Big ass bomber purchased at Jim’s Homebrew in Spokane a few months back. It’s been hiding out in my stash. Brewed with “barley, hops, water, yeast and a rather harrowingly glorious habit of taking liberties with the English language.” Hmm.

Poured a dark cola brown color that became red when held up to light. Virtually no head or lace (what little there was had a mocha tan color). Kinda boring looking.

The smell was typical for a brown ale. Where this one differs is that it’s sweeter than most. Very strong brown sugar and molasses type smells. While there's a slight roasty malt scent, I can detect no hop scent of any kind, whatever the label says. If they are in the beer, they are in a quantity that prevents them from standing out from the barley and yeast whose presence was also trumpeted from the label.

This is a little more interesting in the taste than in the nose. The hops finally make themselves felt by adding a slight dryness to the heavy sweetness of this beer that is especially noteworthy at the swallow. Otherwise this is a sweet malt playground that is only slightly mitigated by a background flavor of raisins and figs. In a strange way this almost tastes like an ill-advised attempt to straddle the divide between brown ale and imperial stout, with the emphasis on the brown ale. This could be an interesting tasting beer, but it’s a little too insipidly sweet for that to happen.

Mouthfeel is about right for a brown ale. Thoroughly medium bodied. The carbonation is definitely lower than it should be. Perhaps this thing is so loaded up with sugar the yeast isn’t rising enough. I’ve heard of that happening with breweries with little or no quality control, but that’s not Stone, so I think this was actually meant to be this way. Regardless, this needs a little livening up.

I suppose this is drinkable if you really want a dark beer that is massively sweet. To me, this seems calculated to appeal to some netherworld between BMC drinkers who are starting to branch out (it's too bitter for them) and hardcore beer geeks (it's too sweet for them). One thing it does well is hide it’s abv of 7.8%. Not particularly impressed with this, but it is drinkable in limited quantities – the limit being this bomber. Once it’s gone, I’ll have no urge for another.

Small dark cream colored head doesn't last long. Transparent cherry cola colored beer with no sign of carbonation. Chocolate malt aroma. Flavor starts of lightly sweet with hints of chocolate and tea hoppiness. Bitterness takes over midway through and is quickly joined by a rush of alcohol. It's pretty light in body which makes the alcohol stand out even more. Maybe my expectations are off, but I'm just not diggin it.

Poured a nice deep brown with ruby under tones. Head was tan and stayed a decent time. Lacing was there but didnt last long.
Aroma was roasted malt, a slight sweet maybe caramel smell, and a hint of hops
Taste was mostly roasted(actually more burnt) coffee mixed in was some nuttiness and a nice jab of earthy bitterness.
Mouthfeel was just slightly above average for a brown ale. Not too slick but not too filling.
Drinkability, while I could drink a few of these and enjoy them, I am not going out of my way to purchase more of this beer. Stone puts out better beers than this one.

22oz bottle dated 08/2004 and purchased at Liquor Max. This one is almost two years old at this point. Color is dark brown (what a surprise) and the head is short and white. The smell is a little chocolate. The taste is a little chocolate and then standard boring brown ale. I bet this was really good when it was first released but time may have faded it a little. I was glad to have the opportunity.

In honor of the day, presented my lover with a bronze choker with this one on 10/2/2004. 16-oz. pour at Sunset in shaker glass.

Film of elliptical, swirling thin head to start. Ruby brown hue but still slightly transparent with some light motion going on inside. Hidden bouquet of malt with caramel and juniper sweetness sneaking up at the end. Huge malt crunch with some roasted chestnut notes following at finish; some raisin and nutmeg notchings as well, along with some peat moss earthiness as pour warms. Lower end of medium-bodied spectrum, this is a nice offering but seems to lack something – there is a hat full of hollow in the pour that needs, somehow, to be filled, and this offering falters on that account.

I've said "sweet" a lot when talking about Stone beers and always meant it in that Stifler-meets-Miami-singles-bar-guy way. You might know it as "SUH-weet." Synonyms include "saucy," "nice" (see also NOI-ce), and "ughhh (ughhh, naNAnaNA)."

