Smells and looks fruity yet tastes strong. An imperial mild, and given it started from a mild beer that makes sense. The bourbon and wood and roast in there understated. Quite good. Very good for a brown, peculiar for a strong. From a generous Yankee at Doug Shoemaker's court.

Had this on tap at the stuffed sandwich a couple months back and then again from the bottle last weekend at winter storm.
The beer poured a hazy brown/red color. It was more red when held up to the light. The small amount of head that did show up disapeared to nothing quickly.
The smell was kind of subdued but pretty nice. There were the obligatory brown ale qualities like the roasted malts and the sweetness. There was also a touch of caramel. It was a nice smell but it was mild.
The flavor however was still lively and potent. There was a little alcohol but it wasn't overpowering. There was plenty of chewey nut brown flavor as well as a small amount of hops. There was also some bitterness present. Interesting take on a brown ale and it isn't past its prime yet.
Wouldn't mind drinking this again but if I can't I still have plenty of other stone beers that I really enjoy.

On tap at Lucky Baldwins in Pasadena, CA.
Pours a murky dark brown with a foamy khaki head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Tiny dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, caramel, citrus zest, and some herbal hop aromas. Taste is much the same with a mild roasty and citrus zest bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a low level of carbonation with an almost flat mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer that smells better than it tastes in my opinion.

A spectacular shade of crimson-bronze with bright orange highlights. The cap of foam is at least as impressive as the beer on which it sits. It's orange-influenced light caramel in color with a creamy density that promotes persistence and the deposition of a dramatic display of thick, tacky lace. Stone 8th doesn't look like any other brown ale that I can recall. In a word... fabulous.
The nose isn't quite the equal of the appearance, but it's still damn good. It smells like heavily toasted black bread sprinkled with cocoa powder and a small pinch of cinnamon. There's no pumpernickel spiciness and very little in the way of hops. Even though I'd like it to be a little more complex and a shade more forceful, it's better than good as is.
This is oddly flavor-deficient beer. There's a ghost of a brown ale here somewhere, but it never really materializes on the palate. The flavor profile follows the nose, more or less. It's toasted bready with a significant caramel maltiness and meager cocoa and molasses notes. Mildly spicy, not very sweet.
Things becomes increasingly bitter and dry within the course of each mouthful and the beer finishes a little hot and harsh, as if it was still young rather than being almost a year old. Like another beer that I had recently, the flavor sensations (sweet, bitter and dry) are much more apparent than the actual flavor. To be fair, there was more flavor with warming.
A thready dark fruitiness appears on the finish and a pleasant bitterness lingers. The beer may have been aged in oak, but it doesn't appear to have learned much from the experience. The mouthfeel is par for the brown ale course: medium with active carbonation.
I have a feeling that Stone 8th suffers from having been in the bottle for a year. I had hoped to hold onto each year's Anniversary Ale and review them on the following August 5th for personal reasons, but I now realize that that isn't being fair to beer that was never meant to be at its best at so advanced an age.
At this point in time, 8th Anniversary Ale is a slightly better than average brown ale that is drinkable and enjoyable for the most part, but doesn't stand out in any way (except for its appearance). My assumption is that the ghost-like flavor that I experienced today was significantly more corporeal in 2004. If this is a dweller in your cellar, open it now.

After cellaring this beer for way too long, I finally found that perfect opportunity to enjoy. The first few sips led me to beleive that this is an American Strong Ale. I was surprised to find that it was intended to be a Brown Ale. If so, it's the biggest Brown Ale that I've ever had. Sure it has the chocolate, toffee, barley, toasty flavors. But it's also got a heafty helping of hops to balance, amber flavors for complexity, and loaded with brown sugar, molassas, cherries, berries, and nuts. The hops add more than just balance. A solid hop flavor adds spiciness and earthiness, while contributing to a lightly floral aroma. More amber in color than expected from a Brown. Full and rich body, yet remarkably smooth and drinkable. Finishes moderately sweet, and well balanced. I'm glad that I waited to savour this beer, but now I have a problem--finding more of them to drink!

Bottle: Poured a deep amber color ale with a medium head with standard retention. Aroma consists of strong malt and lots of hops. Taste is quite bitter but well supported by the malt. I very much enjoyed this typical west coast beer. Now, Im curious to try some other Stone Anniversary beer.

On-tap at Naja's
A: The pour is a sort of muddled dark brown color with some red and copper hints. The head is minimal.
S: Sweet toffee, molasses, and brown sugar on the nose with some hints of chocolate. Definitely some oxidation, but not really cardboardy.
T: More of the same on the palate. Fairly sweet and heavy on the toffee and brown sugar. The chocolate is bittersweet and oxidation is minimal. A lingering bitterness on the finish.
M: The body is medium with a medium level of carbonation.
D: This one has held up quite nicely, better than most of the other anniversary beers (probably because of not being an IPA). This one is still worth drinking.

