and even some notes of fudge. The pecans are also present, lending a nutty sweetness to the aromatic profile. However, I'm disappointed to note that the addition of the chocolate seems to have pushed aside some of that amazingly rustic rye characteristic that I remember from my bottle of version 1.0. I can't help but wonder if some additional time will allow the chocolate to blend together more seamlessly as the chocolate fades back and the grain comes to the forefront. The bourbon barrel is pretty far in the background and only comes through as a subtle oaky characteristic with some subtle vanilla undertones. Honestly, if I didn't know this was partially barrel-aged, I probably wouldn't have been able to pick that smell out.

Taste - I don't notice the absence (or really, overpowering) of the rye as much in the taste as I did the aroma, mostly because the chocolate really comes through and complements the pecan sweetness so well--it's like a chocolate-pecan pie. The bourbon is a little more present here, but is still far in the background. However, I can't really complain--I don't get any of that astringent liquor heat that you get from 100% BA beers, but it really allows the other ingredients to shine. Instead, the barrel-aging contributes just a bit of tannin to prevent the sweetness from becoming cloying and a hint of vanilla to really play well off the chocolate and pecan. The rye contributes a tiny bit of spiciness that isn't particularly noticeable until it warms a bit.

Mouthfeel - Full-bodied and viscous, with moderate carbonation that seems to work better as a counterpoint to the body than as a stand-alone element. It's just enough to prevent the beer from feeling flat on the tongue. Bittersweet finish rounds out the drinking experience.

Overall, just a really good beer, and while I think I prefer the original, without the chocolate, this one is good enough that people's preferences are going to largely determine which they like better, rather than it being determined by the fact that one or the other is a genuinely better/worse beer. I'll be interested to see how this beer changes, since I have another bottle that I may sit on for a few months.

A: Dark, deep, chestnut wood stain.

S: Nuts, bourbon, oak.

T: BItter espresso roast, bitter chocolate, prominent but not overpowering booze with a touch of sweetness, bourbon, and wood.

M: Sold body. Neither syrupy nor creamy; just thick.

O: Legitimately good. Good flavors, great smell. I hope Stone keeps releasing this yearly (along with the Espresso IRS).

Great bourbon barrel and chocolate smell and flavor, very smooth for the abv. Absolutly the best stout I've had in this price range and for only 25% barrel aged I prefer it to many 100% BA atleast double the price of this stuff. I will be buying as much as I can get my hands on!

650 mL bottle poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Black body. Small khaki head. Thin collar.

Smell - Dark chocolate and kinda nutty. Light bourbon. A little fruity.

Taste - Really nice. Dark chocolate. Sweet caramel. Nutty malts, especially in the finish. Bourbon in the finish.

Mouthfeel - Medium heavy. Medium carbonation.

Overall - I'm surprised how tasty this is. I don't remember 1.0 being that good.

The nose is sweet with cream, toffee, pecans, bourbon and dark fruits like prunes and dates.

The flavor is huge with raisin, prune, dates, chocolate malt, caramel, toffee, molasses and brown sugar. There is no booze in the flavor but it presents a bit of heat.

I liked Woot Stout a lot but I love 2.0!

Poured from the bottle into a snifter glass at the tasting. Big thanks to northstar23!

Mahogany red body, with some chestnut hues. Big thick oily top, but with some nice chestnut tan head and creamy even collar.

A mild bouquet. Nice light malt body strangely for barrel aging if partial. A good leafy tobacco note slightly and brown sugar, but quite tiny but decent.

Sugar action kicks up from the aroma, with lots of brown sugar sweetness on first sip. Sugary action picks up molasses easily, some cinnamon as well. Very light bodied almost wet, with a crackly dry nut and tannic finish. Good complimenting flavors together and fairly balanced but a bit of hard discovery for detection.

Overall a fun beer with some good qualities, but a bit mellow and hammered down.

My sweet hell. This is the Jaws of beers; it has Raul feeling like Ben Franklin...

