A- 1/4" light tan head. Clear amber body with bit of orange. Thin collar with lacing sticking to the side. Thin lacing covering the top.
S- Some citrus hops and alcohol. Has a nice malt balance in it also. Maybe a bit of bread too. Caramel malts and a light bit of toffee.
T- A nice big bitterness really cuts through right off the bat with alcohol following the path. The big malt follows the alcohol. Comes through as a nice caramel malt right off then kind of changes to a toffee malt as it sits there for a second or two. A light bread is still there like the 05 also. This one seems a bit stronger flavors (my guess is that extra year on the 05 helped it). Think this in a year though will be a bit weaker than the 05 today. They are very similar (same recipe just different breweries) but I think the 05 is a bit better. Better blended but still strong as this is very separate and strong but a bit weaker once the hops die down.
M- Medium body with medium carbonation and maybe a bit cloggy.
D- Like I said I think the 05 is a bit better but this is a very nice beer. Would like to see if it could hold its strength though once the hops have died down (IMO I don't think it will be able too).

This is my last review for the drinking a new year day after day (give or take a day or two). Overall the ones that stick out the most are the 2000 (by far) 02 and 05. I think the ones that arn't worth buying again (as of now) are 01 (I know 00 and 01 are same recipe but they do taste quite a bit different) and 06 (it is young). The 04 and 03 are good but nothing that will really make a big statement. Come Christmas eve I will be able to try the 99.

Yum yum.

Finally opened up my first bottle from the latest round of Old Guardians at poker the other night...

Pours a slightly viscous rich, bronze/amber with shiny copper tones. Head is a bit thin, but the lacing holds.

Gives off a faintly sweet aroma of brown sugar and malt, vague hints of sweet citrus fruit and vanilla, almost molasses, but nothing quite that rich.

Whoops! Strike the "nothing quite that rich," this baby packs a wallop! Alcohol is noticeable if not quite predominant in a delicious warmth. Hits with a burst of that brown sugar sweetness, vanilla is again noticeable, fruit notes seem more ripe fruit than citrus now. Which is a big leap, I know. What would be described as a bracing hop bitterness elsewhere really just barely starts to even things out on the back end. There's some citrus and spice to the bite, but it definitely doesn't leave one's mouth dry. No sickly sweetness left on the tongue, this definitely has you coming back for more. Feel is rich and incredibly smooth with just enough carbonation to liven up the party. Flat, and this wouldn't be suitable except in a port glass.

Another outstanding Stone creation.

Presentation: 22 oz bottle, poured in glass chalice

Appearance: Seems to glow! Shimmers of orange and yellow Thick lacing that hangs around for a good while. More than any Barleywine ive seen to-date.

Smell: Nothing out of ordinary as far as barleywines go. n

Taste: As with most of Stone's lineup, theres nothing mild here, but behind the strong taste, theres lots of subtle flavors. Is it wheat, burnt nut, clove or anise, caramel? Hard to put ones finger on all the flavors.

Mouthfeel: Satisfying! Makes you feel like your really drinking something with some substance. Alcohol tingle warms ya without the burn. Makes your mouth water more than a bit a few minutes later

Drinkabilty: Another good one from Stone. I could sip on this one all night. I'd like to put a bottle of this aside to see how it compares to next years...dont think i could resist opening em though.

I haven't really been into many barleywines recently, but, tis the season I suppose. I always regret not getting the good ones when they come out. This is one of those good ones. Pours a ruddy applejuice color, with hints of red shining through. A short lived head is present, and is about all you can expect from a barleywine. I am amazed by the clarity though. As bright and clear as a nice German pilsner, only red. Really fruity and lively in the nose, full of raisins, prunes, whifs of alcohol, and a big raw maltiness. Not too much of a strong hop profile, but some citrussy notes show thier face. Taste is not as aggressive as your average Stone brew, but more refined, and toned down by en excellent, chewy mouthfeel. More on that later. Sweet, in a word. Very similar to the smell, plenty of raisiny, gooey, fruit-snack notes and a big malt character. Some subtle vanilla as it warms, and a soft and sleepy boozy quality to this one, not harsh in the least. A nice bitterness pops up at the end, just enough for somewhat of a balance, but it's more of an afterthought. Surprisingly, this isn't a very hoppy beer, overall. But the thing that ties this beer together is the eat-it-with-a-fork mouthfeel. Full bodied, super slow and chewy on the palate. Manages not to come across as syrupy however, which is important. Refreshing to see a barleywine that doesn't have a chip on it's shoulder or something to proove, especially from Stone. Very refined, very soft and complex, but energetic. Not frenetic or all over this place. Hmmm I did just notice that this beer is 11.26%... I suppose that might contradict my last few sentences, but not in this case. This beer doesn't drink like an ass-kicker. The perfect beer for the first warm day of the upcoming spring season.

