Dark brown from a bottle. One finger head

Smell, citrus and toasted oak

Taste, smooth without defining character other than a hint of rye at the end. Sorta a weak barleywine experience

Mouth, moderate smooth, mellow carbonation

overall, yawn. My wife liked it. Kudos for smooth, cohesive flavor but nothing stood out. I graded it based on other expensive, barrel beer standards. It is better than regular beer, but underwhelming in barrel standards. In the last week, I've been wowed by Wulver and Pilgrims Dole. I guess the absence of this beer's alcohol punch in the palate is not my style

The previous reviewer who likened to the FW anniversary beer may be spot on. It's refined profile. I liked Southern Charred quite a bit more.

2014 series, 2013 arrogant bastard ale aged in Templeton Rye Whiskey Barrels. A small pop off the cork when opening.

A murky brown to reddish peach orange body color, with a nice creamy tan and thick two finger head. Manages to leave a good puck, with some good legs as well along the sides of the glass. Slightly clear from above with some clarity, but fairly murky.

Real nice nose. Caramel and coconut cream notes abound. Hints of spicy nutmeg and some fruit punch tropical hop angles. Maybe a bit of grapefruit rind sticking out as well. Thick, big and rich smelling. Wonderful.

Palate seems to wash with lots of classic grapefruit hop qualities. Good amounts of toasty oak here, washing with caramel and sharp hop richness. Tangy mix of caramel and bitter grapefruit. nice filling mouthfeel with a touch of wet and light body which is perfectly fine. Tingly mouthfeel and play on hop and spice which is real interesting.

A real fun take on a bastard variation, really dig this effect the barrels and process made, another nice one in the Stone Bastard arsenal, well done!

Corked and caged bottle. 2014 series containing 2013 Arrogant Bastard. Batch #5.

A: Pours a hazed dark amber under a 1/2-inch thick off-white head which fades to the rim leaving splotchy lace.

N: Spicy rye, dark fruits, faint citrus hops.

T: Rye whiskey comes through as does the slight charred oak, boozy, and deep grainy malts.

M: Full body and medium carbonation. Finishes dry and slightly bitter, oily, faint heat and rye spice.

O: Interesting. Not a huge fan of the non-barrel aged version, but this was a big step up.

A: Deep ruby/crimson with a off white bordering tan head. Always love the appearance of any of the bastards. That clear crimson body just gets me for some reason.

S: Macerated dark fruits, caramel, and spicy rye barrel notes. A hint of alcohol. Not hugely aromatic but well put together.

T: Sweet caramel malt, raisins, and toffee. As someone who drinks Templeton regularly, the influence of their barrels is very apparent. Not nearly as sweet as most barrel aged offerings, and it works in this case. The rye barrel adds a bit more spiciness than a bourbon barrel.

M: Medium bodied, with just a prickle of carbonation. Slightly dry finish accentuates the rye barrel character well.

O: Definitely a well made beer, but not my favorite QM offering. I love Templeton and their character is all over this beer, but despite this beers balance of flavors and aromas, no facet was overly potent/outstanding. Glad to have drank it but at the price point once is enough.
