Woo hoo! This is a special one.

It's black. Surprise. The head is weak, but the bubbles are fine. It looks appetizing. The aroma is mild but very complex. There is hops and malt and flavors like chocolate all mixed in the smell. Sweet.

The taste is aptly named - sublime. There is bitterness from hops mixed with chocolate (?) and roastiness. It's pretty awesome. The balance is perfect.

The aftertaste also has that sublime mix of different bitters. It feels great going down - not a hint of heart burn.

I highly recommend this and intend to buy it again.

Pours a dark brown in color with a 2 1/2 finger light tan head with good sustainability, that gradually recedes leaving thick, attractive, sticky lacing.

Sweet milk chocolate with a hint of caramel on the nose along with an herbal/over ripe citrus effect from the hop

Much drier than I expected. The taste is primarilly bitter coffee as opposed to the chocolatey aroma. Fruity esters rise in the back of the mouth, with herbal/grassy hops to back it all up. It becomes sweeter as it approaches room temperature.

Medium to medium-full in body with a light syrupy feel and light to moderate carbonation. Somewhat drying and astringent with a burn of alcohol.

Awesome aroma and a taste that definitely progresses into my optimal range as the beer warms. Another great offering by Stone.

Glass of Choice: IPA Glass
12 fluid ounce bottle

Eyes: A dense tan head collapsed and left a good amount of sticky lacing. Dark brown body… coffee coloured would best describe this body as it had a translucent brown glow around the edges of the glass.

Nose: The hops hit the nose hard: primarily floral with minor herbal traces. Very subtle presence of toasted malts… subtle may be too generous of a description here.

Taste: An explosion of floral and herbal hop flavours hit the tongue right off the bat. A weak backbone of toasted grains and coffee made up the malts. The brewers over at Stone nailed the balance here… just the right amount of warm, toasty malts to showcase a very fresh and heavy hop flavour. Medium-bodied. Moderate-heavy carbonation.

Overall: Excellent black IPA. A real treat for hop-heads.

I am not an IPA fan by nature - I gravitate towards the 'Dark Side.' This is the Skywalker of IPAs. Bringing the malty darkness akin to a Sith Lord with the tremendous zest of a good Jedi IPA... OK - done with the StarWars analogies. A very good IPA for us stout fans.
