22 oz. bottle thanks to mrpicklerelish.

Appearance: A beautiful, crystal clear mahogany. The deep red color of this beer was downright gorgeous. Small tan head always remained in some capacity and left a bit of lacing behind as I drank.

Aroma: Big wafts of spice and coffee. Deeper whiffs revealed toasted malts, chocolate and brown sugar especially as it warmed.

Taste: Up front, a smooth mix of spicy hops mixed with toasted malts, coffee and chocolate, something nutty and then a solid shot of bitterness that remained on my tongue for a while. Sometimes the bitterness outweighed the initial smoothness of flavors. It was very sharp and distracting at times and took away from my enjoyment. All in all, I would've expected a more complex flavor from Stone.

Mouth: Medium to full body with a tight carbonation that creates a nice, smooth mouthfeel:

Drink: Good. Plenty tasty. Not as great as other brown ales I've had but ok stuff. (949 characters)

Found a bottles of this at a local store. Was pretty sure this place would not have cellared them properly, so I was definitely taking my chances (esp. considering they were charing $10.99 a bomber), but I thought, what the heck:

Appearance: Very cool-looking body. A deep, deep, deep, deep, deep (did I say deep?) brown. From a distance it almost looks like a porter in terms of coloration. Pours with a half-finger head, settles into a thin layer. Lacing is markedly present and decently impressive, dissipating only after a while. The appearance turned out to be this brew's highlight, actually.

Smell: A very nutty, burnt/smoked roast malt aroma is the most prominent aspect of the nose. Unveils a big presence of toffee, a hint of chocolate and molasses, a little chocolate and coffee. Pine/floral quality from the hops are on the back end, with a note of alcohol. Pretty impressive for a brown, certainly. Does not smell, in any event, like the store I got the bottle from spoiled the beer. Yay!

Taste: Roasted malts. Almost a grilled vegetable-like flavor. Bitter espresso, caramel, prune, nuts. The flavor is a little more subdued than the nose, quite frankly. Might be a result of how the beer was kept, but considering I detected nothing spoilage-like in the nose, I don't think that's the case. Pine.

Mouthfeel: Smooth, nicely carbonated.

Drinkability: For being as old as it is, this beer holds up surprisingly well. Still, it's not a particularly exciting one. Considering its style, it has a great complexity of flavors, but it still has the brown session-like quality that makes it seem a little underwhelming for a Stone Anniversary offering. Still, in light of its varied flavor profile, it deserves a try. (1,738 characters)

A spectacular shade of crimson-bronze with bright orange highlights. The cap of foam is at least as impressive as the beer on which it sits. It's orange-influenced light caramel in color with a creamy density that promotes persistence and the deposition of a dramatic display of thick, tacky lace. Stone 8th doesn't look like any other brown ale that I can recall. In a word... fabulous.

The nose isn't quite the equal of the appearance, but it's still damn good. It smells like heavily toasted black bread sprinkled with cocoa powder and a small pinch of cinnamon. There's no pumpernickel spiciness and very little in the way of hops. Even though I'd like it to be a little more complex and a shade more forceful, it's better than good as is.

This is oddly flavor-deficient beer. There's a ghost of a brown ale here somewhere, but it never really materializes on the palate. The flavor profile follows the nose, more or less. It's toasted bready with a significant caramel maltiness and meager cocoa and molasses notes. Mildly spicy, not very sweet.

Things becomes increasingly bitter and dry within the course of each mouthful and the beer finishes a little hot and harsh, as if it was still young rather than being almost a year old. Like another beer that I had recently, the flavor sensations (sweet, bitter and dry) are much more apparent than the actual flavor. To be fair, there was more flavor with warming.

A thready dark fruitiness appears on the finish and a pleasant bitterness lingers. The beer may have been aged in oak, but it doesn't appear to have learned much from the experience. The mouthfeel is par for the brown ale course: medium with active carbonation.