Poured a rich amber with a slightly off white head,aromas of earth,nut and a little caramel but pretty faint in that department mainly a big earthiness.Taste is hardcore earthy and nutty I mean like eating raw peanuts strait from the field whoo!A little harsh until it warms to get a little caramel sweetness.A no holds barred brown here alcohol is prevelant thru out,maybe the dryest brown ale I have had to date very big and bold maybe too much.

Sampled 1-11-2007. Pours a very dark ruby brown with almost no head to see. Nose is caramel, pine tar, and nutty. Flavor is still there, though the alcohol seems to be peeking out quite a bit. Nuts at the start and as an aftertaste as well. It really hits stronger after a few seconds longer. Most lasting palate experience that I can remember off of just one sip. Feel is thick, almost syrupy. Drinkable for sure. Masterfully crafted and seems to still have life left. Never had it fresh, but this seems pretty good without knowing the difference.

Acquired via trade from Fishdawg71, so a big "Thank You" goes out to him. Poured from a 22oz bottle into a mug glass.
A: The beer is a medium brown color, with a thin off-white head that fades quickly and leaves a thin lace on the glass.
S: The aroma is very robust with roasted nuts and caramelized malts. In the background there's a touch of hops and spice.
T: The taste is malty and kind of sweet in the way that this type beer should be. Flavors of nuts, caramel and maple are the dominant ones. There's a mild hops presence as you would expect. The after-taste is slightly smoky and slightly sweet.
M: Crisp and very smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.
D: Very tasty, goes down easily, not too filling, good kick, very good representation of style. Given that this is a Stone beer and that it's a brown ale, I was unsure of what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised by how well this beer has held up after nearly 4 years for a style that typically doesn't age well. This is yet another well-made beer by the brewery that does it the best.

Appearance: Deep ruby brown hue with a succulent tan head leaves magnificant amounts of lacing no worries to be had here folks this is Stone in classic fashion. Aroma: Alcohol notes breeze by the old schnauze while hints of buried ripened fruit and chocolate notes whisp all around my senses along with herbaceously hopped herbal tea notes wow I'm in beer aromatic nirvana. Taste: Mild chocolate syrup with large helpings of hops very rare for any brown mild I've indulged in this is perfect for letting you know where it stands upfront and in your face in my opinion. Just a touch of alcohol and chocolate ripened fruit meld perfectly in the air definitely a beer to be enjoyed by the masses of good beer worshippers like myself. Mouthfeel: Medium bodied evenly carbonated signs of thickness coming threw by some darker roasts of flavor namingly chocolate and caramel wow. Drinkability: Excellent, enjoying life while at the same time holding this beer in high regards goes hand in hand thank you to the Stone folks for a magnificent introduction to why I love Stone beers awesome stuff.

Nice caramelly brownish hue, bright apple-red at the foot, and 'round the sides, flush with toasty tan head sitting tidily above.
rosy sweetness in the nose, roasty, replete with dark fruits, a touch of spice, plenty of malt, and just a touch of hops...bigger than other browns, but not as forward as you'd expect from Stone...cheers to them for keeping us on our toes.
Full, rich, malty flavor on first sip...great presence on the palate, candy-ish, but not to any extreme degree. Flavor is there with every returning swallow, mouthfeel is plentiful, body is full, but not too much so, finish is softly drying, and longish.
This is an anniversary brew to trip up some who may second guess Stone's mission with their expectations. These are those who may not find any delight in a brown ale, no matter how different it may be. "Where are the hops?" I hear them screaming. Not every beer can be an Arrogant Bastard, nor should they be...although the higher alcohol is peeking through, and this brown is showing how different it is in that regard.
(BTW, I'm attempting to read the label, and glean the intentions of Stone, sans dictionary...what the hell are they talking about? but I'm good at linguistic guesswork, and I think I can make some kind of sense out of it..."we're giving you a boozed-up mild ale whether you like it or not", basically...and i was very amused...wonder what an accurate translation would say? What if you transalted it into Klingon and back?)
This is a very good beer, just not intended to win the hearts of hop-headed beer-geeks. I had a similar experience last week, when Town Hall's 7th Anniversary brew wasn't a hoppy pale like last year, but a bold ESB. And it, too, was very nice, for an interesting twist on the style. So be it!
Let's hear it for the trip-us-uppers at Stone, who can feel free to dazzle me any which way the want...or not!

The beer pours a nice translucent dark brown color with a 1/2" tan head that fades to lacing. The aroma is good. It has a roasted malt scent that boasts of pale, crystal, and victory malts. It has a toasted/ nutty feel. The taste is decent. It has a rich malty flavor with earthy undertones. It also has a hoppy element to it along with a warm finish. It is dry and leaves a bit of an aftertaste. The mouthfeel is decent as well. This is a bit too thick. It is a full bodied beer with adequate carbonation. This is a good drinking beer despite it's flaws. I think they should have went a little smaller on this one, but it still goes down.