Pours an amber color with copper highlights, and a two finger head that slowly disappates to a small ring around the glass, and no lacing.

Smell is dominated by floral and grassy hops. Small amounts of malty sweetness are also present.

The flavor at first is strickly hops, but after further sipping, shows a nice balance between floral hops and malt. The malt is prevalant on the mid-palate, but is overwhelmed by hoppy bitterness on the finish. A pleasant alcohol warming lingers for a while after your last sip.

Mouthfeel is full, but somewhat astringent. Slightly more carbonated than other barleywines. Drinkablility is good, but slow due to the high alcohol.

Good overall, but not quite as good as a few of Stone's other offerings. Perhaps this is due to the new brewery? Either way, I'll be curious to see how this develops in a year or two in the cellar.

*22oz bottle served at room temp into a tulip glass.

Pours a brass color with some reddish/ruby undertones to it. Head is tan, fizzy, dissipating edge layer. Clean apprearance.

Pretty hoppy nose. A bit of alcohol and oak aroma as well. I also detect just a bit of vanilla and caramel. Decent.

Sipping reveals a sweet vanilla & fruit beginning. The sweetness gives way to an overwhelming bitter hops flavor and a bunch of alcohol burning my palate to all hell. Oak drying flavor due to the alcohol.

Tingly carbonation gives way to a huge full body including lots of warming and drying from the alcohol. Fun actually. Starts mild, but then kicks your rear end!

Overall, I am excited to drink teh whole bottle ALLL ALONE! I'd love to try other years, and I should probably get another bottle and hold onto it for a few years also. Yummy!

A- Dark amber copper, a little cloudy. Big white head, very good retention and fantastic lace.
S- Carmel malt, biscuit malt. Alcohol carries a raisony smell and tripical fruit, nothing earth shattering here.
T-Great big malts, carmel, mollasses. After the swallow a great big dose of green hop bite comes through. The bitterness lingers quite long.
M-Creamy medium to fill body, mild nice carbonation
D-Drinkable for such a high ABV, but this is still the limiting factor.

Had lunch at deep ellum this afternoon before work. Had great selections on tap and this one I could not pass up.

The tap poured a color mixed of orange and amber, pretty creamy head that eventually withers down.

Could both taste and smell the alchohol in this one. Very nice aroma that consists of some grapefruits, figs, a hint of caramel and some bitter hops.

Taste pretty damn good. Nice malt touch to it, bitter hop bite, very well balanced. You can taste fruits that lingre in its aroma. the shnazberrys taste like shnazberrys. Sweet figs and caramel. Alote of great flavors just lash out at you.

Not to heavy, you warm up to it after the first few sips. Overall a great and highly recommended beer.

I feel the need to start with a disclaimer: my beer bud and I opened this to celebrate a moment recently, a clearly compulsive act since the beer was not refrigerated and came out of the cellar at about 20 degrees celsius * groan *.

A brown head that dissipated too early with not a lot of carbonation gave way to a ruby colour. Given better lighting, there were lots of well-spaced miniscule bubbles that revealed a fullness of life. Cherry on the nose with malty baguette suggestions. This barley wine offering was loaded with hops and very full in the mouth, reminescent of a port or sherry, giving way to an over ripe mango in the finish. The combination of big alcohol and warm serving temperature threatened to knock me out with an intoxicating finish.

As I said in the disclaimer, there's a reason why the scoring here is not higher - where it deserves to be. Clearly another sampling - a proper one - is necessary to give this product the recognition it deserves. Now, I need to find one of these, or drive to the States at my first good opportunity...

