The beer pours a very nice copper color. It has really good clarity for an IPA. Medium bumpy head that clings to the glass nicely as I drink. A bombarding of the nose with hops. I like it. Great floral tones at work here. Fruity esters too. There are some nice complexities working on the palate. This is not as "over the top" as I was expecting from my first taste of a Stone brew. There's a really nice delicacy in the bitterness and hop tones. (The Rogue Horse Brass 25th Anniversary Ale was a lot more over the top in my opinion.) There seems to be a solid caramel malt backbone. The hop intricacies seem to work magic, because there are great floral and citrus and slight pungent tones all interplaying nicely.
Great IPAs (and great Pale Ales) are hard to come by in my opinion. This is a great one.

Presentation: Big 750ml brown bomber bottle, with a painted lable. Bottle in September 2001.
Appearance: Pours a sem-hazy orange-amber beer with a magnificent creamy, pillowy foam head with great head retention.
Smell: One of the most aromatic beers to touch my nose in a long time. Floral, herbal, perfume, citrus, pine, pungent, fruit, biscuit, caramel and alcohol spice are all present.
Taste: A tremendously malty beer with a sensually smooth and creamy palate. Rich and full-bodied with a syrupy texture. Malt flavours are toasted, biscuity, bready and hold a smoothed-in dose of caramel. It's not overly sweet, however there is a strong base of sugary sweetness that mingles around. Hop profile is indeed intense, not intensely bitter, but rather extremely intricate with grapefruit, leaf, wood and pine flavours that are fairly in check and balance extremely well with the bold malt profile. Alcohol is quite hidden within the malt and hops, however as the beer warms you can taste a slight spicy alcohol finish and you can feel the 8.5% assassinate your brain cells. The finish itself makes your palate scream for help with lingering reminants of all flavours and hop burps.
Notes: Holy ba-geezus! This is one crazy-ass beer! Over the top, like everything else American. Each year they up the additions on this beer, and being the 5th year ... well, just try it. It's a knock your off your ass beer, physically and mentally.

Crystal clear light copper hue. Steadfast head. Wow. Intensely pungent, citrusy, piney, obnoxiously American hop nose. The hop flavor is no surprise... intense and essentially a continuation of the aroma. Assertively bitter. Finishes surprisingly dry... I think there may be some malt there... who knows!? This is a hop lovers dream. Can't really tell that it's 8.5% by vol due to the assertiveness of the hops. Hop character overshadows any alcohol presence. Superbly drinkable.