Tasting 5-1/2 years after brewing date of August 2004. Held up well. A little cloudy, well, murky. Chocolate is the dominant flavor to me. Weirdly sweet aroma, like those choco covered cherries they hand out at Christmas in finer homes in Utah. So call it a good desert beer. So malty sweet, it IS the dessert.
Poured in a big Brigand goblet and the aroma is powerful. Label claims it's based on "Lee's Mild" tho I would say it's almost totally unlike a mild at 7.8% and all the malt. But thanks, Stone, for another wacky ale.

Sampled May 2005
This beer sits a drab brown color in my glass, but shows pretty amber-ruby highlights when held up to the light. It is topped by a thin light brown head that is propped up by a medium level of carbonation. The aroma is rich and malty with notes of toasted bread, biscuits, chocolate and coffee. The aroma really is quite heady in its ample maltiness. The taste is rich and mouth filling up front, and then moves to that expected rich maltiness that is dominated by a mix of coffee and roasted barleys. There is still a bit of spicy hoppiness to this beer towards the finish, but it is quite a bit more muted than when it was young. The beers finish starts with a solid bitterness and finishes with a roasted malt astringency. The malt character of this brew is almost perfect, the only thing that detracts is the harsh astringent burnt grain huskiness. This beer is aging wonderfully and should have another couple of years to go.

Pours a lovely bronze and mahogany red color. A 1/2" head has large bubbles and slowly faded to a surface foam. A few slow rising carbonation bubbles streamed from the bottom of the glass.
The aroma is of caramel and floral hops. The flavor sports many tones as the drink warms, such as roasted malts, caramel candy, grapefruit, chocolate,prunes, raisins, nuts, and a big hop character.
Smooth and mildly crisp at the start, smooth through the finish. Alcohol is mildly noticeable. Nicely drinkable and a very pleasant brew everyone should seek out.

01/08/05- Purchased at Beverages and More in San Mateo, CA
Presentation- Poured into my Hangtown Brewery pint glass. 22 oz bomber with no date on bottle.
Appearance- Pours a brownish-amber color with a nice tan foamy head. Lacing is about average.
Smell- Tons of caramel and roasted malt notes as well as hop bitterness.
Taste- This one kinda reminds me of a brown ale mixed with an IPA and maybe even some stout or porteresque qualities. Definite strong brown ale tastes with the roasted malt, IPA qaulities with the smooth bitter hops, and the darker beer qualities with a tad taste of burnt coffee. Excellent!
Mouthfeel- Lower carbonation than I was expecting. Medium to heavy taste. Went down super smooth.
Drinkability- May be my favorite brown ale to date. An interesting taste experience. Wondering if this one is ageable at 7.8%?

Ruby-brow body with tan head. Retention is so-so, but he beer itself looks great. Rich fruity/roasty smell with a note of alcohol as it warms up. Almost a little spicey too. Nice taste, hard to distingish though. Sweet dark malts with a toffee, caramel and a slight roasted note. Not chewy and not too thin. Feels ust riht going down but 22 oz. is enough with dinner. Heck of a brown ale, give it a try.

Brown ale Stone style! Is there such a thing as a double brown ale?
This one seems to fit the bill. Pours dark brown and clear, thin tan head, light lacing. This is thick, full bodied stuff. Alcohol present in the nose. Rich, deep and tasty malt center. Sweetness, balanced by a subtle dry hoppynesss. Lucious and large, chocolate flavors come out as it warms in the glass. Deeply satisfying, strong and bold. Another winner from Stone.

Tried this earlier in 2008 at a BA tasting at the Brick Store Pub compliments of an unknown BA- Thanks to whoever brought this! Poured a hazy brown with a still lively head that faded to a thin ring. Smells treacly with some aromas of date and fig. The taste is similar, but still quite rich with date and fig fflavors and slight roastiness that provides a toast like backbone for the fruit. Very smooth and creamy, this is still holding up quite well with no oxiddised flavors detected at all. Nice.

Pours an light brown, two-finger head, fades slowly and leaves a good lace. Medium carbonation and medium bodied. Deep, rich amber color. Malty nose. Starts with a light sweetness and finishes smooth with just a hint of hoppiness. A very good brown. $6.00 for a 22oz bottle from Colonial Spirits Acton, MA.

Pours a chill hazy red brown ale.
Smell is malty and syrupy like, smells like a barley wine. Fruity scents and roasted malt is in the scent too. Clear scents of chocolate and coffee appear after this warms up a bit.
Taste is strong and just a little sweet. Malt and the hops fight it out in your mouth in this brew. Bitterness, pine and grapefruit tastes jump out at you on first taste and then hide again as the malt and roasted flavor dominate the aftertaste. Alcohol becomes discernable after is warms a bit and leaves a drier aftertaste.
Mouthfeel is good.
A nice drinkable brew.