A- clear copper, oddly similar to color of empty bottle little retent on a 1/4" white head, leaving little signs of its existence.

S- overload on malts, syrupy sweet, citrus tang, bready, caramel

T- heavy on malt sweetness, fruit(date, raisin), alcohol heat at finish, piney and grassy hop toward finish, citrus

M- medium body, surprisingly smooth, higher carbonation level than expected, coats palate

D- not the best barley wine but very enjoyable, recommended, its good

2006 release, 11.26% alc/vol.

Pours out a clear reddish orange color with about a half inch off-white head.

The smell kind of reminds me of 90 Minute IPA with its biscuity malty scent, with a little bit more citrusy fruit and a lot more alcohol.

The taste is more malty than I expected. Very biscuity with only a slight note of citrusy hops. The alcohol is very noticable while the beer is in your mouth, but finishes fairly smooth. This beer could use a little bit more bitterness IMHO. And age.

The mouthfeel is the best aspect of this beer. Its very heavy and full, and extremely creamy with just the right amount of cabonation.

Fairly drinkable for a beer of this magnitude. Perhaps a bit too young right now, and intense. This is going to be a lot better in a few years.

Poured from a 22 oz. bomber, Left a tan one finger head that recedes to surface skim, with not too much lacing. Body was an orange brown amber.

Smell - Competing rich bready malt, diacetyl, and esters. Dried dark fruits like dates, figs, raisins. Cinnamon sweet rolls, with dates and raisins. Some alcohol, but not as strong as abv would suggest. Hint of piney bitterness.

Taste - like the smell. Rich, thick bready malt. Lots of diacetyl. Esters. Caramel, dates, rasins, cinnamon sweet rolls, all washed with some alcohol astringency, but not nearly as high as abv would have it. Piney hop bitterness barely there, almost all but cancelled out by the heartiness of the malt. The hops on the other hand, mitigate the diacetyl to make the malt pleasantly caramelly sweet instead of overly overripe fruity sweet. Finishes with bready malt again, mild alcohol astringency. Aftertaste is hearty bread and longlasting with hint of lemony hops. Like I said before, high abv is very well hidden, and this is rich, hearty, and bold without being very alcoholic at all.

Mouthfeel - full, smooth, low carbonation. Somewhat chewy at times, slight alcohol astringency and burn with slight drying, but not really that much.

Drinkability - goes down well, and is deeply satisfying. But even though the alcohol is subdued in the taste, it is definitely present in its full potency nonetheless, that limits it to one bomber in any given session.

the 2006 vintage was the coup de grace on that fair evening of retardation and maturation. Unfortunately opened a bit too late for the finer sorts, nonetheless it shone through the pale on this fair eve with an angry recognizance all to its own. It would not be denied. The slight metallic oxygenation only enhanced its bravado. The beer nearly incited a riot, glaring at the willing conquistodores in its impending wake. Golden copper sexiness awaited everyman, everywoman, everychild! The beverage was phenomenal, aged to perfection. It was far superior to the 2008 version which was sampled. The five year old flavor far surpassed most of those that were touched by those human lips which dared to brave the February Day.
All of this to say that this vintage is drinking incredibly right now and it is highly recommended.

22 oz bomber poured into a tulip, this is gorgeous garnet-amber with a big two fingers of off-white dense head and great retention for a barleywine with this much alcohol, nice looking lace left behind on the glass. Nose is interesting, with a slight herbal hoppyiness over a doughy malt with a slight bit of fig and dark fruit. Taste is more of the same, a sweet slightly caramael malt with raisins and fig flavors blending nicely with spicey bitter hops and a slight alcoholic finish. Full bodied and very smooth, almost creamy. Very nicely balanced and smooth drinking, and for the ABV this is absolutely evilly drinkable. Great barleywine from Stone.

Shimmering copper with lively carbonation and a quickly fading ecru foam cap. Aromas of rum-soaked figs and hazelnuts doused in sherry -- an overall vinous nose. Sherry and port qualities abound in the taste; dark fruits (plum, cherry, fig) and a bit of roasted nut flavor. A small amount of bitter hoppiness is detectable in the finish, but the mammoth alcohol presence overtakes things from mid-sip onwards. This is still one hot barley wine. Slick mouthfeel; a bit chewy but smooth for the most part. For me, this is reminiscent of Double Bastard, but with a less aggressive overall flavor and a cranked up alcohol content. Seems as if this one definitely needs time for the alcohol heat to meld with the rest of the flavors. Stone has the most amazing bottle art.