I have a feeling that Stone 8th suffers from having been in the bottle for a year. I had hoped to hold onto each year's Anniversary Ale and review them on the following August 5th for personal reasons, but I now realize that that isn't being fair to beer that was never meant to be at its best at so advanced an age.

At this point in time, 8th Anniversary Ale is a slightly better than average brown ale that is drinkable and enjoyable for the most part, but doesn't stand out in any way (except for its appearance). My assumption is that the ghost-like flavor that I experienced today was significantly more corporeal in 2004. If this is a dweller in your cellar, open it now. (2,376 characters)

Dark brown body with a fading head. Nose is that of a bakery harvest deploying abundant rasin bread, almonds and roasted malt aromas. Rich maltiness provides caramel, coffee and pumpernickel bread on a roasty background. Big bitterness in the finish. Slightly powdery texture, lightly astringent though never disturbing. This one pours a hazy brownish amber with almost no head, which is to be expected I guess. There is almost no retention and only specks of lacing.

The aroma is big on roasted malts with no hop presence to speak of. I also got a substantial sugary syrup smell as well, with hints of dark fruit and wood.

The taste actually retained a bit of the hops up front, mostly of the earthy variety. Lots of roasted malts with caramel and sugar on top. The finish is very dry with a slight bitterness.

The mouthfeel is a bit thin for me with very little carbonation to speak of. As mentioned earlier, the finish is very dry.

I enjoyed trying this one though I imagine it's a little past it's prime. Either way, good drinking. (777 characters)

Pour on tap this past weekend at Stuffed Sandwich for their Stone Days celebration. Sam said it was a wheat beer, looks like it's classified as a Brown Ale here.

Pours a murky brown. More like a barley wine than a traditional brown ale. Light head that dissipates quickly. Smells of chocolate malt, caramel and alcohol. Smells stronger than 7.8%. Taste like a cross between a barley wine and a wheat wine. Very malt forward without the normal hop stickiness in Stone beers. I'm curious how hoppy it was fresh. All and all a good beer that I could try again. My local liquor store has tons of these still at about $4/ea and stuffed is selling them for $20 in the bottle. Might try a bottle and see how it is versus the keg storage. (733 characters)

Decided to crack open one of my 8th Ann. Ales. This one might have peaked...

Looks really good, deep amber color, with a slight white head.

Also smells quite nice, similar to a barleywine, with fruity baked bread aromas.

Flavor seems a bit off. Has a nice bitter and sweet malty front, but fades on the finish. Might be do to age? Don't know... Mouthfeel is also lacking a bit.

It is certainly still drinkable, but I had one about 6 months ago and it was better. (474 characters)

Bready brown sugar and concentrated black tea aromas arise from this dark brown liquid. The top succumbs to gravity in short order. An iron core of bitterness shapes and defines a candid mix of brown sugar, peppermint, coffee and caramel/vanilla flavors. The finish is clean with bitter licorice notes to flush out the mouthful of malt and alcohol. Very evenly balanced, yet it never quite manages to put two and two together. The sugars are clumsy. Alcohol flavors are unfairly obscured by sweetness. It tastes like its components, nothing more (at least they are quality components!) Very satisfying and, as always from Stone, largely flavored. (646 characters)

i just grabbed this one today.poured out with a very nice head.i think for a beer like this you should have a little,but not much head..it smells great honestly,and tastes great too.a little less hoppy than most stone brews and its nice to see a bit of a change from them.overall a very nice brew. (297 characters)

Poured from a 22 oz. bomber into a tulip. Poured the color of Hershey's Milk chocolate with nice garnet highlights. The nose was kind of subtle and vinous. Taste was big oak and vanilla and bready malts. Sweet but short of cloying. Hops are still lingering in this bad boy after 2 years...nice and complex with some good warming feeling from the alcohol. Tastes like an Imperial Brown Ale to me. Good solid offering from stone and a nice sipper but not something I could drink all night. (487 characters)