At any moment - like said predator mammal - this sucker can bite! I mean, 13.5%, but it's all kinds of sneaky smooth!

So Raul keeps sippin'...

All kinds of grandma baking pie for Thanksgiving, with luscious textures like your girl during the first year that you met her...

Then all of a sudden, boom! Like Ben Franklin taking his kite for a walk! This sucker is delicious and genius (like said fore father)) but be careful with greatness, my children.

Served on tap by Eugene, Jerry the Magnificent, and Justin O'Donnel during Friday Night Flights at Party Town; Florence, KY (and it was rad). Very dark, viscous-looking pour with a finger of creamy brown head. Very impressive retention for such a high ABV, barrel-aged beer (then again, it's draft so...). On the nose I get sweet cream, vanilla, bourbon, oak, and a hint of spice.

Full body with a thick, oily, mouth-coating feel and a surprisingly smooth flavor. I expected some real heat from a potent, young beer like this, but was pleasantly surprised. It's very rich with flavors of dark chocolate, bourbon, vanilla, English toffee, a little licorice, some rye spice, and just a hint of candied dark fruit (like a good quad), but I'm not getting any of the pecans. Even thought the heat is milder than one would expect, you still get a good dose of alcohol warmth in the back of the throat. The finish is long, lingering, and fudge-like.

A really good beer. I knew I'd get to try this on tap, so I didn't bother to score any bottles. I wish I had. I didn't realize the distribution on this was so narrow and I know some other BAs who would have loved to have tried it. Moreover, I think a little time in the bottle will smooth out some of that heat without compromising too much flavor.

On tap at Pasadena Stone Company Store-

Big head of perfect brown foam sits on top for a couple minutes. Leaves a ring of lace way on top of the glass. This brew smells Amazing, I can smell it from where I'm sitting on the stool. Such a great smell of chocolate infused bourbon. Taste is near perfection. Dark chocolates and toasty malts hit you right away, then the smooth vanilla from the wood. Tastes like pie! Dang maybe jumping to conclusions here but it tastes like BCBS. Mouthfeel is so smooth very good at hiding the high abv. Just the right amount of carbonation here.
Overall this is a home run, and definately the best beer I've ever had from Stone. I'm not just saying that

Hefty on the alcohol, but really a complex stout. Great raisin notes. Just make sure you have nothing to do for the forseeable future before popping the top.

I had relatively high expectations for this beast. Bottle to tulip.

A. Very dark brown, near black, with dark mahogany hues at edges. Moderately viscous. A much too aggressive pour yielded a big-time fine bubble, amber head that very slowly retreated to a modest head. Some minor laces. A slick was apparent when swirled.

S. This beer is complex from head to toe, so beginning with the nose, you have a moderately fragrant beer. I got dark roasted malts, vanilla, coco, coffee, bourbon and a little bit of resiny hops. The bourbon is nicely balanced. You will find yourself with your nose in the glass half the time, picking out more and more notes. There is certainly minor notes of roasted nuts - could be pecans - and other flavors such as dried fruits, and freshly fallen leaves.

T. The complexity continues with major notes that move in waves. I got dark roasted malts, coco, coffee, dark chocolate , bourbon-soaked oak, tannins, vanilla, milk chocolate , marshmallow, caramel, and pie crust. What do you know - that's a KY Derby Pie. A slight hop bitterness balances out the other flavors. While this beer resembles so many sweet ingredients,but it is not sweet, just has lots of flavor. At this point this is a hot beer, lots of booze at the finish.

M. Sticky, smooth, high carbonation, and full bodied.

O. This is a heck of a beer. It deserves the high reviews. The bourbon is certainly apparent and at only 25% aged, BA fans will still highly appreciate this ale. The flavors come through without a sweet or syrupy taste or feel. Go get one, you will not be disappointed.

