Collaboration with Ecliptic Brewing & Wicked Weed Brewing

It seemed no single beer could adequately convey the collective talents of Portland, Oregon brewing legend and Ecliptic Brewing founder John Harris; Luke and Walt Dickinson, the brewmaster duo behind North Carolina’s Wicked Weed Brewing; and Stone Brewmaster Mitch Steele. So, this veritable triad of power opted to brew TWO beers. The first was a traditional Belgian-style tripel aged four months in oak barrels that originally housed red wine, then tequila. It was then blended at a one-fourth to three-fourths ratio with a freshly brewed West Coast double IPA to create this beer. A variety of diverse flavors coalesce into something more unique than any one beer our trio could have conceived.

May 12th, 2015 - There's a lot of hands on board making this beer, and I'm worried it's going to be a brew designed by committee. And in a way it is, expressing a chimerical variety of flavors The color is a deep, grade A maple syrup color, and the aroma is danker than the lot behind a dispensary with a nose scrunching hit of body odor. But the flavor has a deep sweetness with chestnut, almond butter and toasted sesames in its core. There's chicken, too, shoyu flavored and savory. It's a confusing array of flavors, but as usual with some of these experimental brews, it's delicious in the confines of a 4 oz taster.

I really enjoyed this beer; it was plenty hoppy, and nicely sweet. Definitely a re-buy.

Reviewed from (very long-standing) notes. Poured from 22 oz. bottle into an unmarked pint glass.

A: Very hazy gold, with a two-finger off-white head with fairly good retention. Average visible carbonation.

S: Surprisingly low here – caramel malts with grassy, herbal, and fruity hops.

T: Bready malts with a fair amount of caramel flavor. Some ethanol sweetness, and grassy and citrus rind bitterness. A lesser amount of tropical fruit hops as well. The flavors fade into residual alpha and rind bitterness with just a touch of sweetness from the malts.

M: Medium-bodied, low carbonation sensation. It seems boozy - more than the fairly average listed ABV would suggest.

O: Not anything special at all. Really a little disappointed, especially with the breweries involved. It's certainly not undrinkable, but I won't have another anytime soon.