But 8th is sweet in the other, much more maligned sense of the word. Perhaps to cover up the smokey alcohol or perhaps to balance hops that are naturally out of proportion (being Stone and all), the caramel/toffee sweetness is first interesting and then just plain obnoxious, like the opening minutes of a late-night movie on Showtime.

This feels in the mouth like a mild ale, somehow, with half a shot of vodka mixed in.

The malty brown flavor is excellent and the hop profile of great interest, but it seems that Stone has used the 8th anniversary to merge all of their favorite styles (IPA, stock ale, and stout) into a hodge-podge that some might call a brown ale.

I'm not one to keep beer from breweries like Stone and Three Floyds and others stuck to BJCP style guidelines. Lee Chase and every brewer like him keeps American craft beer ahead of the rest of the world, challenging, revising, and ultimately revolutionizing the art with creativity and commendable spirit. But he, too, is faulted and this is a beer wraught with overzealousness, perhaps better as an idea than its actual manifestation.

Sweet, but deceptive and ultimately confused. Hm. I think I dated her once.

Bottle: Poured a deep amber color ale with a medium head with standard retention. Aroma consists of strong malt and lots of hops. Taste is quite bitter but well supported by the malt. I very much enjoyed this typical west coast beer. Now, I’m curious to try some other Stone Anniversary beer.

I wasn’t too wild about this when it came out so I decided to see what a little age did for this. Pours out looking like soda with a decent sized light tan head rising above the body. Scattered webbings of lace. Chocolate and a roasty malt made up the majority of the aroma. Hints of sweet caramel were also quite noticeable. The flavor starts off with a malty sweetness and roasty malts. Some earthy hop bitterness was present. Medium body and average drinkability. Seems like so far this is about the same with a slightly less hoppiness than I remember. Not bad by any means, I just find it boring and uninteresting after the first half of the bottle.

This beer poured a ruby brown body with a small whitish tan head that died rather quickly.

The nose was surprisingly subtle for stone. Biscuit, some caramel, a soft floral touch, wood, soft fruits with a full barley malt smell.

Full bodied with a very sweet syrupy mouthfeel. A very light carbonation with a subdued hop bitterness. Not to say it wasn’t bitter, but it just seemed to have a bitter flavor with all the high end cut off. Sort of like when you turn the high tone knob on your stereo down. Big rich syrupy malt with just a delicious big caramel malt taste.

Not really any crazy overpowering flavors in this baby. Just a simple, but decent, big malty beer with a somewhat numbing hop. Sadly my least favorite stone to date.

Pours a dark caramel brown, topped with a one finger creamy tan head, leaves rings of lacing.
Caramel, fruit and herb in the aroma.
Caramel taste, fruity with dark toast and herb notes. Very roasty overall.
Medium bodied and smooth, ok drinkability. Not very 'stone like' even with the high ABV.

Pours a chestnut color with a nice sized creamy tan head.
Big sweet chocolate and nut smells. Roasted and earthy. Caramel and a definite alcohol presence.
Tastes of roasted malt, tangy milk chocolate, nuts and a bit of caramel. A bit on the sweet side and finished with a mellow hop bitterness and an almost peppery spiciness. The alcohol was present and was a little raw.
Thin to medium bodied with a rich full mouthfeel and a pepper burn in the back of the throat.
The combination of the pepper and alcohol made this a tough one to drink. The flavors were good but this seems to need some time to smooth out.

On tap at Lucky Baldwins in Pasadena, CA.

Pours a murky dark brown with a foamy khaki head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Tiny dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, caramel, citrus zest, and some herbal hop aromas. Taste is much the same with a mild roasty and citrus zest bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a low level of carbonation with an almost flat mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer that smells better than it tastes in my opinion.

Pours a very nice,deep chestnut brown color. Malty aroma-slight hoppiness to it. Malty flavor-theres a slight grainy flavor to it. Slight caramel notes. Good body. Quite smooth on the palate. A decent enough brown though not my favorite offering from Stone.

22oz bottle. Pours a brown/red color with a small head that didn't stick around too long and left very little lacing on the glass. Smells of caramel malts with a little nuttiness and some hops. The flavor is very hoppy. Caramel malts for the backing as well as some bready malts, but hops dominate the flavor in my opinion. Finish is bitter. Seems a bit strong for a brown and a bit too hoppy. It's a good beer and very drinkable though.

