On tap at Lucky Baldwins in Pasadena, CA.

Pours a hazy light orange with a foamy orange-tan head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Small streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, citrus fruit, citrus zest, and some slight perfume-like aromas. Taste is much the same with a brown sugar flavor as well. There is a mild hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer that is tasty and easy to drink.

Had this one a long, long time. Figure I may as well drink it on a hot summer day.

Golden body. Finger of creamy white head.

Nose is a bit stale. Over-sweet malt and hops that once were...

Flavor is still pretty good. Strong but smooth. Marshmallow malt, light citrus, a little spiciness. Interesting blend of flavors.

Mouthfeel is solid, slick, low to moderate carb.

Overall, this is still a solid strong ale. I know that Stone was going for something lighter than their usual anniversary IPA with this one. They succeeded, but I wish I knew what it tasted like when fresh.

Draft to 4oz Taster

WinterStorm 2012

App- A caramel brown with ambers and orange intermixed. A small 1/8" head of small tan head and zero cling.

Smell- Smelled just like a BW. Big malts with a lot of citrus and very smooth aromatics.

Taste- A bit of a good mix. Malty, spicy, and very DIPA like fruits. A bit peppery.

Mouth- A good medium bodty with a medium carbonation level. A good malty and citrus residual flavor.

Drink- I enjoyed this. Strong ales are pretty hard to mess up. This one was just a touch old for me.

Found a few of these at a bottle shop in Thousand Oaks (CA), they looked to have a lot of sediment, but I went for them anyway.
Served in a Duvel tulip from the 22oz bottle.

A – A golden orange color, getting close to cooper but not that dark. The beer was very cloudy also, but I wasn’t scared, I was more intrigued. Had a decent off white head that held its retention very well, but wasn’t lacing like other Stone beers.

S – Pine, citrus and a little grass hop smell, shocking because this beer is 6 years old and I was expecting all of the hop smells to have dissipated. There was a mild malt sent also, but also a booze smell, light a higher alcohol content beer.

T – This had a strong alcohol flavor, but doesn’t downplay the rest of what’s going on, a lot of bitterness, some citrus hops, and some floral hops. There was a very mild malt flavor, but it was overshadowed by the hops and the booziness.

M – Good carbonation, which I wasn’t surprised about. Very medium in the body.

O – I never had this fresh, heck I wasn’t even into craft beer 6 years ago. So I have nothing to compare this to. I was impressed at how much of the hop flavor is still present in this beer and it hasn’t gone the path of a barleywine. All in all I am impressed, and for calling this a Wheat IPA (read from the Stone book that’s just been released) I see nothing wheaty about this.

22 oz. bomber picked up at Mr. Kegs, looks like Stone sent them a case, bottled 9/2005, when I was 20,

A: Pours a clear light amber with a medium frothy white head, solid retention, no real lace.

S: Aged malt character, fermented lemons and oranges, still a really lovely smell.

T: Orange and pink grapefruit from the hops. A very light malt component is still there. I can see it's close to its last legs. Tastes thin, although a nice flavour for sure.

M: Still a nice vibrant carbonation, spritzy and biting. Oily. Medium-bodied overall.

O: Having had this in 2006 I can try to make some kind of a comparison. Though listed as an ASA this is really an IPA at heart, so it's impressive that it's held up as good as it has. Unfortunately it doesn't have the malt component to make it really interesting at 6 years. If you have any bottles drink them now, I don't see them getting better.