The beer pours a nice translucent dark brown color with a 1/2" tan head that fades to lacing. The aroma is good. It has a roasted malt scent that boasts of pale, crystal, and victory malts. It has a toasted/ nutty feel. The taste is decent. It has a rich malty flavor with earthy undertones. It also has a hoppy element to it along with a warm finish. It is dry and leaves a bit of an aftertaste. The mouthfeel is decent as well. This is a bit too thick. It is a full bodied beer with adequate carbonation. This is a good drinking beer despite it's flaws. I think they should have went a little smaller on this one, but it still goes down. (639 characters)

Reviewed on 8/15/08. Bottle courtesy of adrian910ss. Pours a murky red/brown with a small tan head. Aroma of raisin, dark fruit, with a slight hint of chocolate and roast. Flavor is lots of tootsie roll and chocolate malt, also raisin and cinnamon. Quite tasty! Only slightly past its prime, as the hops have faded.

Pours a very deep translucent brown color with some crimson highlights and a small tan head.

A thick, heavily sweet hoppy nose.

I went crazy for this one at the tasting at Bauer Wine. Not everyone was feeling it.. but more for me, right?

The taste is sweet malt, spiced brown bread, then a big puckering hoppy finish. Not my favorite from Stone, but a good effort nonetheless. A good drinking ale that works well with a scotch or two. (444 characters)

Pours a dark brown with minimal head. not much lacing
Aroma is malty, carmel, wood with a little fruitiness.
Flavor is mostly roasted coffee, with a little sweetness in the middle, a little bitter on the finish. A little alcohol burn is noted towards the end of the glass.
I have another bottle of this that I’m going to sit on for a bit, and then re-rate. (410 characters)

Pours a dark brown hue with no head, no lacing. Smells quite alcoholic with a lot of red wine going on, and some slight coffee scents. Some fruity raisiny things come through. Tastes quite like a porter or a stout- there's so much chocolate up front, then a wave of coffee, and some bittersweet espresso. Mouthfeel is okay but a bit on the thin side for me. Overall fairly drinkable, but a bit too sweet after a while. Still, it's a tasty brew, and the alcohol is fairly well balanced. (485 characters)

App- Mixing interestingly in the glass was a light brown with ambers/golds. Not a spec of head on it or cling.

Smell- Almost identical to Stone 7, which is suprising because of the difference in styles. I did smell more malt vs the soap on this one.

Taste- A really pleasant malty flavor with a small amount of bitter. A bit thick at points but a little bit of citrus crept into it.

Mouth- A lighter medium with a medium high carbonation and some sweetness.

Drink- Just okay. It was a bit all over the place with feel and looks but tasted good. Probably wouldnt want again. (636 characters)

22 oz bomber served slightly chilled in a pint glass.

Appearance: Clear ruby red topped by a smallish tan head that receded to a film of thin bubbles. Lacing was pretty decent.

Smell: Caramelized and toasted bready malts with a figgy sort of presence. British-style hops, kinda grassy and herby. Hints of pine.

Taste: Molasses, toffee and biscuity malts interwoven with low alpha acid hop strains I'm guessing. They provide enough to make this sort of bitter, though. Mild taste of booze.

Mouthfeel: Solid medium body with a lingering bitter aftertaste.

Drinkability: Impy mild? Strong Brown? Whatevah... an intriguing beer that most resembled a hoppy wee heavy. Worth trying at least once if you have the opportunity. Can't say I'll be cellaring this or repeating the experience, though. (805 characters)

The beer poured into the chalice (for some reason I thought it was gonna be a Belgian) a crystal clear deep amber brown. The head was low and tan, but lasted to lace the glass.

The aroma was deeply nutty and malty with caramel most prevalent and chocolate not far behind. Slight roastiness was present in the aroma. As it warmed the aroma became slightly spicy which was most likely a result of the hidden alcohol in the beer making it's presence known through phenols.