This one is a shocker!!! I had last years woot and was a fan from the start, but when I cracked the cap on this one I had no idea how good it was gonna be!! Wow immediately your hit with the scent of chocolate!! Roasty dark coffee milk chocolate and vanilla spill from the bottle.scent is crazy. Poured thick black motor oil just like laying underneath pops 64 chevy pick up and loosing that oil plug. Nice mocha color head that disappears fairly quick. Taste is amazing. Just like the scent but first your hit with the vanilla from the barrel then chocolate and the roast!!! Mouthfeel is spot on for this one. Overall A+ bottle of goodness. And for 10$ you'll be hard pressed to beat it. I'll throw a few in the cellar. But the rest are lucky if the make it two months. CRAZY GOOD

Seved in a tulip glass after chilling the bottle.

Aroma: Dark black, with nice thick tan head.

Smell: Toffee, Vanilla, Chocolate, and Oak from the barrels.

Taste: At first it is a little boozy from the bourbon barrels and the pecans are noticeable, a little bitter from the chocolate. However as it warms it gains dimension. The vanilla and toffee hints come out and the beer improves overall.

Mouthfeel: Very oily, it tends to stick to the tongue. Smooths out as the beer gets closer to 55-60 degrees.

Overall: Very good stout, would improve with age. I drank one and am keeping another for my cellar.

Solid effort from Stone Brewing. Good barrel character gives an already good base beer a boost making this beer truly impressive. If you on get your hands on this brew, do it.

Lots of flavor but the alcohol is overwhelming. Maybe it needs to age. The original Woot Stout was much smoother and less strong alcohol taste.

We crack a bomber, with an utterly soundless pour into our oversized tasting snifters. It shows a deep molasses coloring, holding a brief finger tall head of espresso colored bubbles after a heavy handed and rough pour. Wisps of lacing are found peppered indifferently around the glass, but the beer is otherwise silent. Carbonation appears light and sediment is absent. The nose is hot with bourbon and vodka boozy sting right off the top, but this settles nicely under shade of the richest cocoa and milk chocolates, warming and sweet banana esters, phenolic clove, nutmeg, and cinnamon spiciness, red raisin and black cherry, sticky fig pudding, heavy but only lightly roasted chocolate black maltiness, soft metallics of rye, buttercream frosting, buttery oakiness, toffee sugars, and graham cracker crust. The sip reveals a shockingly heavy beer, so prepare. The taste unfolds with salty soy sauce and black pepper spice, branch-bendingly weighty melted dark and milk chocolates, dark black cherries, lime rind bitters, pine bark hoppiness, red currant, buttery and mossy oak barreling, medicinal phenols, authentic bourbon booziness, toasted coconut slivers, black, caramel, and chocolate malts, moderate ethanolic burn, black licorice, and flakey dark chocolate Pirouettes. The body is one of the fullest and chewiest we’ve encountered, and the carbonation is solidly medium. Each sip gives substantial syrupy weight and pull to the slurp, smack, cream, and froth, all of which are present and rich. The mouth is instantly coated with the muddiest beer you could imagine, lasting forever. This thins after a while into a chalky dustiness, but you’d have to wait a while to experience that. The abv is large and in charge, but the beer drinks well below that, even for a big sipper.

Overall, here we go, round two. Wow, so the addition of that chocolate must have added an anvil to this beer because it is strikingly more dense and busy than its predecessor. If you’re not expecting it, it can really take you off your feet, coming from both that body as well as the flavoring. One nice thing about the malt base here, is that although the featured wheat and rye are hard to pull apart from the rest of the grain bill, it is a relief to not get killed with roast and char. This allows for the nose to really blossom, and the taste to remain pure. For a beer with only a quarter of itself oaked, those notes come out full force with warmth, adding a layer of maturity and candor. I’m not sure if we could handle a 100% barrel aged version of this beer, but we can only hope, urge, and pray that they would drop that bomb on us some day in the foreseeable future. This beer outdoes itself, and even many of Stone’s standard dark, stouty-type offerings. If you have access to this beer then drink it. Not tomorrow, not to see how well it does with age on it, but now. Right now.

