Just like its golden envelope-pushing counterpart, Stone Enjoy By Black IPA is intensely hoppy and should be enjoyed über fresh to experience its vibrant stone and tropical fruit flavors and dankness.

This double IPA’s dark-colored malt canvas comes from German Sinamar and from Patagonia Black Pearl barley, which adds a pleasingly smooth taste. The hop profile is predominantly Australian, featuring down-under wonders Vic Secret, Ella and Galaxy. Stone Enjoy By Black IPA is shipped immediately to ensure hopheads get their hands on it as soon as possible, as it is brewed specifically NOT to last.

Reviewed from (very) long-standing notes. Poured from a 22 oz. bottle, marked as the "Enjoy By 02.14.16" batch, into a Fat Head’s Brewery pint glass. Consumed on 1/24/16.

A: Dark brown, but remains translucent. A good amount of visible carbonation, and a two-finger light tan head that lasts quite well.

S: Resin and dank, melon and spice hops. Unsurprisingly, perhaps, quite similar to regular Enjoy By. But this does have a noticeable roasted and biscuit malt presence underneath. But it still doesn't smell as malty as I expected.

T: Follows the nose – dank, melon, and spicy hops. Big melon/spice presence. A dry roasted maltiness and accompanying sweetness, and then some grapefruit pith and tarry resin. It finishes with some roasted malt dryness and lasting hop bitterness.

M: A medium body…maybe lighter than a lot of Black IPAs. Good carbonations sensation, and the alcohol is noticeable but not hot.

O: Just not my favorite. The sweetness from the malts clash a bit with the hop profile they chose, at least to my palate. Plus, I still find that a lot of those New Zealand hops aren't my preference. It’s decent, but nothing I'd be in a hurry to repeat.

22oz bottle format – Large Nonic glass
Had fresh on release – 12/02/15

This was quite good and I especially like how they stayed tried and true to the Enjoy By profile. Delivers with such a similar hop combo punch of grapefruit, mango, white grape, gooseberry, dank pine, and mildly herbed spices. Both in the tropical aromatics and delicious fruit flavors. Main diff being a modest earthy roast char character coming in on the back side finish here. I would say gotta be one of the better Blacks out there now.

*Seems this one drops off fairly fast however as the follow ups I experienced were significantly less vibrant and aromatic.

Before I begin let me state that I am consuming a black enjoy by IPA 2-14-16 on 12-24-16, Christmas Eve. Yes perhaps it's a sin, not what Stone wants you to do, and sure the idea is to have fresh hops and being it is nearly a year old it should taste skunk and sour, well here's some news it doesn't, actually it tastes quite good and after consuming an unfiltered enjoy by IPA in its Windows of freshness compared to this out of date black IPA, the out dated black IPA looks, and tastes better but both do not compare to Ruination 2.0 and I'm sure comes nowhere close to Ruination 10 but haven't had 10 yet so i wouldn't know. But in conclusion I have to say Enjoy by is a publicity stint, tastes good after date and never tastes as good as Ruination but hey i still give nods to Stone because they are ahead of the game in hoppy beer and do make the best IPA's on the market. Now onto the analysis:

Poured into a goblet color is dark chocolatey black like a coffee stout. Nice malty bubbly head, soon diminishes to a thin white line that smears the glass with every sip. Right away I felt I was in for a winter's treat.
Aroma is malty, piney citrus.
Taste is bitter but not as bitter tingling as i'd like, perhaps due to its age but still delicious. Tastes of malt, pine, citrus, and coffee. Very dry and unlike enjoy by unfiltered it is a slow sipper.
Body is medium and dank.
Overall I must say for those who believe you must drink enjoy by at the date before the bottle says I have news your a beer snob, beer dork because this beer tastes mighty fine even being a year old oh and by the way I got it $3 cheaper because it was old and I can go back and get it at the same price. Cheers!

Saw this on the menu at Stone's Liberty Station/World Bistro and had to get a pour. If you like black IPAs to the IPA side, this one's for you! Nice roasty malts on the background, but mainly dank, citrus hops. Beauty!

Poured from a 22oz bottle into an imperial pint glass.

A: The beer is a deep dark brown color with a short dense off-white head that fades very slowly and leaves a very thick lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contains a smoky roasted malts, some chocolate, some coffee, some citrus and a good amount of hops.

T: The taste starts out bready with a hearty roasted malt character up front that is quickly followed by flavors of dark chocolate, licorice, citrus and coffee. Then a grassy and strong but not over-powering hops presence comes in. There is definitely more bitterness than sweetness but the balance is good for the style. The after-taste is slightly hoppy and slightly bitter-sweet.

M: Crisp and smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is very dry and slightly sticky.

O: Tasty, goes down easily, not too filling, strong kick, very good representation of style, this is a very good beer to drink for a long time if you’re in the mood for the style.