The flavor was slightly metallic with chocolate and caramel and the same nutty characteristics. The flavor also had a earthiness and a hop bittering that restrained the everpresent maltiness.

The finish was just dry with lasting chocolate, caramel and slight lasting bittering. The body was medium full but seemed just a smidge thinner. The only indicator of the alcohol presence was in the warming after consumption and even that was slight.

Served in the 22 oz bottle into a dimple pint glass. The color is a dark amber with a foamy tan head that leaves a nice layer on the beer. The smell is malty with a touch of apple to it. The taste is fairly brown sugar sweet, with an applish ester to it with a touch of a nuttyness and a nice dry finish to it. Mouthfeel is average. As for drinkability, have a few.

Well, been saving this one for a little while. While this didn't age with the best of them, it's still a nice beer and a very unique attempt (an 8% brown ale??) and cheers to Stone for the effort. Nice....just better Stone beers out there. (608 characters)

This beer definitely looks good. It poured to a deep brown and ruby color with a modest head, and it's leaving a few lines of lace.

The smell is strong but still very appealing. There's some degree of nuts along with the usual strong malts and hops. The mouthfeel is very full and very tasty. However, being so strong, the drinkability definitely takes a hit.

Overall, this is a good strong beer, even if it is pretty simple. (431 characters)

On tap at Stone Bistro for RBSG 08. Muddy red color with a modest but sticky tan head. Aroma is of oxidized caramel and some roastiness. Flavors of roasted coffee beans and light cocoa powder, maybe a touch of soft fruit. Not very robust. Easy to drink, light and well carbonated. (280 characters)

Very deep brown coppery color with a thick tan head that dissipated relatively slowly and left some nice lacing on the glass.

The nose is dark chocolate, alcohol, toasted grain, and a light piney hoppiness.

The flavor itself is like a boozey brown on steroids. The chocolate and caramel flavors come together nicely, and the mouthfeel has enough thickness to complement them well. The hopping is so light that it's almost imperceptible, but this bottle is also about 10 months old. If anything, though, I feel like the alcohol comes through a bit too strongly in this one. The other flavors have an interesting balance that could serve as a bulked-up example of the style without the booze really pulling through in the finish.

Overall, it's a fairly drinkable brown, especially at its ABV, but it's not my favorite example of the style. (849 characters)

The back of the bottle had so many multi-syllabic words, I lost interest after two lines and went straight for the contents. It's mahogany with a head that looks like fizzy soda at first but settles into a nice 1 1/2 finger head before quickly disappearing again. The smell is caramel, a fair dose of hops, and a somewhat pronounced alcohol smell. The malt sweetness at first seems destined to be balanced nicely by the hop bitterness, but it never seems to come completely together. The beers stays a bit too sticky sweet but remains entirely drinkable. This is another nice beer from Stone but somewhat disappointing for an anniversary brew. (643 characters)

Tasting 5-1/2 years after brewing date of August 2004. Held up well. A little cloudy, well, murky. Chocolate is the dominant flavor to me. Weirdly sweet aroma, like those choco covered cherries they hand out at Christmas in finer homes in Utah. So call it a good desert beer. So malty sweet, it IS the dessert.

Poured in a big Brigand goblet and the aroma is powerful. Label claims it's based on "Lee's Mild" tho I would say it's almost totally unlike a mild at 7.8% and all the malt. But thanks, Stone, for another wacky ale. (528 characters)

Pours into the glass a very dark ruby/brown combination with a thin layer of head that disappears quickly.

Smell is pretty light, small hints of caramel malts and some earthy hop aromas

Taste has a nice sweet honey, clove, and caramel taste up front and is followed by a very dry earthy hoppiness. Bitter, but not enough to overpower the malts.

Mouthfeel is very thick and creamy with a slight fuzzy warming to it.

Drinkability isn't bad, very enjoyable, but not something I could drink a lot of. (509 characters)