First time with the "updated" version of Woot Stout. Poured into my trusty Stone tulip glass on my outdoor deck. Lovely night and a lovely beer!
Very dark, almost jet black appearance. Minimal lacing around my glass.

Aroma at the start (just out of fridge) was primarily a pleasant bourbon. As my glass worked towards room temperature, the essence of cocoa nibs and cinnamon joined the bourbon parade.

Taste was mostly bourbon, coffee and a bit of significant bitterness at the backend. As my brew warmed, the bourbon was joined by much more cocoa, pecans, wheat and coffee. Nice!

Overall, drink this beer very slowly and savor it as it changes character. It is smooth and moderately carbed. But it is mostly smooth and luscious. A distinct (by about 50%) improvement over the first version of Woot, which I also loved. But be cautious...that 13.5% will sneak up on you so drink accordingly.

I have one more bottle of this which I am going go cellar until end of 2014 to compare. Cheers!

Appearance: nice dark brew with a brown head

Smell: smell of roast and chocolate

Taste: definitely can see the diffrence from last years brew. This one has a lot more traffic and is a lot easier to drink. Even with the same abv. Its still more smooth with a lot of the same ingredients.

Popping a bottle open of WootStout 2.0. Pours a deep black color. A modest tan head on this one at room temp but completely gone in about 60 seconds. Not quite the head staying power of North Coast's Rasputin as a comparison.

Nose offers rich hot fudge chocolate and light anise. Also some mild herbal tones underneath as well.

So up until this point, for a beer I had really high expectations for, I am a bit underwhelmed.

But then...the first sip and oh my! This is something special. This is not something to chug, but a slow sipper. Probably the thickest tasting Imperial Stout I've ever had (and I've had many). Very rich and lots happening on the palate. Desert in a glass for sure.

Dark rich chocolate, not milky chocolate mind you, but along the lines of the serious mega cacao variety. Fudgy and really interesting aromatics underneath - a mix of sweet herbs that run through the olfactory emphasizing an enjoyable finish. Not a heavy carbonated brew, but I get a fizzy after effect as part of the finish.

Worth storing several of these for aging. Next time, will need to accompany this with either the DVD or vinyl of Woodstock for the full vibe. Nicely done by the folks from Stone.

A - Black. Can't even shine a strong light through it. No head to speak of, small cocoa lace rim.

S - Soy, molasses, booze, and a little cocoa. There was a briny note there when first opened but thankfully blowing off.

T - Chocolate big time, taste the booze too. Malt tries to keep the balance. Good thing about the booze, it cuts the malt.

M - Heavy body, pretty good balance considering, good carb which is hard to get on a high ABV offering.

D - I didn't realize it was so big. I was planning on drinking the whole bomber myself, now I am not so sure.

A-black color with a light brown head that leaves a thick lace as the glass goes down
S-bourbon is the main aroma, but you get a mix of hops, malt, and chocolate
T-at first sip the bourbon took over, then came a good hop bitter aftertaste then the bourbon taste comes back
M-creamy full bodied, sticky, highly carbonated
O-great beer that brings out the great flavors that you come to enjoy in a beer like this

Pour is almost black with a thin tan head. Nose is dark chocolate, licorice, a faint wood and hint of alcohol. Taste has chocolate up front with a kick of spice and a touch of licorice. The wood comes in behind, a fair bit of booze and not really bourbon, just boozy. Finish is a bit of malt sweetness, brown sugar and some berry sweetness. Medium to full body, moderate carbonation, chalky finish.

Bottled 6/28/14.

Pours an opaque black with a foamy dark khaki head that settles to wisps of film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, cocoa powder, chocolate, bourbon, and alcohol aromas. Taste is much the same with toasted nut, cocoa powder, and bourbon flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of roast and wood bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a very good beer that has a pronounced barrel aged presence when it warms up even though it is only partially barrel aged.