Big ups to dmeadows for the trade!

2006 Vintage , cellared about one year , opened 1/12/7 - 22 oz. bottle- color of murky honey , with a thin off white head - nose of dried apricots , deep red fruit , soy sauce , iodine , bitter , chocolate , and malt – taste of resin , honey , slight hopps , red fruit , brown sugar , and slight alcohol- body harsh but clean , and low carbonation – aftertaste of salty , honey , gummy , and bitter

Pours a ruby red, clear with some floaties, some nice head, some lacing. Pretty enough. Smells like bready coffeed red wine. Similar to last year's batch, but definitely hoppier. Different. Taste is way hoppier too. Still some breadyness, some maltyness and some red wine- but hops take over. In full force. Mouthfeel is medium-bodied and sudsy, nice but not incredible. Fairly drinkable for an 11% beer- definitely sneaky- but drinkable nonetheless. A good brew, but not last year's batch... sigh.

Limited early 2006 release, 11.26% abv with a long story on the back in print that is way too small. WoW this beer knocked my socks off in every aspect. Poured a subtle golden amber color with pencil thin head and no lacing, random bubbles float to the surface - cool. Sitting next to me my wife suddenly said "your beer smells like wine" exactly, the aroma is a floral bouquet of super sweet malts complimented by citrus and sweet hops. Overpowering and aggressive the sweet scent invites you to sample the precious nectar that awaits. Flavor is extremely intense melding loads of malts, sweet and bitter with a dry hoppiness that shouldn't work but it does all too well. The alcohol walks through the door and shakes your hand but you are still thinking about the malts. The flavor lends itself to a smooth mouthfeel that finishes slightly bitter, the perfect ending to a wonderful story. Overall this is intense and beautiful, truly another fantastic effort created by Stone. Cudos

22 oz silkscreened bottle , dated Limited early 2006 release.
Pours a clear red , not much head.

Smells citrusy , sweet...grapefruit juice smell.

Taste starts bitter , with a floral bite. Alcohol presents itself , although not at all unpleasant. Some woodsy bourbon tones come through.

Mouthfeel is sharp , nicely carbonated.

I can imagine this beer increasing in drinkability after aging. I'll be buying the stock out , if any's left.

It looks like a liquid ruby. Very little head. Smell is like cognac with a burst of sweetness. Taste begins with banana but not similar to a hefe, this is very unique. That initial banana is followed by a syrupy berry taste mixed with caramel. Very very complex. The back is slightly bitter hops. The massive alcohol is well hidden but apparent enough to let you know you are indeed drinking a barley wine. I plan on drinking this many more times and buying some extras to age. I've heard that Stone advises us to drink this fresh but I can't help but think that some years under the belt would make this a more complete beer.

This is a 2004 bottle that Trancefishy brought over the other night.

This one poured a nice cloudy orange color with an off-white head.

The aroma was of raisins, figs, sweet malt, and mild alcohol.

There is a decent amount of residual sweetness in the flavor yet is has quite a bit of bitterness to it as well. There is a dark fruit presence like raisins, figs, dates, etc with a nice alcohol warming. There does seem to be something missing in finish.

The mouthfeel is full bodied with medium carbonation.

This is a pretty drinkable beer and I would like to try a few more of these during different stages to see how it is both young and old.

22oz. Bottle picked up from Table and Vine for 6.95.

From the first sips, it seems like it is worth every penny. This is one of those mystical beers that seems to rarely show up on the East Coast. Anyhow, as I was reading the label wafting cinnamon and warming fennels overcame me. Needless to say I stopped reading and started drinking. Mellow, mellow, mellow on the tongue. Not too spicy, not too numbing. Perfect.

At 11.20 this is obviously a bear- beware! This could quite possibly the easiest drinking high ABV beer I've ever had. Simply wonderful. This is one is definitely one for the cellar.