22 oz. bomber

Very light for a brown ale. Poured a dark rubby color with a loose cafe au lait head. Nose has a deep earthy tone with roasted coffe grind flavor and slight estery sweetness and notes of brown sugar and caramel. Flavor was earthy but had some slight fruity flavors of cherry and figs coupled with a slight hoppy citrus flavor akin to grapefruit. The mouthfeel was slightly bubbly and carbonated, but nothing over the top. This seemed to me a toned down version of the Arogant Bastard. There wasn't as much hops but the malts were similar. Much fruity estery flavoring. Good way to commemerate the 8th Ani.

Murky brown color with a low ringed beige head and subtle carbonation. Malty milk chocolate aroma and flavor dominate; nice balance between malt and hops with a fairly noticeable alcohol effect on the finish. Medium-full bodied but kinda flat.

Way strong for a Mild Ale and not quite so special for an Anniversary Ale -- otherwise it's OK for what it is.

The 8th Anniversary pours a light reddish brown with a thin brown head that quickly goes to a small collar.

Its aroma is roasted nuttiness, coffee and chocolate.

The flavor is sweet, yet heavily roasted, caramel and chocolate malts with some nuts and a little smokiness. It has a dry bitter finish (grassy hops) that is at just the right level. The alcohol is well hidden. It is a little on the thin side and a little under-carbonated.

Overall, a fine brown ale with a kick.

Poured from a 22 oz bomber into a standard pint glass. The color is a cherry red and brown when seen through daylight. Nice sandy head that thins to a lasting half-centimeter. The aroma is of nuttiness, roasty malts and alcohol. Other scent notes are coffee and a bit of chocolate. All of these make up a nose typical of a good brown ale.

The flavor comes strong with roasty and coffee flavors. There is a harsh bit at the beginning that is a bit sour but that quickly subsides and I get mostly an alcohol and roast/coffee taste. The malt profile is very strong and the aftertaste is of burnt toast. The body of the beer is medium and the mouth feel is tight and clean.

This beer definitely looks good. It poured to a deep brown and ruby color with a modest head, and it's leaving a few lines of lace.

The smell is strong but still very appealing. There's some degree of nuts along with the usual strong malts and hops. The mouthfeel is very full and very tasty. However, being so strong, the drinkability definitely takes a hit.

Overall, this is a good strong beer, even if it is pretty simple.

22 oz bomber served slightly chilled in a pint glass.

Appearance: Clear ruby red topped by a smallish tan head that receded to a film of thin bubbles. Lacing was pretty decent.

Smell: Caramelized and toasted bready malts with a figgy sort of presence. British-style hops, kinda grassy and herby. Hints of pine.

Taste: Molasses, toffee and biscuity malts interwoven with low alpha acid hop strains I'm guessing. They provide enough to make this sort of bitter, though. Mild taste of booze.

Mouthfeel: Solid medium body with a lingering bitter aftertaste.

Drinkability: Impy mild? Strong Brown? Whatevah... an intriguing beer that most resembled a hoppy wee heavy. Worth trying at least once if you have the opportunity. Can't say I'll be cellaring this or repeating the experience, though.

On tap at Stone Bistro for RBSG 08. Muddy red color with a modest but sticky tan head. Aroma is of oxidized caramel and some roastiness. Flavors of roasted coffee beans and light cocoa powder, maybe a touch of soft fruit. Not very robust. Easy to drink, light and well carbonated.

The beer poured into the chalice (for some reason I thought it was gonna be a Belgian) a crystal clear deep amber brown. The head was low and tan, but lasted to lace the glass.

The aroma was deeply nutty and malty with caramel most prevalent and chocolate not far behind. Slight roastiness was present in the aroma. As it warmed the aroma became slightly spicy which was most likely a result of the hidden alcohol in the beer making it's presence known through phenols.

The flavor was slightly metallic with chocolate and caramel and the same nutty characteristics. The flavor also had a earthiness and a hop bittering that restrained the everpresent maltiness.

The finish was just dry with lasting chocolate, caramel and slight lasting bittering. The body was medium full but seemed just a smidge thinner. The only indicator of the alcohol presence was in the warming after consumption and even that was slight.

22 ounce bottle. $6.25 in VA.
